Plot Summary: "The Green Hornet" made his debut on January 31, 1936 on WXYZ Detroit, the creation of the station's George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, who also created the Lone Ranger. The series, which ran until 1952 on the Mutual and NBC Blue networks, followed the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy whose life is changed when he inherits his father's crusading newspaper, The Daily Sentinel. He saves the life of Kato, a Japanese man with incredible technical and martial-arts skills, who becomes Britt's closest ally -- and transforms Britt's car into the supercharged Black Beauty, which gives them an edge as they search for evidence to expose the city's underworld in the newspaper. When Britt and Kato witness a brutal mob hit, Britt invents his secret identity -- taking his name from his powerful car's defective horn. A skilled fighter and expert marksman, the Green Hornet uses two special, non-lethal guns to subdue criminals: one fires a potent knock-out gas while the other produces the "Hornet's Sting" -- an electric shock.

June 23, 2008

We're almost exactly two years away from the release of Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet on June 25, 2010, but the Sony-owned studio has already released the logo for the comic book adaptation that will star Seth Rogen in the title role. The action adventure, co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg, will bring to life the story of the masked fictional crime fighter and his similarly masked Asian manservant Kato.

Chow to Direct and Star in Green Hornet! - Superhero Hype!
Source:Columbia Pictures September 19, 2008

Stephen Chow, one of Asia's most popular box-office draws as the award-winning star and director of such films as Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and Shaolin Soccer, will direct Seth Rogen and star opposite him as Kato in Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet, set for release June 25, 2010, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach, presidents of Columbia Pictures. The screenplay is by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, who will also executive produce. Neal H. Moritz is the producer through his Original Film production company.

In tapping Chow to helm The Green Hornet, Sony Pictures Entertainment continues a long association with the star and director. Under its local language initiative, Sony co-produced and released Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, which went on to gross over $100 million worldwide and received a Golden Globe® nomination as well as six Hong Kong Film Awards and five Taiwan Golden Horse Awards. Sony also released CJ7.

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, "When Seth, Evan, and Neal said they wanted Stephen Chow to be part of 'The Green Hornet,' it was a fantasy. Now that it's happening, it's almost too good to be true. Stephen's been a very important part of the Sony family for many years, so it's truly serendipitous for us to be moving forward with him directing the movie and starring as Kato."

Chow added, "I'm excited to be taking on 'The Green Hornet' -- obviously, I've been a huge fan of the show since I was a kid. The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true. I'm grateful to my friends at Sony, who have shown so much faith in me for so many years. I'm looking forward to working with Seth, Evan, Neal, and the team at Sony, and I'm eager to get started."

Moritz said, "'The Green Hornet' is a dream project and it's come together in a dream way. Seth will be fantastic in the lead role, and Stephen was the only name on the list for Kato. The material is a perfect match for his sensibilities -- Stephen in the director's chair is the best thing for the film."

Rogen said, "Stephen was always my and Evan's first choice for director and to play Kato. We just hope that he never finds out we're not the Wachowski Brothers."

Ori Marmur will serve as the Executive Producer of the film.

Chow previously told us of his interest in the project. "When I saw the program, I thought it was a great role and thought it was outstanding, because I'm Chinese and it's Bruce Lee, but I'd be happy to play that role," he said.

Later, we asked Seth Rogen about approaching Chow, who answered, "It's a very intense action movie and the relationship between Green Hornet and Kato, a lot of comedy comes from that. At first actually, we weren't even sure going in we could be more of a Jet Li type guy who maybe isn't the funniest guy in the world, but he's physically very impressive, or whether it would be more of a Stephen Chow type guy who can do martial arts, but clearly has a sense of humor. In the version that we've made it seems like a Stephen Chow type guy would be more suitable for the role. Again, until they officially greenlight it, it's hard to make any of those decisions."

Tycker du kanske att Seth Green hade passat bättre? :P

Empire: Movie News - Stephen Chow Won't Direct Green Hornet
He'll still play Kato in the action-com
Source: Variety

Well, our enthusiasm levels for Seth Rogen’s The Green Hornet just dropped about 27%, with the news that Stephen Chow – the mad genius behind Shaolin Soccer and Kung-Fu Hustle – has dropped out of the director’s chair.

No reason has been given for Chow’s departure – but since he’s still attached to play Kato, the high-kicking sidekick to Rogen’s masked millionaire, Britt Reid, the split can’t have been too acrimonious.

Now, with a Spring start for filming and a 2010 release date looming large, Sony and producer Neal Moritz are now scrambling to find a director who can bring Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s script to life. It’ll be a surprise if they can find anyone whose action/comedy sensibilities match those of Chow’s, but we’ll wait and see.

And just to clarify, we’re still excited to see this – who doesn’t want to see Seth Rogen as a crimefighting superhero? – but Chow’s involvement as director had placed this right near the top of our must-see list. Now, it’s somewhere in the middle.

http://www.superhero...ews.php?id=7933

Late last week, it was announced that Stephen Chow had dropped out as director of Columbia Pictures' The Green Hornet but that he would still play Kato in the comic book adaptation.

Now, however, that is still up in the air as well as Chow tells The Associated Press that he may not have time to star as Kato, the character made famous by Bruce Lee.

Chow, whose credits include Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, said over the weekend that he wants to free up time to work with Jack Black on a comedy about a superhero.

"If I direct 'The Green Hornet,' the superhero comedy will have to be delayed for two years," Chow said. "The timing might not be right for a superhero comedy in two years. And I want to make a movie based on an original idea."

Chow said whether he stays on to play Kato in The Green Hornet depends on his schedule.

Has Rogen's 'Green Hornet' Been Defeated?

... I spoke this afternoon with a source close to the film, and while they didn't call it completely dead, they did say it is "highly unlikely" that the film will shoot in 2009 at all.

Filmen verkar fortfarande vara på gång.

A few days ago there was a rumor about The Green Hornet being canned by Sony. According to a recent update from the film's writer and star, Seth Rogen, that rumor just isn't true. Rogen contacted HitFix (the guys who reported the original story) and assured them that Sony still has every intention of making it.

Apparently Stephen Chow's decision to leave as director might have caused a few people to lose their confidence and start questioning whether it would still get made, which is why a few of them thought it was being canned. But if Rogen has anything to do with it, and he does, it'll still happen as planned.

"[The studio heads] have every intention on making it, and assuming we're able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibility, it should still hit the release date," Rogen told HitFix.

Not only is he starring in the film and co-writing it, but he's also producing, which means he has more than just a strong say in what happens.

Riktigt intressanta nyheter idag.

Helt sant. :)

Seth Rogen förklarar lite mer.

Rogen, who spoke with MTV recently about the news, enthusiastically explained why he is actually the perfect choice and even goes so far as to explain how they got him to begin with.

After sending him the script, Gondry loved it so much that he shot a fight scene to try and prove to Sony that he could do it and make it look good.

Rogen promises that this

"will be a great combination of both of our styles. It should have the type of conversational tone and comedy that me and Evan have been doing — and some of the action that we have been starting to try to do — along with the wild, visual imagination and funny awkward sensibility that [Gondry's] been doing."

If that's not enough to convince you that Gondry might be the perfect guy, then check out this story.

Rogen explains that he got the script into Gondry's hands both for input and to convince the studio to meet with him. "They were skeptical of. I wouldn't say his ability to make a giant budget studio movie, but his willingness to make a giant budget studio movie. But he loved the script, he totally got it, which a lot of [potential directors] just didn't." From there, he overboard to prove he was the right director:

Gondry loved the Green Hornet script so much, in fact, that he began filming it immediately.

"To convince the studio to let him do it, he filmed a fight scene on his own," Rogen marveled. "He just hired stunt men and did it by himself! Just to show some of the stuff he could do, some of the weird filming techniques he has and some of the stuff he can pull off. I mean, this is something he did in two days and it was instantly unlike anything you've ever seen before. It was impossible not to hire him once he presented what he could do for it."

"Me and [co-writer] Evan [Goldberg] have always been gigantic fans of [Gondry]," Rogen says. "We just like anyone who thinks outside the box, and there's really nobody who thinks more outside the box then he does; he's really a magician in a lot of ways."

And as for our concern about cardboard, I don't think we have to worry about that at all.

"My direct quote to [Gondry] right before he met with the studio was, 'You have to convince them they're not gonna show up on set one day and everything is gonna be made out of cardboard.' And he said, 'I can definitely do that.'"

Splash Page » Fan-Made ‘Green Hornet’ Flick Gives Seth Rogen & Michel Gondry A Run For Their Money

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest online scuttlebutt regarding Seth Rogen’s adaptation of “The Green Hornet,” then you’re probably well aware that the rumor mill has not been too kind to the project lately. Likewise, Rogen’s most recent, head-scratching comments didn’t do the flick any favors, either.

As if that wasn’t enough, amateur French filmmaker Aurenlien Poitrimoult has upped the ante in terms of gritty action and breakneck fight sequences in a “Green Hornet” short film that’s been around a while now, but just caught our attention here at Splash Page HQ.

We’re not saying Rogen and “Green Hornet” director Michel Gondry are slouches by any stretch, but if their take on the character has half the action that Poitrimoult packs in his five-minute short, then consider us sold.

“The choice of the characters and the subject was very simple,” explained the filmmaker in a 2006 interview with SuperHeroHype. “For a long time, Manu Lanzi (who plays The Green Hornet) and [I] had wanted to work together on a project. One thing we had in common was our passion for comic books, and Manu’s background as a stuntman and martial arts actor [pushed] us towards a more action orientated choice.

Aurenlien Poitrimoult’s “Green Hornet” film

“We decided upon ‘The Green Hornet,’ a character we both knew very well and that we agreed could satisfy own wishes,” continued Poitrimoult. “Manu for the action which is such an integral part of ‘The Green Hornet,’ and myself for the twist and turns on the comic book world and the urban ‘who dunit?’ feel.”

Kato Casting Call Kicks Chow To The Curb? | /Film

It would appear from a freshly surfaced casting call that the role of Kato in Michel Gondry's Green Hornet movie is currently vacant. After it was announced that Seth Rogen was to write, produce and star in a Hornet flick a heady cocktail of skepticism and intrigue flooded the web. Then, it was announced that Stephen Chow was going to both direct and co-star in the picture and the general level of enthusiasm went through the roof. After that, a nosedive as Chow left the director's seat and while it seemed likely he'd also pass up on the acting position, nothing was made official and Rogen even intimated that Chow was just as likely to be his Kato as ever. This remained the case even after Gondry was announced as director.

That all changes now, however.

Here's a short casting call for the part, as scooped by Spoiler TV:

[KATO] ALL ASIAN ETHNICITIES, Male, 20's - early 40's. Brit Reid's manservant/chauffeur by day and Green Hornet's martial arts-skilled sidekick by night. Actor doesn't have to have Martial Arts experience.

We could chew that over all night, from the indifference to actual specific ethnicity through the vague age range requested to the lack of necessity for pre-formed Martial Arts skills. Be my guest.

I trust Gondry implicitly, and I think Rogen is a very dependable individual to have so closely attached to a project like this but, if the truth be told, I'm not reading much joy in the tea leaves for this one. Nothing seems to be going to plan. I'm hoping that some good, strong announcements come out of the Hornet camp soon and swing the focus back onto the great stuff this film has going for it.

I bet the casting of Tony Jaa would put a smile on plenty of faces… but should it? Perhaps Rogen and Gondry have more in store for Kato than acrobatics and balletic smackdowns. The kind of more Chow can do in his sleep.

IGN: Chou Cast as Kato

Taiwanese pop star to play Green Hornet's partner.
by IGN Staff <a href="http://clk.atdmt.com...,bfiafuzjboplu" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://view.atdmt.co...,bfiafuzjboplu" /></a> August 8, 2009 - Taiwanese pop star-actor Jay Chou has been cast as Kato in Columbia Pictures' big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet. Kato was famously portrayed on the small screen by the late Bruce Lee.

Seth Rogen plays the title role in The Green Hornet, opposite Cameron Diaz as the female lead and Nicolas Cage as the villain. Rogen also penned the script with Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express), based upon The Green Hornet radio series created by George W. Trendle

Chou said in a statement, "It's an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won't try to be Bruce Lee's Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it's a dream role, and I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Green Hornet director Michel Gondry added, "Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry, and I knew the movie will be great."

THE GREEN HORNET Release Date Now January 14, 2011; Will be in 3D - Collider.com

Sony Pictures has informed us that Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet has been pushed back from December 22nd to January 14, 2011 so the film can have more time to work on the 3D. Steve spoke to producer Neal Moritz earlier this month and Moritz revealed that they were doing tests to see if Green Hornet was worth a 3D conversion. We now know that for Moritz, Hornet passed the test. It’s good to know that they’re planning this 3D conversion well in advance of the film’s release, unlike the rushed, ugly conversion Warner Bros. did on Clash of the Titans.

The new release date also moves the film, which stars Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, and Christoph Waltz, away from the heavy holiday season. The competition for 3D screens will be fierce with Tron Legacy, Yogi Bear, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 all vying for 3D theaters. Additionally, Fox may (and I predict they will) give conversions to their holiday-season flicks, Gulliver’s Travels and The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Not much point in turning your film 3D when there aren’t enough 3D screens to make it worth the trouble. I’m going to assume that more theaters will be going 3D capable to accommodate the oncoming onslaught.
