"Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are reteaming to produce a remake of the cult hit The Evil Dead through Ghost House Pictures and Senator International, reports Variety.
Raimi wrote, directed and produced the 1981 film, which tells the tale of a group of friends who go to a cabin in the woods, where they find an unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. One by one, the teens become deadly zombies. With only Ash (Campbell) remaining, it is up to him to survive the night and battle The Evil Dead.
Raimi will not direct the remake, so Ghost House is looking for a helmer to reinvent the franchise before a script is written.
The original film spawned sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.

Raimi and Campbell to remake horror classic
18 November 2004
Stop a hundred horror junkies in the street and ask them for the best horror film of all time and you can be sure at least half will pipe up with one of Sam Raimi's glorious Evil Dead films. While we at the Empire office may wrangle (and occasionally strangle) over which of the three is the better film, there's no denying that this gory triumvirate proved definitively that a ) Raimi is a god among men b ) Bruce Campbell is the most underrated actor alive and c ) plasticine is a LOT scarier than we were led to believe as children.
Bearing all this in mind, you will perhaps be both overjoyed and mortified to learn that the iconic Evil Dead has been added to the remake roster. Before you panic, it's worth mentioning that Raimi, Campbell and original producing partner Rob Tapert will be overseeing the project so it's certainly in safe hands. The downside though, is that Raimi won't be directing.
On the one hand, updating a classic with modern technology seems like a good idea but, with Evil Dead, the low tech approach was one of its charms. You wouldn't go into the Louvre and start redoing Monet's work as Magic Eye drawings now would you? No you wouldn't, because the French would have your eyes. The same holds true here. Oh we're fascinated to see what they come up with but, even with Raimi at the wheel, this would be a risky proposition and without him? Well, things do not bode well.
Its unclear whether Campbell will return to play Ashly 'Ash' Williams, but the thought of anyone else taking up the boomstick is almost too terrible to contemplate.

Nicholas Brendon - To Work On Evil Dead Remake ?
From Ign.com - By Brian Linder - 2004-11-23rd
Dude, Where’s My Dead?
Evil Dead redo casting rumor.
November 22, 2004 - Let’s be clear: This is all completely unsubstantiated, so Evil Dead devotees shouldn’t freak out... The dTheatre website is reporting that Sean William Scott (Dude, Where’s My Car?, The Rundown) is in the running to play Ash, the role made famous by cult movie fav Bruce Campbell, in the recently announced remake of Evil Dead.
In addition to the Dude, Where’s My Car? star, a couple of other names have begun spinning around the rumor mill... IESB reports that Nicholas Brendon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Xander, may play Ash. And Dark Horizons tosses out Justin Theroux (Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, Mulholland Drive) as another possibility.
The film is being shopped to directors and a script is currently in development. Original helmer Sam Raimi will not be directing the remake, he’ll be producing along with Campbell. The first film launched the careers of Raimi & Tapert as producers and directors while also launching the acting career of its star, Bruce Campbell. Campbell has starred in two sequels, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn and Army of Darkness.

Rob Tapert on The Evil Dead Remake
Source: Sci Fi Wire January 26, 2005
Rob Tapert, who runs Ghost House Pictures with "Spider-Man" franchise director Sam Raimi, talked to Sci Fi Wire about producing the upcoming remake of The Evil Dead, which original star Bruce Campbell will also produce.
Tapert said they're going to be careful. "I talk to Bruce Campbell every other day, and he says, 'You should see the message boards and all of the stuff I get saying "Please don't do it!"' So we're certainly going to have to tread carefully."
He added that "as long as we stay true to what was the original model of the first Evil Dead, which was that we want to hurt and punish the audience, then those who love it will be satisfied."
"We mean to bring that out to a whole new generation in something that honors all of the people that loved it and yet gives them a new and thrilling ride that they weren't expecting. That's the challenge, and hopefully if we succeed that's kind of the glory."
