Xena doesn't just have a warcry. She made war cry. Just ask Ares

For Xena, death is never permanent. Its just a slight set back and always part of her plan.

Review:

It use to take a comic hero of Superman caliber to warrant a feature film, but now it seems everything found in your local comic book store has a chance to hit the big screen. HELLBOY is a perfect example of that. It seems that the biggest films nowadays are based on a comic book, and HELLBOY is looking to keep that trend alive. The question is, can a comic hero as obscure as HELLBOY generate the buzz it needs to be successful?

HELLBOY begins during WWII, in a time when the Nazi army is looking to increase their might. Professor Bruttenholm and segment of the US military is descending on the place where Hitler's army is about to open a gateway to hell. A chant, led by the deceased Russian advisor Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden) opens the gateway. The US forces converge on the gate, destroying its source and eliminating Rasputin. However, before this can be accomplished, something from the other side makes its way through the gates. Professor Bruttenholm bonds with the creature, who will go on to be known as Hellboy (Ron Perlman).

HELLBOY is a film that will disappoint some, but entertain most. The problem with this film doesn't really lie with the film itself, but with the marketing of the film. It's marketed as a somewhat serious, action packed adventure film. While it does feature plenty of action, it's not nearly as serious as depicted in the trailers. It mixes good action with offbeat humor, much like the now cancelled ANGEL series on the WB.

The action sequences throughout this film are good. Occasionally you'll see a take that could use some polish, but generally speaking the effects are well done. Anything that might catch your eye is quickly covered up by something impressive. The make up is excellent as well. While Hellboy himself may look a bit fake at times, overall the film is quite successful at presenting a convincing version of the character.

The acting is mixed, but for the most part works. Ron Perlman is excellent as the wise cracking demon Hellboy. His delivery mixed with a solid script really sells this character. Selma Blair is decent as the girl with a really hot temper Liz Sherman. Her performance doesn't detract from the film; however it also lacks any real life in its execution.

Overall, HELLBOY is a good action film for the people who don't take the genre too seriously. It's full of jokes, but some really good action. From what I've heard, fans of the HELLBOY comic won't be disappointed here.

MPAA: Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action violence and frightening images.
