TORN - MTV: John Noble won’t Reprise Role in Hobbit Films
August 27th, 2008
It has been well documented that Guillermo del Toro will approach the original The Lord of the Rings cast to reprise their roles in Middle-earth should the script call for it. News comes today from the MTV Movie Blog that one such actor, John Noble, won’t be available:“If they said, ‘Would you come and play Denethor again,’” Noble said, “I would have to say, ‘No, I’m doing [new J.J. Abrams television series] ‘Fringe’! And I certainly couldn’t play a younger Denethor or even Ecthelion now that I’m an older John. Not even with makeup.”

TORN - Brad Dourif on Returning to Middle-earth
September 12th, 2008
You can add Brad Dourif to the list of ‘LotR’ alumni who have expressed an interest in returning to Middle-earth. Brad was at DragonCon a couple of weeks ago, and was asked if he would reprise his role as Grima Wormtongue in the second ‘Hobbit’ (or “bridge”) film should the writers find a way to include the character. His response? “Of course!” Stay tuned to TheOneRing.net for more information!

TORN - Peter Lyon Confirmed Work on The Hobbit!
September 21st, 2008
Alex writes: I visited the Royal Armouries yesterday to see the “Arms and Armour from the Movies: The Wonderful World of Weta” exhibit and attended the fantastic lecture by the great Peter Lyon, Sword smith. Many people came along to hear his speech. He talked initially about his work on the Narnia films and how the process from concept drawings to the fully developed weapon was achieved.
He then went on to the weapons from Lord of the Rings and described in great detail the making of the ‘Shards of Narsil’ and ‘Sauron’s Mace’, and how difficult and time consuming they were to make! At the end he took questions from the audience, and I took the opportunity to ask him directly about ‘The Hobbit’. I asked if he had been approached to make the weapons for the new film and if so what was he looking forward to making the most!
This question drew a gasp and laughter from the audience and the Peter Lyons had a big smile on his face. He said “It would be a great shame if I were not asked not to make the weapons for the film as I did so many for The Lord of the Rings, but I am going back to Weta Workshop next year to work on a project, join the dotted lines…!” After he finished we got to hold the original ‘Sting’ used by Elijah Wood in the films, taken out of it’s glass case just for us, it was beautiful and very heavy, my wife touched the blade and got told off for nearly cutting herself!
TORN - Doug Jones On The Hobbit
September 19th, 2008
Our friends at AICN posted an interview with Doug Jones discussing a number of topics including his potential involvement in “The Hobbit.” As previous interviews suggest, it appears there is no decision yet on a specific role for him, but the interview reflects Guillermo Del Toro’s continued fondness for including Jones in his projects. Jones hints at a specific role and has some encouraging words for fans as well:“I’ve heard a lot about, well…there’s a specific role that sounds delicious! I don’t wanna say, I don’t know…that’s for Guillermo. The thing is as fans, keep talking! Because he listens to his fan base really a lot. If you have suggestions for what you want to see, he considers that. He’s very specific with what he wants, absolutely. But what you want from him and how he communicates with his fan base, keep talking, because he listens.”
You can catch the rest of the inteview with Doug Jones on AICN.

Spoiler TV - Guillermo del Toro Discusses The Hobbit
"I find you have to discipline yourself to write in the morning, and then watch and read in the afternoons stuff that seems relevant, even in a tangential way. For example, reading or watching World War I documentaries or books that I think inform 'The Hobbit,' strangely enough, because I believe it is a book born out of Tolkien's generation's experience with World War I and the disappointment of being in that field and seeing all those values kind of collapse. I think it's a turning point that you need to familiarize yourself with. I'm starting. Peter Jackson is such a fan of that historical moment and obsessive collector of World War I memorabilia, and he owns several genuine, life-size working reproductions of planes, tanks, cannons, ships! He has the perfect obsessive reproductions of uniforms of that time for armies of about 120 soldiers... each. I asked him which books he recommended… because I wouldn't be watching 'Krull' or 'The Dark Crystal,' I need to find my OWN way into the story. That's the same way I did 'Pan's Labyrinth' or 'Devil's Backbone,' by watching stuff you wouldn't think about."
"All my life I've been fascinated by dragons. I was born under the Chinese sign of The Dragon. All my life I'm collecting dragons. It's such a powerful symbol, and in the context of 'The Hobbit' it is used to cast its shadow through the entire narrative. Essentially, Smaug represents so many things: greed, pride… he's 'the Magnificent,' after all. The way his shadow is cast in the narrative you cannot then show it and have it be one thing, he has to be the embodiment of all those things. He's one of the few dragons that will have enormous scenes with lines. He has some of the most beautiful dialogues in those scenes! The design, I'm pretty sure that will be the last design we will sign off on, and the first design we have attempted. It is certainly a matter of turning every stone before figuring out what he looks like, because what he looks like will tell you what he is."
When pressed by a fan during the Q & A regarding the Wargs' appearance in The Hobbit, del Toro seemed like a child dying to spill the big secret he has but forcing himself to show restraint, joking that "Warner Brothers has a sniper right here in the theater.""There will be different sensibilities involved in this movie than there were in the original trilogy. First of all, because we have the travelogues in 'The Hobbit' which goes to places and variations on races that were not addressed in the trilogy. My belief on the 'Wargs' issue is that the classical incarnation of the demonic wolf in Nordic mythology is not a hyena-shaped creature. It is a wolf. The archetype is a wolf, so we're going to go back to the slender, archetypical wolf that is, I think, the inspiration for Tolkien. Listen… if we were having a drink two years from now I would spill the beans, because I'm a pretty easy guy about spilling the beans, but I can't in this instance I can't because it's three years from now... believe me, I am jumping up-and-down inside this fat body!"

/Film - Guillermo del Toro Tries To Explain The Hobbit Sequel
Wednesday, October 8th, 2008
I’m not sure about you, but I’m still so very confused about what exactly the Hobbit sequel is and is not. What is the purpose? What story will be told? Guillermo del Toro attempts to clarify matters by explaining to MTV that The Hobbit films aren’t actually two films, but one movie told in two parts.“The reality is that we stopped talking the first movie and second movie, and we just started taking about the movie - the two episodes, or two parts, as if they were a single piece of narrative,” said del Toro. “We don’t even call it the bridge movie, we just call it ‘The Movie.’ And this is great. When we found what reverberated, and we found it in one of our virtual meetings - we understood. It’s a movie.”
So the first film will tell the first half of The Hobbit, and the second film will tell the other half? Well.. No, not exactly. del Toro says that the second film will lead directly into The Fellowship of the Ring, and admits that even he doesn’t know when the book known as The Hobbit will end and the story bridging to the Lord of the Rings trilogy begins.“We are finding out,” GDT quipped. “I think Smaug dies in the first movie. So draw your own conclusions.”
And that death occurs in chapter 14 of the 19 chapter novel. So I’m more confused than ever. It appears that the second Hobbit film might contain the last five chapters of the book. Could it be that Jackson, del Toro and crew don’t have enough narrative story for the second film. Remember, the whole idea of a sequel was born out of studio greed (money) and not story necessity. Am I the only one who thinks that spreading the last chapters of The Hobbit into the next film could end messily?
EDIT:
TORN snappade upp detta.

Great news from the MTV Movie Blog today. We know that scripting has started on the Hobbit by the Fabulous Four - Jackson, del Toro, Walsh and Boyens, but news on the progress has been scarce. So its great to hear Guillermo give details of how things are coming along:“First thing is, sometimes we get all together in the same space or we all are in video conferencing. And those are sessions that can last two, three days,” del Toro said, opening up for the first time about the nuts-and-bolts aspect of the collaboration. “But after that, it’s almost like we take turns to a degree — or we each get big, big homework to do and then we come back. And then we exchange that homework and then we have input from that.“

TORN - Del Toro To Fly Solo In Directing The Hobbit
October 9th, 2008
During an interview posted on the MTV Movie Blog, Guillermo Del Toro was asked if he would be interested in Peter Jackson directing a scene in “The Hobbit” should the LOTR director have an opportunity to do so. Del Toro agrees that Jackson has certainly earned that right but added a clarification by saying:“We talked about it. I normally oppose fully the idea of second unit so my first instinct is no, we will not have second unit on this film,” Del Toro said of whether or not Jackson might at some point get behind the camera. “If there is a scheduling conflict or a problem of that sort, we may consider it, but right now the idea is I shoot everything.”
Nu väntar jag bara på att GDT anlitar Guillermo Navarro.

TORN - Guillermo Offers More Hobbit Detail!
October 14th, 2008
With just a few weeks left before he heads to New Zealand for several years del Toro checked in with MTV News to discuss his plans for “The Hobbit” and beyond, including news on Smaug, Doug Jones as the Elvin King, Guillermo Navarro, Elrond and more. On Smaug he noted:I discussed the Smaug appearance with great detail with [Tolkien illustrators] John Howe and Alan Lee, and there’s some illustrations that John did out of that meeting in London that approximate Smaug. I cannot say much more. He is becoming clearer and clearer.
Regarding approaching some of the actors, someone mentioned Hugo Weaving and he said:Oh yeah. We have to approach him — of course. Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen — they all must be approached to do the movie.
TORN - Del Toro: “What Bilbo Baggins Means To Me”
October 14th, 2008
As fans know, Bilbo Baggins is the clue finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. He was chosen for the lucky number. He comes from the end of a bag, but no bag goes over him. He is the Barrel-rider. Plus, we know that soon he’ll be the centerpiece of one of the biggest big-screen fantasy epics of all-time.
But what does he mean to Guillermo Del Toro? MTV's Movie Blog provided him an opportunity to discuss exactly that topic:“The most salient virtue of Bilbo is a very relatable, basic decency and honesty - the fact that here’s a guy who’s going to do the right thing,” Del Toro said of the titular character in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. “Bilbo is a good-hearted man, and the honesty of Bilbo is in direct contrast to the greed of Smaug, which looms large in the entire narrative, but also in the newly acquired greed and pride of Thorin, who becomes intoxicated with power and gold.”

Guillermo del Toro Gives Hobbit Update - ComingSoon.net
Source: Ryan Rotten
November 12, 2008
ComingSoon.net talked to director Guillermo del Toro about The Hobbit and its sequel last night at an event for the new Hellboy II: The Golden Army DVD.
He says they won't start the casting process until they've finished writing: "Literally, like every week, what you discover writing the two movies, writing the two stories, it changes. So, every week there's a discovery, and anything we say this week would be contradicted next week. Certainly that would be true in casting. Why create hopes or why create expectations if down the line you're going to go, 'You know what? That was not a good idea.'"
Regarding the creatures, he says there are so many more to be explored in "The Hobbit" films that were not explored in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. "We want to do a muscle-driven, radio-controlled suits for a couple of things. I already started that with Wink in 'Hellboy II.' Wink was pushed as far as we could within the time limits and the budget limits of the movie and we're going to take what we learned and apply it.
"Smaug is the creature in 'The Hobbit.' The way Tolkien wrote it, already, is magnificent. It's already a fantastic character. So, obviously, dragons, you ask every person what their best favorite dragon is, they will give you a different answer. In my mind, what we're going to attempt on the design of this creature and the creation of this creature needs to push the envelope beyond anything you've ever seen on that kind of creature.
"There is some stuff that has been done with dragons that I find... there are very few landmarks created for me. One of the best and one of the strongest landmarks that almost nobody can overcome is 'Dragonslayer.' The design of the Vermithrax Pejorative is perhaps one of the most perfect creature designs ever made. So, what you have to be careful is not to try to be distinctive just to be distinctive, but Smaug has certain characteristics that make him unique already. I am bursting at the seams about spilling the beans, but I won't because I would be shot."
Del Toro also talked more about two films he is producing--Adrien Brody/Sarah Polley starrer Splice and Juan Antonio Bayona's Hater--and you can read his quotes at ShockTillYouDrop.com!

"The Hobbit" to Begin Filming in 2010 at WorstPreviews™
BilboHobbit posted a transcript of an interview with director Guillermo Del Toro, who is getting ready to start filming "The Hobbit" and its sequel.
Del Toro first discussed the creatures in the upcoming two movies. "We will be pushing the goblin kingdom," he said. "We will be pushing smaug, the spiders of mirkwood. We will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and CGI into a seamless new art form in creating creatures."
He also added that filming will begin in 2010 and will go on for about 370 days. The first "Hobbit" movie is scheduled to appear in theaters in December, 2011, so Del Toro could end up with very little time to get it ready.
He was also asked about his top actor choices for Bilbo Baggins. Unfortunately, Del Toro is keeping that a secret. "Hopefully, very soon we can reveal that," he said.

Q:There any professionals who worked with you on Hellboy II that will be joining you on the Hobbit?
A:Hopefully Mignola, Barlowe, Spectral Motion, Guillermo Navarro and others…
Q:Do you think filming Hellboy II helped prepare you for filming the Hobbit?
A:Technically, yes- but that’s not the challenge in THE HOBBIT. The challenge is to create and expand a massive universe and be as immersive as the Trilogy was. To approach Tolkien’s book with the right mixture of reverence, enthusiasm and invention.
Q:Do you plan to use any particular effects or techniques in the Hobbit that were used in Hellboy II?
A:Well, yes, but used in a different way. You will see some mind-boggling mixture of CGI / Puppetry like never before. The demarcation of where one technique ends and the other begins will NOT be as clean as in HBII or BLADE II or PAN’S LABYRINTH. I am going to push further than ever on both fronts.
Q:At what age did you first read The Hobbit?
A:I believe it was between 10 years old and 11 years old. My first copy of it is dated as printed in 1973 and I know I bought it shortly after being published by a great publishing house called MINOTAURO which was (in my childhood years) like the CRITERION COLLECTION of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.
Q:How long did it take to create the script for this movie?
A:For the record- neither Peter Jackson nor I had the faintest contact about the HOBBIT movies prior to the absolute completion of HELLBOY II. I got Peter’s first call in December 2007- way after we wrapped the film. So, the visuals in the HOBBIT movie are not anticipated in the HBII movie.
Q:Will you be working with Guillermo Navarro on The Hobbit?
A:I hope so!!
Q:Does Mike Mignola have any involvement with you on The Hobbit?
A:I hope and pray he joins us at the design stage for a week or two.
Skulle vara riktigt fint om dom fick med Guillermo Navarro. Han kan man delvis tacka för att filmer som t.ex. Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy 1 & 2 och The Devil's Backbone ser så bra ut.

June 4th, 2008
IGN caught up with director Guillermo Del Toro this morning and tried to get a scoop on when we can expect a casting announcement for The Hobbit:
When asked if fan favourite James McAvoy had bagged the the Bilbo Baggins role, he replied:“Not yet. Not yet James McAvoy, not yet Jack Black, or Daniel Radcliffe. There's nothing to fear or celebrate yet“.
“In six months time we should know, he continued. “We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift.“

Empire: Movie News - Four Hobbits Back For The Hobbit?
Dominic Monaghan says they might be
Source: MTV
Well, here's a weird story. MTV spoke to Dominic Monaghan, former Hobbit in The Lord of the Rings, and he says that he and the other original quartet of Fellowship hobbits might be back for, well, The Hobbit.
Now without extensive rewriting, Merry (Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd), Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) do not at any point appear in The Hobbit - so we're guessing that, if they are indeed back, it'll be in the mooted second film, the bridge between the original story, wherein Bilbo travels with 13 dwarves to slay a dragon and steal its treasure, and the events of The Lord of the Rings. Given that Frodo, the eldest of the quartet, isn't born until some 27 years after the events of The Hobbit, even that interpretation involves some considerable narrative wriggling.
The story doesn't give any specifics, but you can read everything Monaghan has to say here, and let us know what you think below.

Kunde inte ha sagt det bättre själv.
Exaktumundo.

World Excl: Jackson/Del Toro Talk Hobbit
...
We spoke exclusively to both Del Toro and Jackson for our birthday issue, and they told us the latest, which is…
“We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur,” says Del Toro.
