The following loose transcript of the orientation film was obtained from this page.
Quote:Note: A "*" denotes a crackle or other un-interpretable audio. Anything followed by a "(?)" denotes my interpretation of the audio if the audio was not obvious.

Orientation

Dharma Logo screen:
Dharma Logo with Swan(?) image in center
Below Logo reads:
Orientation - Station 3 - The Swan
Welcome. I am Dr. Marvin Candle(?) and this is your orientation film for station 3 of the *Dharma(?)* Initiative.
In a moment you will be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with the station. But first, a little history:
The Dharma Initiative was created in 1970, and is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGrout(?); 2 doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner, imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free-thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social...*...clusive Danish industrialist and munitions magnate, Alvar Hanso, whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose, social-science research facility a reality.
You and your partner are currently located in station 3, or The Swan, and will be for the next 540 days. Now station 3 was originally constructed as a laboratory, where scientists could work to understand the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of the island. Not long after the experiments began, however, there was....an 'incident'....and since that time, the following protocol has been observed:
That every 108 minutes, the button must be pushed. From the moment the alarm sounds, you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the microcomputer processor(?)...*...duction into the program. When the alarm sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly recommended that you and your partner take alternating shifts. In this manner you will both stay as fresh and alert...*...most importance; that when the alarm sounds, the code be entered correctly and in a timely fashion.
Now DO NOT attempt to use the computer...*...for anythi...
Congratulations! Until your replacements arrive, the future of the project is in your hands.
On behalf of the DeGrouts(?), Alvar Hanso, and all of us at the Dharma Initiative, thank you, namaste, and....good luck.
End Title Screen:
Note: 'namaste' is a greeting that I learned at yoga. Looking up its meaning just now, I found:
Quote:An Indian greeting simply translated "I bow to the divine in you"; from the root words: Namas - bow, reverential salutation (from "Nam" -humbly submitting) Te - to you, acknowledging the divine presence in another. Traditionally said while bringing the palms together at the heart in prayer position and lightly bowing the head and shoulders.
www.natureyoga.com/terminology.htm
A quick note: There were polar bears on that part of the film where they reference zoology.
The "incident" that led to the new protocol and therefore the new orientation film might have damaged the old computer terminal, which they could have replaced with the Apple II+ look-alike at that time.
Information on the real B. F. Skinner, who is supposed to be the inspiration behind this initiative.
Quote:August 18, 1990, B. F. Skinner died of leukemia after becoming perhaps the most celebrated psychologist since Sigmund Freud.
Quote:B. F. Skinner’s entire system is based on operant conditioning. The organism is in the process of “operating” on the environment, which in ordinary terms means it is bouncing around it world, doing what it does. During this “operating,” the organism encounters a special kind of stimulus, called a reinforcing stimulus, or simply a reinforcer. This special stimulus has the effect of increasing the operant -- that is, the behavior occurring just before the reinforcer. This is operant conditioning: “the behavior is followed by a consequence, and the nature of the consequence modifies the organisms tendency to repeat the behavior in the future.”
Imagine a rat in a cage. This is a special cage (called, in fact, a “Skinner box”) that has a bar or pedal on one wall that, when pressed, causes a little mechanism to release a foot pellet into the cage. The rat is bouncing around the cage, doing whatever it is rats do, when he accidentally presses the bar and -- hey, presto! -- a food pellet falls into the cage! The operant is the behavior just prior to the reinforcer, which is the food pellet, of course. In no time at all, the rat is furiously peddling away at the bar, hoarding his pile of pellets in the corner of the cage.
A behavior followed by a reinforcing stimulus results in an increased probability of that behavior occurring in the future.
This definitely lends to the theory of the whole thing being a psychology experiment.
There are 6 stations (3 of 6), and I think we are supposed to believe they are all on the same island. The film states that they are studying 6 things, "...meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social..." with Station 3 studying electromagnetism.
This would explain why the symbol on the shark's fin has something other than the swan in the middle of the BaGua. Presumably, the shark would be connected with a different Dharma station on the island, perhaps zoology? And 'The Others' taking the boy, I suppose, would be parapsychology.
But then, since the initiative is based on B. F. Skinner's visions, I believe that all the stations are part of a psychological, and it wouldn't exactly be an accurate study if all the lab rats were told the truth.
Let's look at that Alvar Hanso picture again. Does anyone else think that looks like Locke's father (played by Kevin Tighe)? [Comparison] Remember that Locke's father was wealthy enough to live in a mansion with a gated wall around it and a security guard, so he might even be wealthy enough to payroll the initiative. Maybe that's why Locke said they needed to watch the film again, to see if it really was his father.

TV Guide Spoilers
neil_sa writes "From spoilerfix.com... Major spoilers from a TV Guide interview with Damon Lindelof.
Sawyer's shoulder wound becomes infected while he is held captive and tortured in a pit by the passengers from the airplane's tail section.
Rose's husband Bernard is revealed to be alive.
The name of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's character is revealed in episode 5. He and Cynthia Watros' Libby are two of the lucky "tailies" still alive and kickin'.
The "Orientation" film's jarring jump cuts are actually what Damon Lindelof calls "missing pieces" that resulted when former hatch hermit Desmond spliced the broken movie back together after watching it too many times. Those missing pieces will become "very important plot points down the road."
Lindelof confirms that Walt said, "Push the button. Don't push the button. Bad."
Carlton Cuse admitted that Shannon's jungle encounter with Walt was a vision.
Says Lindelof: "I think the audience is very compelled to figure out exactly where Desmond was running to and, once he gets there, what is he going to do. We told you that he was in a ship wreck, but I think there are a lot of questions about how exactly he came to be here. That's certainly a story on the horizon."
"It's important to note," Lindelof says, "that we've never said when the plane crashed. I think the assumption is that it happened in 2004 when the show premiered, but we've never said that."
Was Mr. Rutherford from Jack's flashback in episode 2.01 Shannon's dad? Her ex-husband? Expect to find out in an episode airing during November sweeps.
"The Helen we meet in flashbacks is not the same Helen that Locke was speaking to on the phone," Lindelof clarifies, sort of.
Lindelof says, "What happened to the 'tailies' that so drastically whittled their numbers is a very compelling mystery that drives us through the first third of the season."
A major character dies in an episode before the holidays.
Expect a reunion between Rose and husband Bernard.

Möjligen i framtiden???
