Inget snack om vem som ska spela den unga Bilbo än?

Guillermo del Toro: ‘I don’t like Hobbits’!? | /Film
Let me first say, I’m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro and am very excited to see what he will be able to bring the Tolkien’s universe. That said I found the following quote from del Toro in an article on salon.com, talking about how he’s never had any interest in the Lord of the Rings genre of fantasy… wait, what?“I was never into heroic fantasy. At all,” del Toro admitted during a 2006 Cannes interview. “I don’t like little guys and dragons, hairy feet, hobbits — I’ve never been into that at all. I don’t like sword and sorcery. I hate all that stuff.”
Huh? I’m confused. Why did del Toro sign on for this four-year two film commitment? What made him change his mind about an entire genre which he clearly seems “hate”? Again, I’m pretty sure he will make an incredible movie regardless, but I’m interested to know what happened in the last two years that changed his mind on the genre.

Jag har läst Simarillon... den är stor tjock och tungläst. En del intressanta fakta kommer fram där... som tex hur Mordor blev mordor.Guillermo del Toro and The Hobbit Sequel | /Film
Since it was first announced, everyone has been wondering what will become of this supposed Hobbit sequel. For the first time publicly Guillermo del Toro spoke publicly to TheOneRing.net about the planned continuation:“You know, I traveled to New Zealand just a little while ago, and one of the main reasons for going was to sit down and talk about the second film. ‘The Hobbit’, the book, is really one self-contained film, so for the second movie we sat down and worked it out. When we did this we got really excited because this second film is not a ‘tag on’, it’s not ‘filler’, it’s an integral part of telling the story of those 50 years of history lost in the narrative. There will be certain things that we will see from the first movie but from a different point of view, but it will feel like a volume, in the 5 volumes of the entire story. It will not feel like a bridge, I’ve been hearing it called ‘a bridge film’, it’s not, it’s an integral chapter of the story, and I think we’re all on the same page.”
Popular belief is that the sequel would reference The Silmarillion, a collection of J. R. R. Tolkien’s mythopoeic works, edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher Tolkien in 1977. The book contained five parts of The History of Middle-earth, but is considered by most fans to be dense and rather boring. So the question is how much of The Hobbit sequel will be an original creation by del Toro, Jackson and Walsh, and how much of it will actually be adapted from such text.

Over the last year, we’ve made it a point to ask as many of the original actors from “Lord of the Rings” as possible to chime in with their opinion of the eventual “Hobbit” movie, and more specifically, to weigh in with whether or not they’d be game to re-enter the world of Middle Earth.
Sure, not all of their characters appear in “The Hobbit,” but with a second, transitional film that takes place in the years between the two novels, could we possibly see Aragorn, Frodo, Galadriel, and the rest back for another go round? To hear the actors themselves say it, the answer was a resounding yes.
Well, it’s time to put down the pipe weed, Viggo, dust off those ears, Cate, practice your archery Orlando, and get ready to walk around barefoot, Sean and Elijah -– you’re about to get asked to go “back again.”
“I want to be very clear about this. I am not going to recast any actor that is willing and able to work with us,” “recently announced “Hobbit” director Guillermo Del Toro told MTV News. “It would be my hope to bring back the same actors to play the parts. The casting on the trilogy was perfect.”
Does that mean he has no intention of re-casting Bilbo as well? Well, not exactly. For Guillermo’s ideas on who should play Bilbo, make sure you head over to Movies Main, where the talented director talked at length about his plans for “The Hobbit,” including chatter on Smaug, Riddles in the Dark, and more.

MTV: Just two years ago, you were quoted as saying, "I was never into heroic fantasy." Did your views change?
Del Toro: I wasn't. I completely gravitated towards horror. For whatever reason, I never hooked into sword and sorcery. I really rediscovered fantasy through my love of filmmakers as a filmmaker. Something kind of popped and jelled. I now can empathize with one side of the fantasy genre without ever wandering into lubricated musclemen with giant swords. "The Hobbit" occupies a particular seat in fantasy that is irreplaceable. They can dredge up old cadavers in my closet. I'm not running for president. I'm a f---ing filmmaker! I'm just trying to make the movie I want to. (Källa)

What seemed to have turned the decision in Del Toro's favor was his previous working relationship with Jackson in the preproduction phase of the ill-fated "Halo" project. A lot of Hollywood collaborations are the result of previous personal relationships.
Also I think Raimi was the choice of New Line if Jackson couldn't be brought on board. (Like how Weinstein floated John Madden as director of LOTR when Jackson wouldn't play ball with Miramax.) Unfortunately the resultant association with Robert Shaye might have been a point againt him after Jackson came back.
I believe Shaye wanted him, but fan pressure and strong talks of a boycott against Spider-Hobbit was what ultimately made the talks go no further than an initial approach.
Protests? Really? There is really a reason to believe that enough fans were planning a boycott and protests that the studio thought twice? Not saying there wasn't, I just don't know of anything of any magnitude.
Being someone who closely followed Hobbit developments. I'd say the whole Sam Raimi director-fiasco was a play on Shaye's part to pressure PJ into a compromise. Raimi's name was floated by Shaye himself around April or May last year (I think) and he was smartly vague enough about it to have fans irked about something that was already a rankling matter.
In retrospect, Raimi's name disappeared around June or July, which, we know was, was about the time PJ and NL (Shaye and Lynne) resumed talks under the assistance of MGM (Harry Sloan). And ever since the lawsuit got settled in December, there never was talk of Raimi at all, except for the "news" that his name had, at one time, been proposed.
I don't think PJ ever considered Raimi for the part of director anyway, and I think Raimi knew it, which is why he went ahead with his own project "Drag Me To Hell".

TORN - Confirmation - Ian McKellen will Reprise Role as Gandalf
April 30th, 2008
Empire Magazine caught up with Sir Ian McKellen at the UK Premiere of Speed Racer at which he had this to say:
“Yes, it’s true,” he said. “I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it’s not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf.”
The other great tidbit of news is that we have a timeline for the script development - about 6 weeks. Make sure to read the full story and intereview at EMPIRE! (Thanks to Mr. Platt for the heads up!) [Read More]

Text of PJs letter follows:
Several years ago - it seems a lifetime now - I invited 20 questions from fans right at the start of embarking on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. For me, it was an important and enjoyable moment, when I was able to begin a relationship that helped define our attitude to that unique project. It gave me a sense of responsibility that stayed etched in my brain for the next 5 years.
Well, the time has come again! With us right on the cusp of beginning pre-production on The Hobbit, and its companion movie, it seems fitting to do the same thing again.
It’s also fitting that our director, Guillermo Del Toro, will join me in answering the questions, since he will be bringing his considerable personal vision to these two movies. It’s my moment to hand the baton to Guillermo. It’s time for him to address your concerns.
So this is how it will work: we ask fans with an interest in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings to send one question to this website. Ask us anything! Guillermo and I will select and answer the 20 most common questions, so we can both attempt to address the key issues as best we can.
Our answers will be released during a one hour live web chat, hosted by Weta, with both Guillermo and myself logged on. In addition to answering your 20 questions - for the entire hour, we’ll take additional live questions and chat about the projects with anybody who’s interested.
Please send us your questions and Register for the live chat - and we’ll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
Cheers,
Peter Jackson
