Programming - News - BBC and Kudos developing new sci-fi drama - Digital Spy

The makers of Life on Mars, Kudos, are going into space for a new series for the BBC.

Outcasts will depict a future where the existence of the earth is looking bleak, and the inhabitants are desperate to find an alternative home in the universe.

BBC Wales, Kudos Film and Television and Spooks writer Ben Richards are currently in development with the show for BBC One.

Jane Tranter, controller, BBC Fiction, said: "Following the unique success of time travel in Life On Mars, I'm naturally extremely excited about the dynamic duo of Kudos and Ben Richards joining forces to create a further dimension in BBC Drama."

The series will follow a group of social misfits and criminals - the 'outcasts' - who are sent to a new settlement on a nearby planet.

Jane Featherstone, joint managing director, Kudos Film and Television, added: "The colonisation of space by humans is only a matter of time, and we think that Ben Richards' brilliant vision of what life will be like when that happens will offer audiences a dramatic, original and entertaining new drama arena."

"Created by Ben Richards (Spooks, The Fixer, Party Animals), Outcasts is set on a recently-discovered planet and tells of the dilemmas, loves and lives of a group of people setting up a new world.

"This life-sustaining planet is now home to the surviving population from Earth. Here there is a chance to start again, to bring the lessons learnt from Earth and to put them into action on a new planet.

"Set in 2040, Outcasts begins on the day the last known transporter from Earth arrives, prompting great excitement on the new planet: Who is on board? Friends and loved ones? Important supplies and news from Earth? But also many questions: Will the new people bring the problems of Earth with them? Will the mistakes that destroyed Earth be repeated? Will the arrival of a new, would-be leader, rock the fragile and precarious equilibrium of our fresh, unified and courageous new world?

"Outcasts is an 8 x 60-minute series and will be produced by Richard Fell (Inspector Lynley, Blood & Oil, Fantabulosa) and directed by Bharat Nalluri (Tsunami, Spooks, Hustle, Life On Mars).

"Shooting starts in South Africa in April 2010 with casting to be confirmed."

Kudos har ju gjort bra grejer förr, och sci-fi + bbc är alltid intressant.

Konceptet verkar dessutom rätt bra, fick lite BSG-vibbar.

börjar visas i december.

A show about a group of individuals building a new life on another planet called Carpathia, Outcasts also stars Ugly Betty's Eric Mabius and Spook's (MI-5 in the U.S.) Hermione Norris. When the series starts, the small band of pioneers will have lost contract with Earth and have to face all sorts of as-yet-undisclosed mysteries.

With Bamber, Mabius and Norris on board, Outcasts will definitely be worth a look come December, when the eight-part series airs on BBC America.

Jag kollade precis på avsnitt 1 (2 har sänts redan) av den här serien och den verkar bli riktigt bra.
De få negativa sakerna skulle väl vara specialeffekterna som är lite klena på vissa ställen och en del av dialogerna.
Det är förvånande iom att det är BBC som producerar och att serien har bra skådisar, förhoppningsvis blir det bättre redan i nästa avsnitt.

Bra handling (jag gillar den här sortens historier) och härligt fritt från, det ibland, tillrättalagda amerikanska berättandet. Rekommenderas!

Har själv också bara sett första avsnittet och jag tyckte det var ganska dåligt näst in till komiskt på vissa ställen (fast det inte var menat så).
Men jag hoppas att serien blir bättre jag ska se andra avsnittet och hoppas på att det blir bättre.

Hur är det med BSG-vibbarna? Mr Bamber gick ju ut och sa att det fanns en hel del sådana. Det är ett fasligt stort plus i min bok.

Visst finns det BSG vibbar. En spillra av mänskligheten är kvar för att kämpa för sin överlevnad under hårda förhållanden. Och givetvis finns det motsättningar mellan de överlevande. Ungefär där slutar likheterna. Storyn känns märkligt konstruerad, jag får ingen vidare bra känsla av någon av karaktärerna. Den enda jag bryr mig om är Jamie Bambers karaktär som är avsnittets stora bad guy. Jag brukar säga att det är ett dåligt tecken när man sitter och håller på the bad guys när det inte är meningen att man ska göra det, men gud vad jag ville att han skulle skjuta den gnälliga tjejen som följde efter honom i slutet. Dialogen är riktigt taffligt skriven. Det känns som ett dåligt hopkok av trötta gamla klyschor och jobbiga pretto grejer som William Blake dikten. Sen när ska 5-åringar lära sig William Blake? Och det är synd för någonstans här finns en bra serie. Det är en bra idé. Jag gillar Liam Cunningham och Hermonie Norris. (hjälper föga när dom får tampas med sånt här manus) Nej fy vad tråkigt det här var. Jag hade verkligen hoppats på nåt bättre.

Jag orkade inte ta mig igenom första avsnittet men ska ge serien en ny chans så småningom. Kanske blir det redan om 3 veckor då jag inte kommer ha något att göra under de kommande 6 veckorna..
