Ain't It Cool - Cylon-Centric Battlestar Galactica TV-Movie Prequel To Hit SciFi Subsequent To Series Finale!
Wednesday, August 6, 2008
The “Battlestar Galactica” TV-movie directed by Edward James Olmos from a teleplay by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" vet Jane Espenson will hit SciFi in 2009 -- after the series finale airs.
As anticipated, the untitled movie will, like "Razor," be a prequel project. (But it is not to be confused with the separate "Galactica" prequel project "Caprica," a pilot movie scripted by Ronald D. Moore that deals with the "birth" of the Cylons half a century earlier.)
The Los Angeles Times has the plot of the untitled prequel:
The stand-alone will document the Cylons' attempts -- those of two agents in particular -- to grapple with human survivors, both those aboard ships and those left alive on planets, shortly after the Cylons' destruction of human home worlds.
Three actors who play Cylons -- Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil), Michael Trucco (Sam Anders), Aaron Douglas (Galen Tyrol) – have signed on to the project, set to start shooting this month.
Earlier reports suggested Grace Park (Sharon Valerii Agathon), Michael Hogan (Saul Tigh) and Katee Sackhoff (Kara Thrace) were also being pursued for the project.
Find all of the Times’ story on the matter here.

Battlestar Galactica: Galactica's Final Season Won't All Be On TV
When Battlestar Galactica makes its long-awaited comeback next year, it won't just be our television screens that it's returning to. In a recent interview, executive producer David Eick revealed that fans can expect more The Resistance-style minisodes, as well.
Talking to Newsarama, Eick admitted that webisodes are definitely part of the plan for Battlestar's final season:Yes, we are doing webisodes but when they are premiering I am not positive. Like the webisodes we have done before, they will continue on the story threads that don’t make the cut. I don’t want to give too much away but they are going to follow the same paradigm as we’ve done before.
That paradigm would presumably be The Resistance, the 2006 online-only 10-part lead-in to Galactica's third season, and the Razor "flashbacks" that trailed last year's one-off movie. Does this mean that you'll only get the full story behind why this has all happened before and will all happen again if we tune in online?

Galactica Station - BSG Not Returning until April 2009?
Tuesday, September 2
Source: Cinema Blend
It looks like we could be waiting until April of 2009 for the rest of the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica to air. I don’t know why but this rumor doesn’t really surprise me. Perhaps it’s because SciFi kept us hanging for a year before they started airing the first half of the fourth season, so I guess I’m not getting my hopes up that we’ll get the rest of it in the earlier months of 2009.
Geeks of Doom reported the rumor, which came from BSG star Aaron Douglas at Dragon Con 2008. Douglas plays Chief Tyrol in the series and according to Geeks of Doom, complained a bit about SciFi ignoring their biggest hit. Douglas went on to say, Ten episodes is not a season, in reference to the first half of the fourth season that aired from April to June of this year.
This is just pure speculation here, but I'm going to disagree with Douglas. I don’t think the SciFi network is ignoring their most popular series so much as they are trying to keep the many fans of the show hanging on until they’re ready to roll out the prequel-spinoff series. Caprica will begin with a two-hour backdoor pilot set to air either towards the end of 2008 or early 2009, with the actual series airing sometime next year. I’m guessing that the network wants to combine the hype with the end of BSG with that of the new series in an attempt to bring as many BSG fans over to Caprica as possible. I can’t think of any other reason why the network would hold back the rest of the season when there are so many of us BSG geeks just itching to find out how it all ends.
As for the finale of BSG, Geeks of Doom reports that BSG Scientific Advisor Kevin Grazier says it’s a real tear jerker.

SciFi.com - SCI FI Wire - Battlestar Rumors Debunked
SCI FI Channel is calling "inaccurate" rumors that the second half of Battlestar Galactica's fourth and final season will be delayed and confirmed again that the original series will return with new episodes in January 2009.
Several Web sites, including io9 and Galactica Sitrep, have posted the rumors, reportedly based on comments made by Battlestar cast member Aaron Douglas at Dragon*Con.
The reports are erroneous, the channel confirmed to SCI FI Wire. "It is still slated to return January 2009," a spokesman for the channel said.

Galactica Station - Battlestar Galactica movie snares Tricia Helfer, Grace Park and lots more Cylons
Thursday, September 4
Source: The Watcher
First of all, Sci Fi batted down a rumor that emerged from a “Battlestar” panel at a convention over the weekend. The rumor was that the show’s last batch of episodes might not arrive until April 2009.
Not so. The target date for Season 4.5 is still January, the network told Sci Fi Wire. Pretty please -- let that date be set in stone. I am not sure I could wait four more months for the final batch of “Battlestar” goodness. It already feels as though January is an eternity away.Secondly, the second “Battlestar Galactica” TV movie begins shooting on Monday in Vancouver. When the existence of the movie was finally confirmed by Sci Fi a few weeks back, the network noted that Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama), Michael Trucco (Sam Anders), Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) and Dean Stockwell (Brother Cavil) would appear in it. Olmos is also directing the film, which is Cylon-centric .
But I got to wondering -- who else is in it? A source close to the production said we can also count on seeing a host of actors who play Cylons on the show: Tricia Helfer (No. 6), Grace Park (Boomer/Athena), Rick Worthy (Simon), Matthew Bennett (Doral) and Callum Keith Rennie (Leoben).
Helfer certainly has a full dance card: She’s playing a mysterious spy handler on “Burn Notice,” which returns with its last two summer episodes Sept. 11, and she also landed a role in a mid-season Fox pilot, “Inseparable.” (At left, Katee Sackhoff, Mary McDonnell, "Battlestar" executive producer Ron Moore and Helfer).
It’s a bit of a bummer to learn that Saul Tigh (Michael Hogan), perhaps the show’s most compelling Cylon, doesn’t have a big role in the new film, which will air some time after the show's season finale. My source says that Tigh and a fellow Cylon, Tory Foster (Rekha Sharma), are in the film, but “not as much." In convention footage posted at Galactica Sitrep, Olmos indicates that Chief Tyrol has a good-sized role in the film.
Ah well, I’ll just nurture a (probably futile) hope that one day there will be a third “Battlestar” movie, and that it’s Saul Tigh's Tigh-lon adventure. A girl can dream, right?

Ain't It Cool - AICN Tabletop: Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica: The Boardgame
I don’t have cable. Seriously. The last time I had cable I remember thinking “Hey, I wonder if that new Ari$$ show is any good?” So, no. I have never watched the new Battlestar Galactica. And yes, my friends have all told me how awesome it is. But if I can’t get it with rabbit ears it isn’t something I’m apt to see. Which is kind of where I find the time to write 2000 word columns on tabletop wargaming, not to mention the time to play them. So when I sat down to play Fantasy Flight Games new Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game for the first time, I had very little knowledge of the show – which is very much a part of the game (but fortunately not one required to enjoy it.)
The game was pretty highly anticipated in fan circles. When FFG dropped a number of these at Gencon earlier this year, they sold out immediately and their price (of the few people were willing to let go of) in online auctions shot upwards of $200 a piece. The game streets for $50. Well, this week it is finally out and it is pretty much a MUST for boardgame fans.BSG is a cooperative social strategy game. The premise of it is simple. You play a member of the crew of the Galactica as do all of your counterparts, and you must work together to solve crisis after crisis that befalls the ill fated ship. Your objective is to complete a number of jumps and reach your final destination before you run out of resources.
Trouble is, at least one of the players is secretly a cylon interloper who is secretly sabotaging skill checks and making decisions that could directly result in the loss of fuel, population food and water. But who’s the cylon? Who keeps blowing skill rolls? And did Harry just decide to avoid the skill check because he’s an idiot, or because he’s working for them? If the Galactica makes its final jump, the humans win. If they run out of resources beforehand – the Cylons do.
The result is a paranoid “He’s a cylon! No SHE is!” that feels like a cross between NUCLEAR WAR and, well, PARANOIA. Deals are made, kibitzing occurs and no one knows who to trust. And it’s a pretty damned good time. You can check out a basic video explaining the concepts and showcasing the game here.
If you’re a tabletop boardgame player and BSG fan, this should be pretty high on your list of things to get. This is also great for fans of cooperative play who delight in social manipulation and treacherous play. This one’s gonna get a lot of play here at the casa.
