Ännu en remake

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

This remake of the beloved 1951 sci-fi classic about an alien man and his robot who come to earth in a saucer-shape spacecraft is said to star Keanu Reeves as the man. In the original film they tell the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.

Now was there anything to suggest in director Scott Derrickson’s CV to suggest that he is ideally suited to remake The Day the Earth Stood Still, a 1950s film justifiably considered to be a classic of the genre? Were the studio execs at Fox so impressed with The Exorcism of Emily Rose that they thought, “Hey, let’s give this guy a chance to make a new version of that cool 1950s flick we saw on the telly the other night”?

At least the previous sci-fi classic to be remade by Fox had Tim Burton (Planet of the Apes) — but remember what a pointless mess that movie still turned out to be? Didn’t the Fox suits learn anything?

Yes, we here at SciFiMoviePage.com think that remaking a beloved classic such as The Day the Earth Stood Still is one of the worst ideas in the history of bad ideas. Why bother remaking a classic flick if there are so many great unfilmed sci-fi stories out there? By remaking a classic you just come across as arrogant and misguided – just what was it that made you think that you can do a better job than an acclaimed director like Robert Wise? — but if you turn some obscure SF novel into a nice movie everybody will love you for it.

Hmm, mycket av charmen med den gammla filmen är just tiden den gjordes. Hade samma film gjorts idag så hade den troligen varit dålig. Jag tror inte det här blir bra eller så blir det inte troget orinalet.

Jennifer Connelly has signed on to star alongside Keanu Reeves in The Day the Earth Stood Still for 20th Century Fox, according to Variety. Scott Derrickson will direct the pic as his follow-up to The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Ryne Douglas Pearson wrote the screenplay; David Scarpa penned a recent draft. The story kicks off as aliens land on Earth carrying a message for all humans: Live in peace or be destroyed. Connelly is set to portray Helen Benson, the role Patricia Neal played in the 1951 original. Fox has set a December start date in Vancouver.

Seriöst, jag ser inte hur något gott ska komma ur det här eller hur de tänker få handlingen att gå ihop. Originalet är präglat av sin epok till så hög grad att det för mig är ofattbart hur storyn skulle kunna fungera i en annan tidsram. En nyinspelning ligger helt enkelt fel i tiden. På 50-talet anade man inte det enorma (kanske t.o.m ouppnåeliga) teknologiska gapet mellan kärnvapenbestyckade raketer och interstellära resor men idag är det svårt att bortse från. Även om vi visste att det fanns en utomjordisk civilisation någonstans som vi ville utplåna, vad i helsike skulle vi kunna göra mot dem? Vi har inte ens satt fot på vår närmsta grannplanet än. De mänskliga skapelser som har nått längst bort från Jorden är Voyager-sonderna som nyligen lämnade solsystemet och de skickades upp för 30 år sen. Så idén att vi inom en snar framtid kan utgöra ett hot mot andra världar klingar ju rätt falskt.

Vidare så lär anno 2008 inte vara den lämpligaste tidpunkten för Klaatu att titta in. Sett till antalet väpnade konflikter är världen nämligen fredligare nu än på länge. Att det inte tycks så beror på att vi i det globaliserade samhället via massmedia ständigt exponeras för de kvarvarande. Tanken var ju att Klaatu inte hade för avsikt att lägga sig i våra inre angelägenheter och redan i originalet framstod hans hot om att förinta mänskligheten, som möjligen skulle kunna bli ett interplanetärt gissel, lite som översitteri... så vad blir hans budskap nu? "Sluta självmordsbomba varandra... annars utplånar vi er"? Eller "sluta förstöra er miljö... annars gör vi det åt er"? Låter ju helt barockt. Vad kan de komma upp med som inte får Klaatu att låta som en "colossal dick", som någon på AB uttryckte det?

The Hollywood Reporter - Hamm probes space visitor in 'Stood Still'

Golden Globe nominee Jon Hamm of "Mad Men" will star opposite Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in the sci-fi remake "The Day the Earth Stood Still" for Fox.

Hamm will play Dr. Granier, a NASA official who recruits Helen (Connelly) for the scientific team investigating an alien's arrival on Earth. Reeves plays Klaatu, the alien who has a simple message: Live in peace or be destroyed.

Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose") will direct the update of Robert Wise's 1951 classic from a screenplay by David Scarpa. Erwin Stoff and Paul Harris Boardman are producing the project. Principal photography began Dec. 12 in Vancouver. Hamm started shooting Tuesday, according to the studio.

Hamm is up for a Golden Globe as lead actor in a drama for his role on AMC's "Mad Men," which also earned a nom for drama series. He next will be seen with Josh Lucas in the indie thriller "The Boy in the Box."

Hamm is represented by ICM and Forward Entertainment.

Skulle vara mycket mer spänande om de följde "orginal" boken "Farewell to the Master" Då kan man komma runt Mjolnir kritik. Alla tror att Klaatu är här för att hjälpa männskligheten....men Klaatu XXXX XXXX vilket sätter en enorm spin på historien och Gnut sista XXXX är lysande

satte XXX så att jag inte skulle spoila de roliga om folk bestämmer sig för att läsa boken.

Bästa rollprestation jag sett honom göra var i "Even Cowgirls get the Blues", en riktigt skum film där Uma Thurman gick omkring med jättetummar och liftade. Reeves var med i drygt 10 sekunder, han skulle hälsa på Uma men fick en hostattack och bars bort.

Bloody-Disgusting learned exclusively this evening that Kathy Bates (Misery) and little Jaden Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness) have joined Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm in 20th Century Fox's remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is now filming in Vancouver, Canada through March. Directed by Scott Derrickson (Exorcism of Emily Rose), in the original 1951 film an alien lands and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.

Monty Python veteran John Cleese will join Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Kathy Bates and Jaden Smith in 20th Century Fox's remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, according to IGN. Cleese will play physicist Dr. Barnhardt, a Nobel Prize laureate who plays a key part in figuring out the mission and meaning of the arrival of the alien Klaatu (played by Reeves). In the original 1951 film an alien lands and tells the people of Earth that they must live peacefully or be destroyed as a danger to other planets.

With mankind’s first uncertain steps into the atomic age comes a warning from beyond the stars: cease your fighting and your wars or you will be destroyed. “The decision rests with you,” Klaatu says by way of farewell at the end of “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” a classic of Cold War science-fiction from 1951.

Fifty years later and Klaatu has a new message for humanity, but one with equally dire consequences should we choose to ignore it, Keanu Reeves, who is playing the alien in Scott Derrickson’s upcoming remake, told MTV News.

“The first one was borne out of the cold war and nuclear détente. Klaatu came and was saying cease and desist with your violence. If you can’t do it yourselves we’re going to do it. That was the film of that day,” Reeves explained. “The version I was just working on, instead of being man against man, it’s more about man against nature. My Klaatu says that if the Earth dies, you die. If you die, the earth survives. I’m a friend to the earth.”

While humanity still engages in a staggering number of international conflicts, the environmental message is one that, not only encompasses wars, and fights, and terrorism, but one that goes beyond constrictions to become a millennial message of “what we are doing and who we are as a species,” Reeves insisted. “We’re trying to reach beyond the idea of [just] environmentalism.”

Among the other changes in the film, none may be more radical than Gort, Klaatu’s robot companion (or leader in some versions), that, let’s face it, looked like the tin-man in 1951. FX should change that, right?

“Hey man, don’t put that tin man down! That was iconoclastic!” Reeves protested. “[But] yes, we have another version of the [robot].”

One thing that won’t change? According to Reeves, he still says the immortal words, “Klaatu barada nikto.”

Fox aired an extended seven minute look at The Day The Earth Stood Still during Fringe last night. It’s basically a nicely edited together version of the footage which was shown at this year’s comic con.
