Indiana Jones 5 Really Isn’t That Close
Earlier this week most of us gave a collective groan when Shia LaBeouf mentioned that Steven Spielberg had cracked the story for a fifth Indiana Jones film. So how far off is it, really? Empire’s headline today (”Indy 5 Is A Go!”) might lead you to think sooner rather than later, but that may not be the case. Producer Frank Marshall said things that Empire interpreted as meaning the film “could be approaching the pencil-chewing script development stage,” which means it isn’t anywhere close to happening.
“It’s really about the script,” Marshall said. “Once we see that, we’ll see. We’re not going to wait another 20 years. We’d all love to make another one. I’m anxious to hear the idea!” Translation: standard producer stuff. That line could mean anything. The one thing to take away from this is that, given the outrageous box office Indy 4 did worldwide, everyone involved won’t be as reluctant to give it another go. But how much of that $786m worldwide take was due to anticipation and interest built up over twenty years? After Crystal Skull, you can bet that audiences won’t be as quick to embrace another Indy movie just because Harrison Ford puts on a fedora.
And in case the situation still isn’t clear, Marshall weighs in again. “Until there’s a script, nothing’s definite. I haven’t heard the idea.” Last time settling on a script took years, as Spielberg, Lucas and Ford all have to approve the story and any draft. I’d like to think that after taking a long, hard look at the fourth film, Spielberg at least might be severely critical of any pages that cross his desk. Especially if they involve Indy Jr. in a serious capacity, which has to be part of the idea.

In June of 2009, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull co-star Shia LaBeouf told reporters that Steven Spielberg had "cracked" the story for Indiana Jones 5 and he thinks "they're gearing that up." But as far as I can tell, no screenwriter has been hired to turn that idea into a script.
Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford reiterated the first part of Shia's previous statement in March, stating that "Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] and I are sort of agreed on a germ of an idea and we're seeing what comes of it." Ford went on to explain the process: "The process works like this… We come to some basic agreement and then George goes away for a long time and works on it. Then Steven and I get it in some form, some embryonic form. Then if we like it we start working with George on it and at some point down the line it's ready and we do it." We now might have more information about the possible sequel.
TheFilmStage has found a posting on a site called Music Rooms which claims to have more information about the sequel. Before we get to that, let me warn you that this information is unsubstantiated, and should be considered nothing more than pure rumor. But that isn't going to stop us from speculating and talking about the possibilities.
According the the story, Indiana Jones 5 is gearing up to start shooting next year, and Harrison Ford is on "stand-by" with Shia LaBeouf set to return in a "central role" as Mutt Williams, the son of Indy. According to the report, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas are almost done with the script, which involves a plot centered around the Bermuda Triangle. The source claims that it will be "an emotional and exciting conclusion to the franchise, with Indy facing his biggest challenge yet," and that it "will be a 'blockbuster made in the old fashioned way rather than the CGI efforts of the last movie."
Who knows if any of this is true, sounds rather gossipy to me. We learned about the story yesterday and we debating on if it was worth posting, if anything, for discussion. My good friend and neighbor Dan Trachtenberg suggested that the lost city of Atlantis could be at the center of the Bermuda Triangle, which is an interested idea.
Indy fans will remember that LucasArts released a CD-Rom graphical adventure game in 1992 titled Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and Atlantis was long rumored to be the posisble focus of a fourth film, either that or Aliens and crystal skulls — and we all know how that turned out. It also has been rumored that the in development National Treasure 3 will lead to Atlantis.

It's on!
Steven Spielberg will direct Harrison Ford in the untitled fifth installment in the action-adventure franchise, which will open July 19, 2019, Disney announced Tuesday.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Disney chairman Alan Horn. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
