IGN: From Time Lord to Hobbit?
David Tennant rumoured for Bilbo role.
by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK
UK, July 17, 2009 - Will Doctor Who star David Tennant be announced as the new Bilbo Baggins at Comic-Con next week?
The LA Times is spreading the rumours, citing the fact that David Tennant is over in San Diego to promote Doctor Who - a show he will shortly be leaving - as evidence that he will accept the part. Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro is also scheduled to be at the event.
The likes of Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy and even Jack Black have all been rumoured for the role.
Bilbob Baggins and David Tennant...
Do you guys reckon Tennant would make a good Bilbo?

»Not only did he confirm that he’ll be coming back as Gandalf, and is expecting to start work on set in March of next year, he also dropped a bit of a casting bombshell. According to McKellen, the starring role of Bilbo Baggins has been successfully cast already. Not only that, but he knows who has the role and he’s sure that the fans will be very, very pleased.« — [Källa]

...The precise terms of the settlement are confidential.
Inte så lustigt med det. Men man blir ju lite nyfiken på vad hela kalaset slutade på.
Warner Bros.’ President & Chief Operating Officer Alan Horn said: “We deeply value the contributions of the Tolkien novels to the success of our films and are pleased to have put this litigation behind us. We all look forward to a mutually productive and beneficial relationship in the future.”

"Also, if MGM goes through bankruptcy, that's a very expensive prospect (where only the lawyers get rich), and extremely disruptive (since who would do business with MGM in the interim) and won’t get the creditors what they want which is their money back. It's more than simply MGM losing Bond. The studio could lose a lot of other franchises." Källa
02/10/09 - Hobbit project faces another problem
..
The latest snag seems to be that MGM Studios, which is co-financing the movies with New Line, is running low on funds. According to Sci-Fi Wire, the studio needs $20 million in short-term cash flow to cover overhead, and an additional $150 million to get through the end of year and continue funding its current projects.
Hobbit money problems resolved. What's next? | SCI FI Wire
12:05 PM ON 10/02/09
Another hurdle to Guillermo del Toro's The Hobbit has fallen: MGM, one of the studios producing the movies, has reportedly come up with enough cash to move forward with the production, which was in jeopardy as late as last week.
According to The Hollywood Reporter:
A recent proposal by MGM's new CEO Steve Cooper to defer interest payments on its debt load for the next three months on Thursday won a crucial endorsement from J.P. Morgan.
The investment firm leads a lenders steering committee that has been agitating for a dramatic restructuring of the Lion's operations and its ownership structure. In exchange for an agreement to limited interest forbearance, J.P. Morgan secured a few changes in existing debt terms.
Concern over MGM's hold on Hobbit is at the heart of the activity. In a 50-50 rights partnership with Warner Bros.' New Line unit, two Hobbit pics are being developed.
The first Hobbit movie is eyeing a 2011 release date.

GDT smyger in sig själv i filmen.
John Rhys-Davies Says No To Hobbit Movie
30th October, 2009
John Rhys-Davies has ruled himself out of a return to Middle Earth. Although Gimli isnt in The Hobbit, his Father Gloin is and the good folk at Empire asked Rhys-Davies if he would be interested in a return.
Ive already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldnt. I have already completely ruled it out. Theres a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more.
It was just a gentle What would you feel about putting it on again? But no. Id be interested in trying to create a different type of persona within… the thing. That is challenging as an actor. Id really prefer to play something quite different. Maybe an Elf. Theyve got a different set of problems with The Hobbit because youve got 13 dwarves, a whole band of them… Youre trying to represent a whole race… Youre trying to do for dwarves what The Lord of the Rings did for hobbits.
While not being interested in the part of Gloin is no problem for The Hobbit movie, his rejection will cause problems for any attempt at the so called bridging movie which hopes to fill in the gap between the end of The Hobbit with the start of The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Hobbit Movie - Hobbit Movie Update
11th November, 2009
Guillermo Del Toro will be finding himself a part in The Hobbit movie. He confessed to a German TV show that he plans to have a cameo playing a creature and unlike Peter Jackson who did the same in all 3 Lord of the Rings movies, GDT will be giving himself a few lines to deliver.
Meanwhile Sir Ian McKellen - who is fast becoming THE source for Hobbit movie news - told Sci-Fi Wire that he has seen the script and although very excited he cannot say anything as he is sworn to secrecy. Sounds like GDT is catching on fast and reeling him in a bit :-)
There are a lot of characters in The Hobbit including, crucially, Bilbo, and they dont know whos going to play Bilbo. So its extremely attractive that this part has been written for me. The other Gandalf [LOTR] was written for, well, just as Gandalf.
[This contradicts his previous statement that he knew who had the bilbo Baggins role.]
Theres lots for me to enjoy, in all sorts of ways. And I couldnt be happier. But Im sworn to secrecy. Im not to say anything at all about the script.
Viggo Mortensen meanwhile has expressed an interest in returning for the second Hobbit movie.
He told Movieweb that he had a lot of fun making The Lord of the Rings movies and would love to return to Middle Earth. He also told them that it is his understanding that they [GDT, Jackson and Co] were trying to incorporate actors from the trilogy, even some whos character didnt appear in The Hobbit.
John Rhys-Davies only last month said he had been approached but had said no thanks to a return to Middle Earth as has Christopher Lee.
John Noble who played Denethor has already said no some time ago which could be a problem if they plan to show the story of Aragorn.
Brian Cox To Play Thorin?
Published on: 15th November, 2009
Rumors are spreading that Brian Cox is a front runner for one of the leading Dwarf parts in The Hobbit movie.
It seems to have started with gossip hunter Latauro who reports for Aintitcool.com
While the claim comes with a warning that sources arent sure if Cox is either already signed up or is simply wanted by GDT, Jackson and company, it would be a logical piece of casting.
In The Lord of the Rings Jackson had John Rhys-Davies play Gimli with the accent of a Scotsman so Cox certainly fits the part. Hes also IMHO a brilliant actor and would be perfect for the part of either Thorin or Balin.
With the script reportedly now finished, casting should be the next step so rumors will be flying around but we should soon be getting some official news over the next few months and Im hoping this rumor proves to be true.
While not being interested in the part of Gloin is no problem for The Hobbit movie, his rejection will cause problems for any attempt at the so called bridging movie which hopes to fill in the gap between the end of The Hobbit with the start of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Guillermo Del Toro On Making The Hobbit

Den första är detta.
inthenews.co.uk - Jackson happy to hand over Hobbit reins
Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson has confirmed the first script for the two films based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit has been completed.
Pan's Labyrinth helmer Guillermo del Toro is to bring the novel to the screen while Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will co-write and produce the films, having won 17 Oscars for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the premiere of his new film The Lovely Bones, Jackson revealed the first of the two scripts had already been completed and handed to a grateful studio.
"The Hobbit will be two movies and we've written the first script and delivered it to the studio who seem to be happy with it," the New Zealander told reporters.
"We're now halfway through the second script and Philippa, Fran, Guillermo and myself are doing the scripts and having great fun."
He continued: "It was an interesting experience because eight or nine years have passed since we wrote the Lord of the Rings screenplays and I was worried it'd be weird or hard or uncomfortable to go back there, but as soon as we started writing the scripts it was fun, actually, and easy."
Having won a best director award for The Return of the King in 2003, Jackson could be expected to feel reluctant to hand over the reins to envisioning Middle Earth to another director.
But the 48-year-old stressed he is "happy" Del Toro is making the two films based on Tolkien's 1937 novel.
"It's our job to support him and to help him tell the story - and my favourite part of the process of filmmaking is the screenplay. That's the part that's the least pressured and most creative and it's fun."
