War Games 2 Announced
Okay, the good news is that MGM has greenlit a sequel to the 1983 cult geek film War Games. The bad news is, it looks like it's a half-ass made for television or direct to dvd feature. The worst part is we can't even tell.
MGM announced the following five sequels:In the press release, the company says that the MGM Worldwide Television Distribution Group will launch a worldwide sales campaign for the above releases.
- Legally Blonde 3 -- Beauty and brains bring big laughs.
- Cutting Edge 3 -- The romantic drama about the quest for victory among professional ice skaters.
- Into the Blue 2 -- A new and exciting installment based on the action thriller about aspiring treasure hunters.
- WarGames 2 -- Scheduled to begin shooting in Montreal in November, the thrilling story of what happens when top officials try to dismantle the famous computer
- Species 4 -- The fourth installment of the Species franchise continues in Mexico, where new experiments with DNA bring horrific results. An MGM/360 Production, Frank Mancuso, Jr. will oversee production beginning in October on "Species 4." Mancuso has served as the producer or executive producer on the previous "Species" movies.
But what does this mean? At first glance it appears that the company is making the films for television, but that doesn't make sense. The above descriptions sound more like direct-to-dvd features which will eventually see television distribution. Previous reports have tagged Species 4 with a direct-to-DVD distribution, and two out of the top five movies are sequels to direct to video releases. So I'm guessing that all of the above films will be released in that same way.
But either way, I'm going to make the unpopular statement:
I'm all for movie companies making money off bad direct-to-dvd sequels of bad movies.
Before you go all Kill Bill on me, listen up. Who cares really about a sequel to a crappy movie? The whole point is to trick some dumb consumer at blockbuster into saying "I didn't know they made a sequel, let's rent it." As slimey as that may be, I'm all for it. Why? Because it doesn't effect me. I know these movies are going to be bad, and I avoid them at all costs.
My Point
Why ruin the legacy of a good movie with a horrible low budget video sequel?
Case in point: War Games 2.
The rest of the movies on the list have no meaning to me or most of the population, but War Games is another story. A lot of geeks consider this one of the better computer hacking movies of all time. It's up there on my list of cult favorites. And over-all, the average movie-goer likes the film, giving it a 6.9 rating on imdb.
In comparison, not one of the other four movies recieved over a 5.7 rating:
Into the Blue - 5.4
Legally Blonde 2 - 4.3
Species 3 - 4.0
Cutting Edge 2 - 5.7
So if you're going to make a sequel, why not go all out? If anyone at MGM would like to respond, please e-mail me at this link.
War Games starred Matthew Broderick as a young computer whizz kid who accidentally connects into a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Thinking he's playing a computer game, he enters into a game of Global Thermal Nuclear War which innocently starts the countdown to World War 3. The film also starred Ally Sheedy and Michael Madsen.
