The ink may have barely dried on the contract that confirmed Matthew Vaughn – Empire’s very own recently-anointed Best British Director for Layer Cake, don’t forget – as the new director in charge of X-Men 3, but that hasn’t stopped fanboys, fangirls and fanblueskinnedwotsits everywhere from trying to fathom the plot details of the third instalment of Fox/Marvel’s mighty mutant franchise, which begins filming in August.
Well, partially worry no more, folks, for Empire just happened to be in LA this week. And inbetween running into the wonderful Mark Steven Johnson (and his lovely wife) in a Santa Monica toy shop (the Daredevil director assuring anonymity by, um, wearing a Daredevil baseball cap), and being attacked by bees, we took time out to visit the fine folks at Marvel, including the head honcho himself, Avi Arad. And we didn’t waste time in mentioning X.
“We are incredibly excited about Matthew,” said Avi. “We love his sensibilities. I thought Layer Cake was incredibly stylish, with a lot of characters. In some ways he had stylistically the look of X-Men, it was very crisp.”
The fanboy doubters – and let’s face it, if God himself was directing X3 with Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain doing the soundtrack, the whingeing beardies still wouldn’t be happy – have used Vaughn’s inexperience as a director as grist to their moaning mill. But Avi is confident that he’s got the right man. “It’s no less a leap than it was for Bryan [Singer, previous X-director, now shooting Superman Returns]. With movies of this size, it’s hard to wing it. He’s very confident, that’s what I like about him. ‘Yeah, I can do that!’
“Just when he had started,” continued Avi, by way of example, “we had some conversation about one of the characters and he says ‘I know how to introduce him’ and I said ‘let’s hear it’ and it was a really smart thing that’s going to be in the movie. It’s a love-fest.”
Glad to hear it, for we’re pretty damn psyched about Vaughn’s involvement, too. But the mention of a new character leads us onto internet tittle-tattle about the likes of Gambit (Cajun cad who charges cards kinetically, which is really handy if you’re an alliteration freak), Beast (big hairy ape-like bloke with more brains than Dr. Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and that bloke off The Late Review put together) and Angel (flying mutant, not TV’s David Boreanaz) all making their bows this time around, alongside the already-established mutants.
Avi, however, was tight-lipped on all but Angel. “It won’t be a female Angel. I don’t know where that came from, maybe because he looks angelic,” he laughed. “There will be interesting characters that will be introduced. It just has to move forward. Obviously we have Wolverine, and Magneto, Professor X, Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Rogue, all these characters, but then you need to freshen up the story and make it new.”
Still, we’d bet 20p that the character Vaughn was talking about introducing was Gambit. However, we’ll be perfectly happy if we’re surprised in a major way. And with X3, that seems to be the order of the day. For example, most seasoned X-perts would have reckoned that X3 would focus on the return and conversion to the dark side of Jean Grey’s now ultra-powerful and back from the dead Phoenix, also known as The Dark Phoenix Saga. Well, maybe. But then again…
“It should never be this one story. The main characters are more important than Jean Grey,” admitted Avi, which should please Famke Janssen no end. “This is a bigger story. Everybody’s expecting Dark Phoenix, but Dark Phoenix would never be the main show. She’ll be one of the characters, that’s it. There are a lot of stories to tell.”
And which story, pray tell, are we to expect here, given that Zak Penn is still working on the script for the movie?
“We needed something that is very big,” said Avi. “In movie two, it was mutants against humans. In movie one, it was trying to understand. In movie three, it is probably philosophically the most interesting and provocative for all of us.”
Does that mean the introduction of the mutant-killing Sentinels, we ventured, only to be met by Avi’s very own mutant power – the ability to stonewall. Ouch. “It’s funny because when we sat with Tom Rothman [Fox bigwig], he said ‘this has to be an action drama’ and it was music to my ears, because that’s what X-Men is. That opens the door for a concept for this movie that will be disturbing and fascinating and controversial. It will be an interesting debate – should we or shouldn’t we?” Hmm… sounds like mutant genocide could be on the cards. “All I can say is it’s going to be a very interesting dilemma. It’s a very intelligent movie. I think it’s contextually going to be the best. We are so excited.”

X3 casting rumor gets a follow-up! Vinnie Jones for the Juggernaut?!?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a follow up to the Vinnie Jones in X3 rumor I posted last night... or early this morning depending how you look at it. hehe
Anyway, I got an email from Stax over at IGN Film Force pointing me to this article right here. He got one of his sources deep in the bowels of the X3 production to confirm Vinnie Jones being strongly considered for an unnamed villain...
Now, checking in with our spy, sickhang, who initially tipped us off to this story, he/she/it has done some more digging and sent this in:
Hey Quint, More news from the X3 production office. Vinnie Jones is in talks for the role of, get this… Juggernaut! Now that is a sick hang if I have ever seen one.
Vinnie Jones' attitude is spot on for Juggernaut it's not even funny... he has that great empty-eyed angry face stare... When this is signed sealed delivered... or dumped in the trash, I'll be sure to let you folks know. As for now, the "rumor" has been elevated to "possibility." (Not much of a jump, granted, but it's still a step forward from last night.) We've had two different websites with two (or more) different sources that have confirmed that the X3 camp wants Vinnie Jones for a villain, specifically Juggernaut. Now I'm sure it's all a matter of paperwork and agents and lawyers and execs... which means quite a lot still can go wrong, but no matter the outcome we'll keep our ears to the ground!

Why We're Excited About The New X3 Director!
1). Critic Acclaim: "If this debut movie [LAYER CAKE] from SNATCH producer, Matthew Vaughn is not the most surprising, or original gangster movie of recent times, it is one of the most entertaining." - Blender Magazine
2). Award Winner: Recieved the 'Best British Director' award, at the Empire Awards for his film, LAYER CAKE.
3). Producer Experiences: Vaughn has produced over eight films. This means that he knows the in's-and-out's of how to make a film, behind the scenes, and keeping a good enviroment for the cast.
4). Rising Director: He's the next Bryan Singer...but Vaughn seems to have more wild, acidic visuals, than the former. Apply this to X3, and you've got us interested! Judging by his previous work, X3 will have grittier, unique visuals and be more adventurous. Gambit being in X3 is a good thing, because the character is similar to some characters in Vaughn's debut film. Word on the street is that Vaughn personally wrote an introduction scene for Gambit, that will be in X3!
5). Working With The Cast: As a producer and director, Vaughn has worked with very large ensemble casts....that's a very good thing for X3, which will have over 15 main characters!

Matthew Vaughn on X-Men 3 & Stardust
Source: Edward Douglas
April 21, 2005
Director Matthew Vaughn has been making films for a number of years, working as the producer of Guy Richie's three films. When Richie declined on directing the crime drama Layer Cake, Vaughn stepped up and decided to take up the directorial reins. Even before the movie was released in the States, it was announced that Vaughn would also be taking over for Bryan Singer on X-Men 3, much to the surprise of many fans of the franchise.
Almost a month to the date of the announcement, Vaughn was in New York to talk about Layer Cake, so ComingSoon.net/SuperheroHype.com had a chance to learn more about how he got involved in that highly-anticipated project, as well as a second comic book project, and to get his thoughts on how he will approach them.
"It was a mutual finding of each other," Vaughn told us when asked about how his involvement with X-Men 3 came about. "I heard Singer wasn't doing it, and I just told my agent that I'd be intrigued and asked "can you get me in a room?" They saw the film and really liked it. 'X-Men' has sort of taken me by surprise. One of the reasons I'm attracted to it is also the reason why I'm scared of it, is that it's such a short amount of time to get it done. I thought maybe it would be good to do it because there's a lot for me to learn if I do it. The irony is that I haven't got the luxury of casting most of these guys, which is going to be odd, especially if I don't like what they're doing, cause I'm going to have to pull them aside and tell them to ignore everything they did in the last film."
Many people wonder how Vaughn's approach will differ from Singer's two films. "I can emphasize with what's gone on," he said. "I think Singer probably treats it in a more simplistic manner then I'm going to. It's going to expand on things. There's three or four scenes I know people will just be shocked and close to tears."
Things like that tend to make fans worried, but Vaughn didn't seem to nervous about the amount of pressure of him to follow in Singer's footsteps. "I'm all for fans being wary of me; they've got the right to be," he explained. "I'm just going to make the film as good as I can, and hopefully, they'll like it. I know that there's going to be elements I'm going to be bringing to it that will worry the fans in the sense that I want to make a movie that stands up in twenty, thirty years time basically. The film I'm doing is more in the tone of [the Clint Eastwood Western] 'Unforgiven'." He wasn't too worried about the bigness of this type of project compared to his smaller-scale debut. "I just want to make films that I think are entertaining. I like the idea of doing big budget films with a heart."
Vaughn is hoping that his long-time pal Vinnie Jones would be in the movie, more than likely as Juggernaut, but he hasn't signed anything yet. "What's interesting about Juggernaut is that he's the brother of Professor X, and that's why I thought it would be interesting having an English thug opposite Patrick Stewart." Vaughn wasn't too familiar with the origin of the character, but he didn't think it would have anything to do with Vietnam, as with Stan Lee's origin. He said that he had been looking into the Dark Phoenix story, but admitted that he thought "bits of it are great but other bits are a mess."
A few months ago, it was announced that Vaughn would also produce and direct an adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' graphic novel Stardust sometime after he finishes X-Men 3. "I've written the treatment, but I'm not a writer, so I'm just trying to find the right writer," he updated us. "Obviously, to make it into a movie, I have to change it a bit, and put a new third act on. It's going to be cool, sort of like 'Princess Bride' meets 'Midnight Run'." Vaughn mentioned that he has some limited edition art that Charles Vess sent him, but that his movie would look somewhat different. "The way he paints is very Victorian in a way, but I want it to have more of a modern look. I think the problem is that when people say 'we're going to do a fairy tale, so therefore, let's shoot it in a fairytale way.' I wanted to shoot it more modern and grittier."
Vaughn wasn't sure which film he'd get to first after finishing X-Men 3, since he also has a spy film with writer John Hodge on his plate, which was originally intended as a film version of The Man from U.N.C.L.E..
With two very different comic book movies on his plate, we had to ask whether Vaughn was a fan of the medium. "I like comic books, but I don't read them like I used to," he told us. "I quite like graphic novels more than comic books. That's how I got to know Neil Gaiman. I like to be entertained and I like good stories. I think people who write comics take them very seriously, so you get that serious application to quite a commercial world." He wouldn't tell us what his favorite comics were because they might give away the plot for X-Men 3. According to him, " they have become the basis for the film", but he did admit a fondness for Joss Whedon's recent run on the characters.
In the meantime, Layer Cake opens in New York and Los Angeles on May 13, and elsewhere after that.

Grammer To Play Blue Beast in 'X-Men 3'
Fans of Kelsey Grammer are set to find him tough to recognize in his next project - he's playing a furry blue monster in the second X-Men sequel. In X-Men 3, the former Frasier star will play oversized mutant Beast, who has not yet appeared in any of the franchise's installments. While there has been a shocked reaction to Grammer's casting, producers of the movie insist he's the perfect choice for the part - because Beast is the most intelligent of all the mutants. Snatch star Vinnie Jones is also set to undergo a huge image overhaul when he plays villainous Juggernaut in the movie. His character is a 900 pound metal-clad battering ram. The sci-fi series stars Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn. The movie, to be directed by Matthew Vaughn, is set to debut in May next year.

Matthew Vaughn Exits X-Men 3
Source: Variety
May 31, 2005
With just nine weeks to go until principal photography starts on X-Men 3, director Matthew Vaughn has exited the 20th Century Fox project for personal reasons.
In a statement, the studio said the London-based Vaughn had planned to travel between his home and the film's Vancouver locations, but "as the shooting schedule evolved, he realized he would have to move to Los Angeles and Vancouver for at least a year. Not wishing to uproot his family for an extended period, Vaughn opted to depart the production."
All the cast members of the first two films are coming back for the third installment. It was recently announced that Kelsey Grammer would play Beast and Vinnie Jones is taking on Juggernaut, with Lost star Maggie Grace in talks for the role of Kitty Pryde.
Having produced Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Vaughn made his directorial debut with Layer Cake. "X3" would have been Vaughn's first big-budget studio project.

Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
Did you hear that sound just now? I think that was the other shoe finally dropping...
In talking to people in and around the X-MEN camp over the last month or so, it became obvious that Matthew Vaughn was really excited about making an X-MEN movie, but that he was also feeling a lot of pressure regarding this particular X-MEN movie’s production schedule. As with any film of this size, there were a lot of people exerting control over the film, and Matthew dug in for a series of important fights. He managed to convince the studio to cast Kelsey Grammer as The Beast, something that he was very proud of, and together with Zak Penn and Simon Kinsberg, he worked on the script that has evidently had the actors all excited about what they’re going to get to do. It looked like Matthew had finally reached a point where he was confident that the film could be made the right way in the time they had to make it, and he sounded ready to go. Now, nine weeks out, we’ve got word that Vaughn is off the film and on his way back to England. As soon as I heard this, I called Marvel Studios to get their reaction, and I ended up talking with Avi Arad, who confirmed that Vaughn has indeed left the film.
”This is not a case of creative differences,” Avi said. “This is a personal decision by Matthew, and I can tell you that he is heartbroken. He loved this material, and he wanted to make this film.” Vaughn has evidently already left to deal with whatever personal issue requires his attention, and Marvel and Fox are expected to make an announcement in the next few days regarding both the casting of Angel (who plays “a major role” in the film, according to Avi) and the new director, who may actually be someone who had circled the film earlier but who wasn’t available at that point.
Hey... didn’t Joss Whedon just finish SERENITY?
Excuse me. Just thinking out loud. Whoever steps in, they’re going to have to hit the ground running. Avi says that they’re still committed to starting work on the film in nine weeks in Vancouver, and they’re still planning to have the film in release on Memorial Day 2006. “We think this is better than either part 1 or 2,” Avi said. “This is the most controversial, classic X-MEN story we may ever tell, and I can’t wait until people hear the big idea that holds this all together.” At the rate these guys are moving, we’re not going to have to wait long at all. More as the story develops...
http://www.aintitcoo...ay.cgi?id=20349
