Who will have the decisive voice in the difficult decisions; Jackson or Del Toro?
Will Jack Black play a role in the films?
Will we see Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro in cameos?
Is there any truth in rumours of Peter Stormares participation?

Någon som har något förslag på vem Stormare skulle kunna spela...vad säger "ryktet"?

Mania - The Hobbit Enters Pre-Production with Returning Cast
Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Source: Variety
It looks like the long wait for little Hobbit production is over, Lotr fans. Variety is reporting that preproduction is set to begin with "Team Hobbit" (Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh) starting on the scripting of Hobbit: Part I and the sequel in the next few days. Previous reports confirmed that Del Toro would get to work on the script alongside the original creators of the Lord of the Rings trilogy when he was entering the last days before Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters.
On another note, the team has already been in contact with certain actors whose characters are planned for the overall story. Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Andy Serkis (Gollum). Those are the ones confirmed by the trade. If the plan is to split the films and have the timeline explained to the beginning of the original trilogy, it's likely that Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Christopher Lee (Saruman), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) and some other former stars will also be invited back if they wish it. Del toro confirms below."We will all be involved in the script in some fashion but the exact definition is about a week away, " said del Toro. "I am all for keeping the actors who originated the parts, as much as availability and their willingness will allow."
The Hobbit: Part I will hit theaters sometime in winter 2010 while Part II will hit theaters in winter 2011.

Text of PJs letter follows:
Several years ago - it seems a lifetime now - I invited 20 questions from fans right at the start of embarking on The Lord of the Rings trilogy. For me, it was an important and enjoyable moment, when I was able to begin a relationship that helped define our attitude to that unique project. It gave me a sense of responsibility that stayed etched in my brain for the next 5 years.
Well, the time has come again! With us right on the cusp of beginning pre-production on The Hobbit, and its companion movie, it seems fitting to do the same thing again.
It’s also fitting that our director, Guillermo Del Toro, will join me in answering the questions, since he will be bringing his considerable personal vision to these two movies. It’s my moment to hand the baton to Guillermo. It’s time for him to address your concerns.
So this is how it will work: we ask fans with an interest in The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings to send one question to this website. Ask us anything! Guillermo and I will select and answer the 20 most common questions, so we can both attempt to address the key issues as best we can.
Our answers will be released during a one hour live web chat, hosted by Weta, with both Guillermo and myself logged on. In addition to answering your 20 questions - for the entire hour, we’ll take additional live questions and chat about the projects with anybody who’s interested.
Please send us your questions and Register for the live chat - and we’ll talk to you in a couple of weeks.
Cheers,
Peter Jackson

Närmare än så gick de inte.Q: Who will have the decisive voice in the difficult decisions; Jackson or Del Toro?
Frågorma ställdes aldrig (man valde de populäraste, utom vissa "vildingar")Q: Will Jack Black play a role in the films?
Q: Is there any truth in rumours of Peter Stormares participation?
PJ har visst som princip att bara vara cameo när han är regissör, men om "ett läge" uppstod, så kanske... GDT: absolut inte!Q: Will we see Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro in cameos?

Tolkien's son trying to halt production of THE HOBBIT, McKellen and Serkis to reprise roles
Not everybody is excited to see THE HOBBIT go into production soon. 83-year-old Christopher Tolkien, son of J.R.R. Tolkien, is heading into court next week to try and stop the production.
It is also being reported that Sir Ian McKellen is returning as Gandalf and Andy Serkis will play Gollum again.
Christopher Tolkien, 83, is calling for "one last crusade" in a long-running court battle against the producers of The Lord of the Rings only weeks before carpenters are due to begin work in New Zealand on the sets for the latest Middle-earth epic.
He claims the Tolkien family is owed £80m by New Line Cinema under a deal for a 7.5% share of profits that was signed in 1969, when his father reluctantly sold film rights to pay a tax bill.
Today the film-makers will confirm that Sir Ian McKellen is returning to his role as the wizard Gandalf in The Hobbit and that Andy Serkis will reprise his role as the murderous creature Gollum.
Sir Ian Holm, who played the hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, is expected to narrate. Viggo Mortensen has unexpectedly been asked to return as Aragorn, a character who does not appear in the original Hobbit story, published in 1937.
Peter Jackson, who directed the Rings trilogy, is to produce the Hobbit films. The director will be Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican whose grim fantasy Pan's Labyrinth won three Oscars last year.
However, at a hearing on June 6 Christopher Tolkien will ask a Californian judge to back his claim that he can "terminate" film rights to The Hobbit. He is said to be furious with the New Line studio, which earned £3 billion from the Rings trilogy. Tolkien's lawyers accuse New Line of "accounting chicanery". Warner Bros, owner of New Line, declined to comment.

The interview in the upcoming Empire is presented in a preview on empireonline.com:On Bilbo: “In writing the part I obviously am thinking Old Bilbo and Ian Holm. We are writing based on that performance, but other than that, we have ideas. I can tell you that it’s down to a few names that we all agree upon. TORN - Del Toro Posts Heads Up to Ringers in our Forum
June 3rd, 2008
Director Guillermo del Toro recently posted a ‘heads up’ to Tolkien fans in TheOneRing.net’s forum. In the post, Del Toro outlines why his upcoming film ‘Hellboy II’ and last year’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ should not necessarily serve as examples of the tone and theme of the upcoming ‘Hobbit’ films.“It is my dearest hope that this message will prevent speculation of what in “Pan’s Labyrinth” or “Hellboy II” will indicate what the HOBBIT will be. In time there will be definite aesthetic choices that will guide the film towards a yuxtaposition of PJ’s and my visual proclivities but I think it will only be visible in retrospect and it would be almost impossible -and rather perverse- to try and divine it at this stage.“
The post is a lot more extensive than that simple quote, so jump on over to our forum to read the complete entry! And isn’t it great to have Guillermo participating so early in our community? [Forum]

Christopher Lee Would Return as Saruman
Source: Empire Online
June 4, 2008
86-year-old Christopher Lee has expressed his interest in returning as Saruman in Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit and/or the untitled sequel.
While the evil wizard is not featured in the "Lord of the Rings" prequel, the two films give plenty of room for Saruman to return in some aspect. Lee tells Empire Online:
I'd be interested in seeing how that transition from good to evil occurred and, yes, of course I would return to the role if I was asked.
For much more on the wizards' backstory, read the full interview here.

EDIT:
TORN - GDT Talks Spoilers and Hobbit
June 5th
EW.com has posted an article addressing the prevalence of spoilers on the internet, and Guillermo del Toro chimes with a comment about the upcoming ‘Hobbit:’Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro plans on being pretty transparent as he embarks on The Hobbit. “It’s easier to protect the 20 percent of a project that’s really sensitive if you’re open about the other 80 percent,” he says. “I think that’s the way to go, especially with a project like The Hobbit, which is a holy book for so many people. People should know the path you’re walking.”
A quick note about TheOneRing.net and spoilers (if you are new hear) - we do post them but give you ample warning to choose not to read them. Please read the full article at EW.com. Thanks to Silverlode for the heads up on this story. [Read More]

TORN - Could there NOT be a second film?
June 29th, 2008
Defamer is reporting an interesting bit Guillermo del Toro said this week at the Los Angeles Film Festival, first mentioned by Del Toro himself more than a month ago right here on the TORn message boards. When asked about the second movie, Del Toro answered:We believe there is a second movie, if there isn’t, there will not be. If we find it, we will shoot it, but by God, if we do not find it, we will not shoot it. I am anxious to shoot the book, and I’m willing and able to dedicate myself to shooting the [second film].
Guillermo Del Toro also confirmed what material can be used for building the second film:In the four books that are in the domain of the copyright, there are appendices and ideas and things that can be traced without risk. But I have to be careful not to overstep. We believe there is a way to create this film and make it interesting, but it’s too early.
The article goes on to mistakenly say Jackson owns the rights to those four novels, but as we know, the rights are owned by Saul Zaentz and can be used by New Line Cinema through a concession. Language warning for those who follow the link.
