“We had to pull back to our September start date due to budget delays and ongoing story development and logistical issues, but Dark Tower is moving forward,” Howard said. “We’re thinking of starting in early spring now. I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.” The project would start with a feature film, followed by six hours of TV content, starring the same actors as in the movie. “There are elements of the Dark Tower saga that are more personal and can be best dealt with on television,” Howard continued. “TV allows you to roll out details of the characters in a more methodical way.”

Universal Nixes Stephen King's 'Dark Tower' - No Ambitious Film Trilogy Or TV Series

The moment has come for Universal Pictures to fish or cut bait on The Dark Tower, the ultra-ambitious adaptation of the Stephen King 7-novel series that was going to encompass a trilogy of feature films and two limited run TV series. The studio has said, No Thanks. Universal has passed on going forward with the project.

Why did Universal chairman Adam Fogelson and co-chairman Donna Langley decide not to go forward? They weren't saying, at this point. Nor were the filmmakers. Universal has put big chips on the table for several tent pole films and maybe that has something to do with it. The big bets include the Peter Berg-directed Battleship with Taylor Kitsch starring, as well as the Keanu Reeves-starrer 47 Ronin with Carl Rinsch directing. If you listen to word on the street, both of these are $200 million realm with huge marketing budgets. Universal recently passed on green lighting At The Mountains of Madness, which Guillermo del Toro was to direct with Tom Cruise starring, based on HP Lovecraft horror tale. That time, the studio balked at funding a $150 million film that gave del Toro the latitude to deliver his cut with an R-rating.

Insiders said that Universal brass loved the filmmakers and the project, but couldn't make it work with the current budget in its business model.

“I’m sorry Universal passed, but not really surprised. As a rule, they’ve been about smaller and less risky pix; maybe they feel it would be better to stick with those fast and furious racing boys. I bear them no ill will, and trust Ron Howard to get Roland and his friends before the camera somewhere else. He’s very committed to the project.”

Lone Ranger-style budget cuts could save that big-screen Dark Tower | Blastr

It's been three months since Universal dropped its support of Ron Howard's massive film and TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, and the project is still showing signs of life. Script rewrites have removed a hefty chunk of the budget, and producer Brian Grazer is confident that because of those changes, "It's gonna get made."
The project was never completely dead in the first place, as we heard <a href="http://blastr.com/20...-h.php">reports back in August that both Grazer and Howard were still at work seeking outside financing. Howard is now working on his new flick Rush, due out in 2013, but according to Grazer they have already revisited the script and managed to make it a good deal cheaper.

"We found a way to cut out $45 million out of the budget without changing the scope and actually giving it a good ending," Grazer said, suggesting a heavily re-worked approach. "In the $140 million draft, the ending wasn't quite as satisfying. Now, we've got $45 million, $50 million out of the way and a really satisfying ending. It's gonna get made."

It's a pretty vague statement, and it doesn't even indicate whether Grazer is talking about the first film or the whole project. Based on the numbers, it seems like the first film is all he could be referring to, but since we're not sure exactly where one part of this project will end and another will begin, we also don't know what that newly satisfying ending could be either.
Grazer, Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman already tried going the route of cutting the budget through rewrites before Universal dropped the project, but this seems like a much more drastic effort, so maybe it'll work. We heard just two weeks ago that Johnny Depp's The Lone Ranger was saved at Disney by budget cuts, so it could work again for this. The Dark Tower, though, is a project on a much grander scale, so even if it does work for the first film, how does this affect the project overall?
(via Comic Book Movie)

Ron Howard's endangered Dark Tower series has found its TV home | Blastr

Yesterday we heard that Ron Howard's massive adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower could be saved by budget cuts, at least on the film side. Now the TV side looks to be shaping up, too. According to producer Brian Grazer, the project now has a network home at HBO.
In an interview promoting Tower Heist, Grazer said that while the movie side of the project is still waiting for studio backing after losing Universal Pictures earlier this year, the TV end of things is set.

"We're going to do [The Dark Tower] with HBO," Grazer told us. "We'll do the TV with HBO, and we'll do the movie with... to be determined. We'll do it right."

[indent=2]Grazer also reaffirmed that knocking $45 million off the budget of (we think) the first film will help to push that side of the project in the right direction.[indent=1]"We're going to do that movie. We've lost $45 million out of the budget," he said. "When people say no to you enough, then you have to lose money, which we've done without harming the scope of the film."

Javier Bardem is (as far as we know) still on board to play the hero, Roland Deschain, but no dates have been thrown around for production or release of either side of this hefty endeavor just yet. Still, with HBO on board, the project definitely has a new sense of stability. How soon before a studio gets on board?

The story continues....

After getting rejected by two studios on an ambitious multi-platform treatment of Stephen King’s seminal novel series The Dark Tower. Grazer, Howard, Akiva Goldsman and King streamlined their original ambition to adapt nine volumes into three features and two limited-run TV series.

Now, Media Rights Capital is committed to make a single movie with Russell Crowe as the gunslinger Roland Deschain, with more movies coming if the first gets results. This isn’t set in stone, as Grazer tells me that he has just been approached by a Silicon Valley investor willing to finance Dark Tower as originally constructed, Now it’s a matter of deciding what path to take.

Sant.

"The Dark Tower is something that we’re still working on. We’ve all taken a vow of silence about the progress, the headway, what we think our timetable is, because I don’t think I realised how much media interest there was in the title and how much excitement there was.

And yet it’s a fascinating, powerful possibility and even Stephen King acknowledges it’s a tricky adaptation, but to be honest, from a financing side, it’s not a straightforward, four-quadrant, sunny Superhero story – it’s dark, it’s horror.

That edge is what appeals to me, the complexities of those characters is what appeals to all of us. And I think Stephen King really respects that, with [regular screenwriting collaborator] Akiva Goldsman and myself, that that’s what we love about it, and that’s what we want to try to get to the screen.

So my answer is: it got delayed, it’s never gone away. We’re working on it, and Stephen is very patient with us, and Akiva’s just gone off and directed a movie, I’m continuing to work, but the Dark Tower dreams – fever dreams, rather – are still there, but we’re not going to give it a timetable."

Sökte, men hittade inget.

The Shawshank Redemption, Game of Thrones, The Expanse (vad jag förstår, har inte läst böckerna ännu).

The Dark is Rising, Alla fem-filmer (Enid Blyton), I Am Legend, World War Z.

"Under the Doom" och "Haven".
