Fjärde säsong för Torchwood? *hoppas hoppas*

Torchwood might not have concluded its run at the end of the thrilling miniseries Children of Earth after all - Ianto’s tragic death not withstanding. The new year could bring some “very good news” for fans of the sexy sci-fi series, creator Russell T. Davies tells TV Guide Magazine.

“The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We’ve got great ideas for the show. I think there’s a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season],” Davies says. John Barrowman is finishing his run in “La Cage Aux Folles” in London, so there’s plenty of time to trade his feather boa for Captain Jack’s trench coat.

Jag hoppas med. Mitt första möte med TW höll på att sluta med att jag övergav serien. Gav dock inte upp och det hela har resulterat i att den numera är en av mina favoritserier. Så mera TW till folket låter så en bra idé.

Jag hoppas också på att en säsong 4 kommer att bli av, men jag är lite tvådelad.. Med bara Gwen och Jack så blir det lite fattigt (även om man skulle kunna göra en hel serie om bara Jack.. )Sedan får jag fortfarande ångest efter children of earth avsnitten.. det känns som en svår come-back (men det är kanske därför jag inte är författare.. lol) Men helt klart vill jag ha tillbaka torchwood igen

13 Episodes For Torchwood Series Four, Confirms Barrowman

Torchwood is coming back for a fourth series, confirmed John Barrowman on Steve Wright's radio show this afternoon. And he revealed it will back up to 13 episodes, after the mini-series experiment with "Children Of Earth".

"We are discussing the future of Torchwood, because most definitely Torchwood will come back to the BBC," Barrowman told the DJ. "We're not sure when, because we have to sort out the logistics of the filming, and it's already been said that it will be 13 episodes rather than five."

Iofs bara rykten men jag hoppas på en fortsättning och även om jag inte sett miniserien än (och ska inte döma ut den på förhand) så tycker jag 13 avsnitt är perfekt för en serie. Var mycket skeptisk till det formatet tidigare, men nu föredrar jag nästan att säsongerna inte är längre än så.

Jag håller med dig Carty, 13 avsnitt är idealt för dom flesta TV-serier. Men samtidigt så är tredje säsongen av TW den överlägset bästa i serien och hade dom dragit ut den storyn längre så hade det förmodligen inte funkat lika bra. Det bästa tror jag skulle vara om dom hade 2 miniarcar på 4-5 avsnitt och ett par stand alones däremellan.

Sen hoppas jag verkligen att dom fortsätter på den ton dom som dom slog an på i s3 och inte går tillbaka till hur det var i dom två första säsongerna.

Det skulle ju gå att ordna, ditt förslag med två huvudarcer samt några firstående avsnitt. Låter som en lockande tanke faktiskt. Är väl inte helt omöjligt att vi kanske får se det? Dom kanske fick blodad tand av formatet som säsong 3 har.

Låter intressant det där sista du skrev. Har ju inte sett säsong 3 än men gillade dom två första säsongerna även om dom är ojämna. Kanske att dom hittade rätt i det nya formatet. Får leta och se om du postade något om säsong 3 i forumets tråd för den.

Dom två första säsongerna är väldigt ojämna ja. Dessutom lyckas TW aldrig riktigt slita sig loss och utmärka sig från Doctor Who som konsistent är en bättre serie fram till s3. Först där känner jag att RTD får till vad han menade när han ville göra en mörkare version av DW. Men mycket beror också på hur teamet kommer att se ut.

Och jag tror jag skrev en sammanfattande kommentar om säsongen i s3 tråden.

Instämmer till fullo. Men nu kanske TW är på rätt väg om vi har tur. Det känns ju så. Läste det du skrev om säsong 3 och får den känslan ännu mer efter det. För i grunden känns ju TW lite som en oslipad diamant. Man måste bara finputsa lite på den så kanske den blir värd ännu mer. Det ska bli riktigt intressant att se vilket team man sätter samman. Misslyckas man där har man nog en väldigt lång uppförsbacke även om dom har bra manus och regissörer osv. Iofs är det ju samma sak tvärtom.

Måste dessutom se till att snabba på lite med att se säsong 3. Blev riktigt sugen nu efter att ha läst vad du och dom andra tyckte om den.

Ja visst var det sant: det blir en fjärde säsong och denna gång har handlingen flyttats till USA. Skönt att Captain Jack och Gwen är med.

BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network, Starz Entertainment, have today announced a three way co-production partnership that will develop a new series of the hit BBC sci-fi drama Torchwood. BBC Worldwide will also distribute the series to broadcasters globally.

The 10-episode instalment will be written by a team led by Torchwood creator, Russell T Davies, and produced by BBC Worldwide Productions. Davies and BBC Worldwide Productions’ SVP Scripted, Julie Gardner, return as executive producers with BBC Worldwide Productions EVP Jane Tranter. The series has been commissioned by Controller BBC ONE, Jay Hunt, Controller BBC Drama, Ben Stephenson, and Starz President and CEO, Chris Albrecht.

While previous series were based on location in Cardiff, Wales, this new instalment will see storylines widen to include locations in the U.S. and around the world. John Barrowman and Eve Myles will return in their roles as Captain Jack and Gwen respectively, along with new faces.

Announcing the commission, Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning said: "We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and Julie. Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder than ever"

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions, added: "Torchwood has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive instalment yet."

Torchwood is a drama that puts extraterrestrial threats into a very real world, and asks how humanity deals with the danger - while fighting mankind's darkest instincts. The series was originally commissioned and produced in 2006 by BBC Cymru Wales, with the latest high octane series capturing UK audiences of more than 6 million.

BBC Worldwide has distributed previous Torchwood series around the world to territories such as Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia and across Latin America.

In unbelievably good news of the day, TORCHWOOD is coming back in the Summer of 2011 with John Barrowman (Capt. Jack) and Eve Myles (Gwen) returning along with some new faces reflecting the more international scope of the series.

Now here’s the crazy thing, this time it’s Starz that will debut the 10-episodes new series in the US, while BBC One will debut it in the UK and BBC Worldwide will distribute the show outside the U.S. This is a co-production between Starz, BBC Cymru Wales and BBC Worldwide.
Russell T Davies and BBC Worldwide Productions’ SVP Scripted Julie Gardner return as executive producers, with Davies also serving as show-runner for the new Torchwood.

“Russell, Jane and Julie came to us with a compelling vision for the evolution of the ‘Torchwood’ saga that really takes the story into whole new areas,” added Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz Media the production and development division of Starz. “The compelling story and characters this trio created provide a strong template for driving this narrative in exciting ways.”

Well, I’m beyond excited, after the amazing Torchwood: Children of Earth episodes, it has taken way too long for us to get more Torchwood.

The new story will follow a CIA agent (Rex) and analyst (Ester) who tackle an alien-related global issue. Torchwood, having been destroyed and disbanded, is "like a legend now ... it's like something that's ceased to exist and is now spoken of only in whispers." Soon, Rex and Ester are on the run and are seeking out the help of Captain Jack and Gwen.

"The two teams coming together is a big part of the story -- are they friends or enemies? There's a lot of sparks and excitement."

"We definitely have a really big story to tell," added executive producer Julie Gardner. "It's absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience." ....

The ten episodes will be very fast paced, telling a self-contained story with the miniseries "Children of Earth" being used as a template.

Being on Starz, the show could potentially take advantage of looser standards for nudity and violence.

"I've always had loose standards and practices," Davies said. "If the story demands intimacy or savagery, we will go there absolutely ... [but] there's nothing better than a great big global thriller that stops for a sex scene -- it's probably hard to make that happen in a thriller."

The team has left Wales for America, as creator Russell T. Davies has left Britain for Los Angeles. The case will tie the two remaining Torchwood members (Jack and Eve Myles's Gwen) to the CIA, and will expand into a world-wide threat. And yet, says Davies, it "will be faithful" to the BBC original.

Davies says this story, which "had been ticking away in my mind for a long while," had not been planned as a Torchwood story at all. "And suddenly I thought, there's a popular show, there's a great story, let's put them together...It felt like it definitely could move forward and become new again."

Though it will be newer and bigger, the tone won't change, says Davies. Barrowman's Jack will still be TV's only bi-sexual hero, character will still be stressed, and humor will still play a large part in the show's make-up.

"I sit there in the editing room saying 'Don't cut that joke! Cut the plot, cut the murder, cut the story, but don't cut the joke.'...It will always be a cheeky show."

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the writing team for series four of Torchwood has been selected by Executive Producer and Lead Writer Russell T Davies.


John Shiban is an Emmy Award nominated American television writer and producer. He has worked on The X-Files and its spin-off The Lone Gunmen, Smallville, Legend of the Seeker and Breaking Bad.

Doris Egan is an American screenwriter, producer, and writer. She has worked on Smallville, Dark Angel, and House.

Jane Espenson is an American television writer and producer who has worked on both situation comedies and serial dramas. She is perhaps best known for her five-year stint as a writer and producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, work for which she shared in a Hugo Award, and as showrunner for Caprica.

John Fay is a British television writer who wrote two episodes of Torchwood, Children of Earth. His work includes episodes of Clocking Off, Blue Murder and Robin Hood. Fay spent several years on the writing staff of Coronation Street, and created the three-part ITV drama series Mobile.

Bah. Verkar som dom har fått fel rubrik på källan du angav. More like "6 ways Torchwood's new season will suck."

Punkt 1 är ju bra per definition: att bygga en säsong som säsong tre är ju helt rätt, eftersom den var bäst hittills. Och det skadar förhoppningsvis inte att den är längre om man lägger alla idéer på standalones åt sidan.

Punkt 2 behöver inte vara särskilt märklig, utan det är ju bara att tänka på att det skett ett tidshopp (ett måste för att visa vem Captain Jack egentligen är för nya tittare). Sedan går det ju använda flashbacks för att komplettera och förklara för oss som tittade redan.

Punkt 3 har ju RTD rätt i allt han säger, så vad är negativt där?

Punkt 4 spelar ju ingen roll egentligen om storyn är bra. Story är alltid viktigare än miljön den utspelar sig i.

Punkt 5 kan jag dock hålla med om. De skulle gärna kunna få försvinna helt.

Punkt 6 är inte särskilt märklig: det ska ju vara som en pilot till en målgrupp som kanske inte sett Torchwood tidigare, så du behöver du nya roller att introducera det hela på. Mycket handlar om rätt casting och rätt formulerat på.

Visst, punkt 1 är bra men punkt 2 tolkar jag som att det inte alls kommer att vara lika mörk stämning i den här säsongen vilket definitivt är negativt.

Punkt 3 har dom aldrig riktigt lyckats med i Torchwood utan är en kvarleva från Doctor Who som var kul där och det låter återigen som dom vill återgå till den mer klämkäcka serie det var förut och det ser jag också som negativt eftersom förra säsongen var så vida överlägsen dom tidigare.

Punkt 4 beror helt på hur dom integrerar det i storyn så där håller jag i princip med. Men en amerikanisering kan verkligen gå åt vilket håll som helst och i min erfarenhet oftast negativt.

Punkt 5...

Punkt 6 beror också helt på castingen och hur dom karaktärerna skrivs så det återstår också att se.

Ok, så 3 ways Torchwood's new season will suck and possibly 2 more.
