Clash of the Titans set for remake | News | guardian.co.uk Film

A remake of Clash of the Titans is one of two similar projects locked in a race to the screen as Hollywood bids to revive that old chestnut, the mythological Greek adventure genre.

Until last night, Warner Bros executives thought they were in the driving seat with their plans to revisit the 1981 MGM classic about the exploits of the Greek hero Perseus.

The project had been in the works for some time and studio chiefs finally gave it the greenlight after hiring The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier.

However Warner Bros now find themselves in a two-horse race after 300 producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari announced yesterday that they were mounting a rival project titled War of Gods.

Clash of the Titans featured the special effects work of Ray Harryhausen and gave Harry Hamlin arguably his best film role opposite Laurence Olivier and Maggie Smith as the Greek warrior who counted among his career highlights the decapitation of the snake-headed Medusa.

War of Gods centres on the young Greek hero Theseus as he joins the deities in a struggle against demons and titans.

Both projects boast strong elements. Clash of the Titans' stock has rocketed with the arrival of Leterrier, the dynamic Frenchman who graduated from low budget action films like Transporter 2 and Danny The Dog to the recent version of The Incredible Hulk.

War of the Gods is being fast-tracked to start filming before the end of the year and reunites Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari, who produced the global smash 300. It is understood both projects will use the green screen technology that gave that film its distinctive look. Expect a flurry of casting announcements in the coming days.

A clash of Greek-mythology movies is shaping up: Relativity Media is developing War of Gods, while Warner Brothers is readying a remake of Clash of the Titans, Variety reported.

Charley and Vlas Parlapanides wrote the script for War, which will be directed by Tarsem Singh (The Fall).

The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier, meanwhile, will helm Lawrence Kasdan's script of Clash of the Titans.

Warner essentially gave a green light to Clash of the Titans right after landing Leterrier. Relativity, which is fully financing "War of Gods," has fast-tracked it to start production by year's end.

Both pictures are expected to use the green-screen techniques that gave 300 a complex look at a reasonable budget.

War of Gods is set in war-torn ancient Greece, as the young warrior prince Theseus leads his men in a battle against evil that will see the gods fighting with soldiers against demons and titans.

Clash of the Titans centers on Perseus, the son of Zeus, who must overcome a series of obstacles to save his beloved Princess Andromeda, including cutting off the serpent-tressed head of Medusa, who can turn a man to stone with a single glance.

The original 1981 Clash of the Titans starred Harry Hamlin as Perseus and Laurence Olivier as Zeus but is best remembered for Ray Harryhausen's visual effects, which brought to life Medusa, the Kraken and other creatures.

EcranLarge.com tells us they have posted a new video interview with The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier in which he talks about taking on the Clash of the Titans remake at Warner Bros. Pictures.

The project is based on the 1981 mythical adventure film about the myth of Perseus. To win the right to marry his love (Andromeda) and fufill his destiny, Perseus must complete various quests and battle both Medusa and the Kraken monster in order to save the Princess Andromeda.

Louis Leterrier’s got more than the next Hulk or “1602” on his mind – he’s also just started prepping a remake of “Clash of the Titans,” according to his character designer Aaron Sims.

“We worked together on the ‘Hulk’ to make something visually interesting,” Sims said, “and I had started designs with a previous director for ‘Clash of the Titans,’ but he went away, and now Louis is on board to direct. So he called me up, ‘Hey, let’s work together,’ and I said, ‘Definitely!’”

Sims is starting to conceptualize the Medusa and the Kraken monster designs, and it’s more challenging than you might think. (And it’s one that “Hercules” is avoiding).

“There’s a whole mythology to all of this,” he said. “So what do you create that’s not just something we’ve all seen before? Everything, from Pegasus to the Titans, what have we not seen yet that’s going to be really epic-looking and still speaks to Greek mythology?”

Sims faced a similar challenge on the Hulk, because that’s an iconic image from all the comic books, TV series, and the previous movie, but that’s when he decided “you can’t appeal to everybody.” “You can put a little of the old movie in for the diehards, but a new audience may not even care, so how do you merge all that?” he asked.

So for Medusa, that means he’s trying to decide, as far as the snakes for her hair are concerned, “are they all the same snake? Do they look more like hair? Are they different in silhouette or in light? And how much of a human face does she have, or is it more like a snake?” he said. Too much snake-face, and you run into the Voldemort problem. “I was working on one design,” Sims said, “and people said, ‘That reminds me of Voldemort,’ because there was no nose. You have to be careful so it still looks like it’s an original idea.”

Mads Mikkelsen har fått en roll i kommande nya versionen av filmen "The clash of the titans". Den danske skådespelaren ska spela Draco, ledaren för hjälten Perseus livvaktsstyrka Praetoriangardet, skriver Hollywood Reporter.

Det är den franske regissören Louis Leterrier ("The incredible Hulk") som ska göra en nyversion av 1981 års film om den grekiska hjälteberättelsen. Historien kretsar kring Perseus, spelad av Sam Worthington, som ger sig ut på jakt efter sin älskade Andromeda och för att göra upp med monstret Medusa.

Andra namn i rollistan är Gemma Arterton, som Io, medan Alexa Davalos gör rollen som Andromeda.

This afternoon Warner Bros. Pictures sent us the official press release announcing the start of production for their remake of Clash of the Titans, which will find Louis Leterrier behind the helm and star Sam Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ epic action adventure “Clash of the Titans,” being directed by Louis Leterrier (“The Incredible Hulk”). The film stars Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation,” the upcoming “Avatar”) and Academy Award® nominees Liam Neeson (“Taken,” “Schindler’s List”) and Ralph Fiennes (the “Harry Potter” films, “The English Patient”).

In “Clash of the Titans,” the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Leading the international cast is Australian actor Sam Worthington as Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, king of the gods. Worthington will next be seen in this summer’s “Terminator Salvation.” Liam Neeson takes on the role of the mighty Zeus, and Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Hades, god of the underworld, who feeds on human fear. Rounding out the cast is Gemma Arterton (“Quantum of Solace”) as Io, Perseus’ mysterious spiritual guide throughout his journey; Mads Mikkelsen (“Casino Royale”) as Draco, who takes up his sword to join Perseus’ quest; Jason Flemyng (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) as Acrisius, a one-time king-turned-hideous beast; and Alexa Davalos (“Defiance”) as Andromeda, a princess doomed to lose her life if Perseus does not succeed.

Based on the 1981 film of the same name, written by the late Beverley Cross, “Clash of the Titans” is directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi (“Aeon Flux”), story by Travis Beacham (“Dog Days of Summer”) and Hay & Manfredi. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, who produced the drama “We Are Marshall” for Warner Bros. Pictures, and Kevin De La Noy, who last served as an executive producer on the studio’s blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Academy Award® winner Richard D. Zanuck (“Driving Miss Daisy”), who most recently collaborated with Warner Bros. on the comedy hit “Yes Man,” and Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and William Fay, who have teamed with the studio on such hits as “The Dark Knight” and “300.”

The rock-tastic first teaser trailer for the new Clash Of The Titans has arrived online and you can view it below.

This update of the stop-motion-filled 1981 classic switches things up with more mythical monsters, all brought to life using the latest CG techniques.

Our new Perseus is Sam Worthington, a man on a quest to battle the evil overtaking his homelands and aiming to stop nasty old Hades (Ralph Fiennes) from usurping Zeus (Liam Neeson).

Louis Leterrier's version definitely goes for more of a 300/Troy vibe than the original - not shocking, we suppose, and while some of it looks like serious overkill, there's some real eye candy on display here.

Musiken komponeras av Craig Armstrong och Matthew Bellamy (även aktiv i rockgruppen Muse). Den senare rör sig i gener som de flesta involverar ordet rock. Hittar ingen information om i vilka tongångar soundtracket kommer röra sig.

Låten i teaser trailern heter "The Bird And The Worm" och framförs av gruppen "The Used".

Dock är det ju en instrumental version vi hör i trailern. Men visst verkar det stämma om man lyssnar på deras officiella musikvideo till låten?

The First Three Posters for CLASH OF THE TITANS Starring Sam Worthington



Yahoo! Movies has just released the first three posters for the upcoming remake of Clash of the Titans, and they look pretty cool. As I’ve said before, Spring 2010 is going to be a good year for the Greek gods with Clash, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, and the PlayStation 3 game God of War III. However, it looks like Clash and God of War have more in common and that’s fine with me. While I doubt we’ll see Perseus (Sam Worthington) eviscerating a griffin in flight, holding up Medusa’s severed head and soaring on Pegasus isn’t bad either. However, if the MPAA would perhaps relax their no-griffin-evisceration policy so the film can get a PG-13 rating, that would be fantastic.

Five excellent new posters for Clash Of The Titans have arrived online, and they expand into high-res goodness for your viewing pleasure (and your computer's agony), courtesy of UGO.

Yes, you can get a nice, close-up look at the likes of Sam Worthington's Perseus, Gemma Arteton's Io, Liam Neeson's Zeus and some of the monsters, including The Scorpioch and the foul-looking Stygian Witches.

With one or two – especially the witches – looking like something out of Guillermo del Toro's worst nightmares (this is a compliment, by the way), it shows that Warners is largely letting the spectacle do the selling, knowing that it's the battles with the beasts that we'll all be lining up to see.
