Changes Abound for the Big Four

As the upfront presentations begin this week in New York, word is already filtering out about the Fall 2004 schedules and what shows won't be coming back.
ABC

While nothing official has been announced, ABC is expected to order the sitcoms SAVAGES, the untitled Jason Alexander show, and THAT'S JUST RODNEY for Fall 2004.

Pushed back to midseason consideration are Jennifer Love Hewitt's untitled sitcom, I MARRIED SOFIA, and FULL CIRCLE. Jessica Simpson's sitcom has been trashed, but she is in talks with the network to produce up to eight Simpson-centered specials over two years.

The sitcoms MY WIFE & KIDS, GEORGE LOPEZ, ACCORDING TO JIM,  LESS THAN PERFECT, 8 SIMPLE RULES and HOPE & FAITH will return.

ABC will order the dramas FLEET STREET (spinoff of THE PRACTICE), LOST, GRAY'S ANATOMY, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and LIFE AS WE KNOW IT (formerly known as DOING IT) for the fall schedule. The net will likely also order BLIND JUSTICE and EYES, but it's uncertain where they'll land: fall or midseason.

On the reality front, THE BACHELOR/BACHELORETTE, EXTREME MAKEOVER (including the HOME EDITION), and AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS will all be returning. ABC has also picked up the reality show WIFE SWAP, which will likely air in the fall.

ABC has officially canceled LIFE WITH BONNIE, I'M WITH HER, MARRIED TO THE KELLYS and IT'S ALL RELATIVE.

NBC

At the last minute over the weekend, NBC ordered eight episodes plus five scripts of MEDIUM. Patricia Arquette will star as a soccer mom that uses her psychic powers to solve crimes. Jake Weber (MIND OF THE MARRIED MAN) will play her husband and Miguel Sandoval will play her boss, a district attorney.

For Fall 2004, the Peacock has also picked up the sitcoms JOEY, THE OFFICE, MEN'S ROOM and CRAZY FOR YOU. JOEY will takeover FRIENDS' slot on Thursdays at 8 PM ET, followed by WILL & GRACE, THE APPRENTICE and ER. Over the weekend, NBC also ordered two more seasons of SCRUBS, which will take them through Fall 2006.

SCRUBS will likely be paired with CRAZY FOR YOU on Tuesdays, beginning either at 8 or 9 PM ET. The time slot will depend on which reality show NBC decides to pair with those two shows.

MY 11:30 and NEVERMIND NIRVANA have been pushed back to midseason consideration.

NBC also ordered the dramas HAWAII, LAX (renamed from HUB) and MEDICAL INVESTIGATIONS (renamed from THE CURE). LAS VEGAS will be the only new drama carried over from this season. FEAR FACTOR will lead Mondays, followed by LAS VEGAS at 9 PM ET and HAWAII at 10 PM ET.  LAX is a contender for Wednesdays, likely preceding THE WEST WING. However, NBC may opt to slot comedies at 8 PM ET. Depending on how the schedule is ultimately arranged, any of the three new dramas may be pushed back to midseason.

Dennis Farina has officially signed on to replace Jerry Orbach in LAW & ORDER. According to creator Dick Wolfe, Farina will play an "Italian cop who's an iconoclast... and a confirmed bachelor."

Reality shows THE CONTENDER and THE HIGH LIFE have also been added to the schedule.

NBC has officially canceled ED, COUPLING, BOOMTOWN, GOOD MORNING MIAMI, HAPPY FAMILY, THE LYON'S DEN, MISS MATCH, THE TRACY MORGAN SHOW and WHOOPI.

CBS

The Eye is expected to order new dramas CLUBHOSUE, DR. VEGAS, THE WEBSTER REPORT, the untitled Tony Kornheiser project and CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE.

Sitcom EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND will return with  TWO AND A HALF MEN for its final season, as CBS, producer and star Ray Romano and execuitve producer Phil Rosenthal finalized a deal to bring back the show for a shortened 16-episode season.

"Emotionally, we never want the show to end, but everything must," Rosenthal said. "We look forward to these remaining episodes as a few encores and a few more meals with our staff."

CBS will likely officially cancel THE GUARDIAN, YES, DEAR, THE DISTRICT and HACK.

FOX

Little is known about Fox's schedule at this point, but the network has told the staff of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and TRU CALLING that they may hire additional writers for both series, which is a good sign that they'll return for second seasons.

The WB

As announced before, The WB has picked up two dramas for Fall 2004: JACK & BOBBY and THE MOUNTAIN.

The Frog's Monday and Tuesday night schedules will remain the same, but on Wedesnday, SMALLVILLE will be followed by two new reality shows: BLUE COLLAR TV and THE GREEN SCREEN.

THE MOUNTAIN will lead Thursday nights at 8 PM ET, followed by new reality show STUDIO 7. The unscripted show will focus on a group of twentysomethings that live together for a week and then move to a studio where they compete for a $100,000 prize.

The Frog has picked up one sitcom in Mark Burnett's COMMANDO NANNY, which will inhabit Fridays. On Fridays, REBA will be moved back to 9 PM ET, followed by GROUNDED FOR LIFE. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU will move to 8 PM ET and begin to focus more on Amanda Bynes. COMMANDO NANNY will take the 8:30 PM ET slot.

Fran Drescher's SHACKING UP was thought to have been a strong contender for the Fall season, but it has been pushed back to midseason. This year's summer entry, SUMMERLAND, will come back for midseason if it performs in its initial run.

Sunday afternoon's EZ View segment will return with repeats of ONE TREE HILL at 5 PM ET and THE MOUNTAIN at 6.

The WB has also scrapped their Sunday BEGINNINGS slot and opted to fill it with STEVE HARVEY'S BIG TIME at 7 PM ET. BIG TIME will be expanded to include a wider variety of guests than the usual freak shows.

CHARMED will retain its Sunday 8 PM ET slot and follow it with JACK AND BOBBY at 9 PM.

The WB has officially canceled ALL ABOUT THE ANDERSONS, THE HELP, THE JAMIE KENNEDY EXPERIMENT, LIKE FAMILY and RUN OF THE HOUSE.
