Oni pacts with 60Frames for comics - Entertainment News, Technology News, Media - Variety
Oni Press has pacted with online entertainment producer 60Frames to create original print and Web-based comicbooks.
First titles include "Men With Guns: Assassin," created by Tom Fontana ("Oz," "Homicide"), as well as "Ark," from "Freaks and Geeks" scribes Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, now showrunners on the CW's upcoming redo of "Beverly Hills, 90210."
The two properties will launch simultaneously in print and as Web series next year.
"Ark," a sci-fi series created by Robbie Thompson and developed by Sachs and Judah, follows a young woman who wakes up in a coffin-like capsule on a large spacecraft. Series will explore how and why she got there and if she can get home.
The Web series will feature a combination of live-action and CGI.
"Men With Guns" is a gritty drama that follows an assassin who is eluding the cop trying to bring him down plus their respective children, who are star-crossed lovers.
Concept originated from Fontana's TV pilot script of the same name but was reimagined by the producer as a Web and comic series. "Assassin" is intended to be the first chapter of an ongoing anthology.
As part of the deal, the two companies will also create Web series based on several of Oni Press' upcoming and existing library titles.
Oni Press partners Joe Nozemack and Eric Gitter will shepherd the projects through their entertainment arm, Closed on Mondays.
Online content producer 60Frames Entertainment was founded last year by former UTA agent Brent Weinstein to finance and syndicate digital entertainment.
Oni Press is one of the larger indie comicbook publishers, with several projects set up around Hollywood to turn into features.
Those include "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" at Universal, with Michael Cera set to star and Edgar Wright to direct, as well as "Leading Man" and "Resurrection," also at U. Meanwhile, "Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things," "The Damned" and "The Return of King Doug" are set up at DreamWorks. Warner Bros. picked up "Maintenance." — via reneeoconnor.info
