John Cusack set for '2012'
Actor to star in Roland Emmerich's thriller

John Cusack has signed on to topline Roland Emmerich's apocalyptic thriller "2012" for Columbia Pictures.

"Redbelt" star Chiwetel Ejiofor also is in talks to join the big-budget epic, which chronicles the end days of human civilization.

Story centers on an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to prevent an apocalypse predicted by the ancient Mayans.

Emmerich and Harald Kloser penned the screenplay, which Sony bought in February.

Shooting will begin in July in Los Angeles, barring a SAG strike.

Emmerich and Kloser are producing. Michael Wimer, Mark Gordon and Ute Emmerich are exec producing.

Cusack, who most recently starred in the horror film "1408," will next be seen in satire "War, Inc.," which he also wrote and produced. He is currently shooting "Shanghai" for the Weinstein Co.

Glover, Others Eye 2012

Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Oliver Platt are in discussions to join 2012, Columbia's epic disaster project, which Roland Emmerich is directing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

2012 centers on a global cataclysm and tells the heroic struggle of the survivors.

Glover is in talks to play the president, with Newton in discussions to play his daughter. Platt is in negotiations to play the president's chief of staff.

John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor already are on board.

Emmerich is directing a script he penned with his 10,000 BC co-writer Harald Kloser.

The studio is planning a July 10, 2009, release, with filming set to begin in July, unless there is an actors strike.

Today it was announced that Amanda Peet (X-Files: I Want to Believe) has landed the female lead in Roland Emmerich's epic disaster project 2012. Peet is joining a strong ensemble cast led by John Cusack that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Oliver Platt. "2012" revolves around a global cataclysm and the heroic struggle of the survivors. Peet is playing Cusack's ex-wife, newly married to a wealthy man. Cusack plays a divorced father trying to become a writer while holding a job as a limo driver . Emmerich wrote the script with Harald Kloser. Barring an actors strike, the movie will shoot in July. The release date for "2012" is July 10, 2009.

Thomas McCarthy, the writer and director behind the season's indie sleeper hit, "The Visitor," is moving into disaster movie territory by booking a role in Roland Emmerich's 2012. He will star alongside John Cusack that includes Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Oliver Platt. McCarthy will play the boyfriend of Peet, who is the ex-wife of Cusack's character.

McCarthy said he is driven to roles out of curiosity.

"As an actor, I've never worked on anything with this scale before, and I always go see these movies," he said. "And then there's the director part of me. I get really excited about working with directors like this, who do things that are so wildly different from me. And he really is. He works on a totally different canvas."

"It's something (Gersh agent Rhonda Price) and I talk about: finding new things to do that are different and exciting from what we've done before, and this fits the bill."

While some actors do big studio projects in order to sustain themselves in between indie character films, this is not the case here, McCarthy said.

"This does have a big budget and I do make more money, which is nice, but I know if you take a job like this just for the money, you'll be miserable," he said. "There's got to be something as an actor, and also in this case, as a director, that I'm excited about. There are other ways for me to make money."

McCarthy, much like John Sayles, who takes on studio writing jobs in between his movies, also does rewrites and polishes for the big companies.

McCarthy lately has been taking roles in movies being made by writer-directors as a way to learn things that apply to his own work, which is why he has gigs in Tony Gilroy's "Duplicity" and "Peter Jackson's" The Lovely Bones."

"As a writer-director I love to work with other writer-directors," he said. "It's such a bonus for me. I'm not only watching and observing, I'm involved in the process. It's cool luxury ... I've only done two films, so there's still a lot to learn here."

"2012" is set to shoot in August in Vancouver. McCarthy also will begin working on a new script that he intends to direct.

In the meantime, he is enjoying the response to "Visitor," which has grossed more than $7.6 million since Overture began its slow rollout in April.

"We have emerged as a nice alternative to the big movies that come out every weekend," he said. "At some point, you probably want to see something a little different and I think we've become that something different ... I didn't know how it would hold up, but I am pleasantly surprised and obviously very happy."

Singaporean actor Chin Han (The Dark Knight) will next star in Roland Emmerich's 2012. Chin Han joins an ensemble cast that includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejifor and Danny Glover. The pic, co-written and to be produced and directed by Emmerich for Centropolis Entertainment and Columbia Studios, begins shooting in Vancouver in August.

"I have always enjoyed Roland Emmerich's epic take on sci-fi and disaster movies and really look forward to being a part of this film," Chin Han said.

'2012' release date pushed back

Sony moves sci-fi pic to November

In a move designed to maximize playability, Sony is delaying the release of Roland Emmerich's sci-fi action pic "2012" from July 10 to Nov. 13, two weekends before the lucrative Thanksgiving session.

"We've had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said Tuesday. "We've got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that."

The 007 film "Quantum of Solace" unspooled amid light competition over the comparable frame last year to gross $67.5 million, en route to a franchise-topping $167 million domestically.

This time around, the studio has slotted its tentpole against two wide openers -- Warner Bros.' caper pic "Sherlock Holmes," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and Fox's Dwayne Johnson comedy "The Tooth Fairy." It wasn't clear whether the arrival of "2012" would prompt the departure of either of those pics for clearer pastures.

Sony execs said "2012" could have been completed by its summer date, though the new date will add some extra time for the effects-laden production. The studio's remaining films set for release this summer include "The Taking of Pelham 123," an action pic starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta; "The Year One," a comedy toplined by Jack Black and Michael Cera; "Julie and Julia," a drama featuring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams; "District 9," a sci-fi movie with Jason Cope and Sharlto Copley; and "Mardi Gras," a comedy starring Nicholas D'Agosto and Josh Gad.

Många frågor dök upp i mitt huvud efter att ha sett trailern, ok för disastermovies, men vatten som svämmar över himalaya? Antingen så finns det väldigt mycket vatten på jorden, eller så sjunker himalaya neråt. Om det är det senare så borde munkarna dö av dykarsjukan ganska snabbt. Inte för att jag vill ha tok realistiska grejor, men nån stans får man sätta gränser. Blev en bra poster dock.
