The Dark Knight Passes $500 Million Domestically

While we await the four-day holiday weekend estimates on Monday, Warner Bros. Pictures revealed that The Dark Knight became only the second movie in Hollywood history to surpass the $500 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday, bringing its total to $502.4 million. Titanic, the biggest blockbuster, remains in first on the domestic chart with $600.8 million.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said he expects The Dark Knight to finish at about $530 million, though it could reach $550 million if business persists as strongly as it has.

The Christopher Nolan-directed sequel earned an estimated $19 million internationally from 62 markets this weekend. It has reached an international total of $416.7 million and $919.1 million worldwide, the 10th highest of all-time.

Nope, där verkar inte några liknande utgåvor vara på G. Vilket är bra lustigt egentligen. Man kunde ju kanske ha gjort något liknande på samma tema med ansiktet av Hulk/Abomination eller kanske en stor grön näve. Vad vet jag.

Warner Bros. Plans Dark Knight Rerelease

Warner Bros. Pictures plans to rerelease blockbuster The Dark Knight in January, the height of Academy Awards voting season, says The Hollywood Reporter.

"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," a source told the trade.

Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with IMAX executives about the prospect of restoring the film to some number of giant-screen venues in January. It's uncertain if The Dark Knight also will reappear in conventional theaters at that point.

To date, the film has earned about $513 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in IMAX grosses. The DVD and Blu-ray Disc are expected to hit stores in December.

/Film - Dark Knight Blu-Ray Details?

Blu-Ray.Com claims to have discovered new information about The Dark Knight’s two-disc blu-ray release.

The first disc will include the movie and Gotham Discovered: The Creation of a Scene featurette.

The second disc will include the following documentaries: “Batman Technology: Gadgets and Tools” (in HD), “Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of the Dark Knight” and “The World of Batman Seen Through Real Life Psychotherapy” (in HD), 6 clips from the Gotham Cable Premier’s newscast: “Tonight in Gotham”, plus art galleries on the Joker’s letters, conceptual art, posters, production stills, trailers, and TV spots.

No word on if Nolan provided a commentary track (doubtful) or if the IMAX formatted footage will be included as a viewing option on the feature presentation.

Har ju redan sett två av de där dokumentärerna, har inte sett "“The World of Batman Seen Through Real Life Psychotherapy” men de andra två på youtube under TDKs största hype. Hoppas att det är samma grejer på vanliga DVD utgåvan också. Har ingen Blueray spelare än, och kommer inte skaffa någon innan jag har råd med en schysst HD TV. Christopher Nolan brukar ju aldrig göra någon commentary track (undantaget är väl specialutgåvan av Memento) men det skulle vara kul om t ex Jonathan Nolan och David Goyer skulle göra ett.

Det mesta brukar ju vara samma både på DVD som det är på Blu-ray. Skulle tro att det är samma sak med TDK. Kanske att man får något litet extra som en "bonus" om man köper filmen på Blu-ray men annars skulle jag gissa på liknande utgåvor oavsett formatet man väljer.

Turkish Province Wasn't Asked Permission

Batman, the small subdistrict of Ankara, Turkey announced on Wednesday their attention to sue Warner Bros. for its Batman movie franchise. According to the story at India’s Top News, Batman mayor Huseyin Kalkan feels permission should have been obtained prior to filming. The very first filmed Batman was the 1943 serial with the first full-length feature being the 1966 movie with the television cast. More recently, The Dark Knight amassed $992,764,009 in global box office receipts according to Box Office Mojo.

Batman became a distinct subdistrict in 1937, two years before the character’s debut in Detective Comics #27. The name comes from the Batman River and as it prospered it first became a town of Siirt in 1957, and in 1990 was made its own province.

"There is only one Batman in this world," said Kalkan. "Without telling us, the US makers of the films have taken the name of our region."

The mayor confirmed for the press that he would file suit in the United States if it came to that.

Warner Home Video's The Dark Knight is expected to ship more than 1 million Blu-ray Disc units to retail for its Dec. 9 street date, which is believed to be a first for the format.

Video Business says earlier in the quarter, Paramount Home Entertainment said its Iron Man sold 500,000 Blu-ray copies in its first week on shelves, but it's unclear how many units the studio shipped.

For much of the past year, Blu-ray copies averaged 5% to 10% of a title's sales. Recent features, including Warner's Speed Racer and Journey to the Center of the Earth reached more than 10%, and Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Incredible Hulk hit more than 14%.

Iron Man's Blu-ray version represented as much as 30% of sales at some retailers, though overall it was closer to 10%.

Batman Money Supporting Terrorism - More About The Litigious Turkish Mayor
This is the reason why we must have tort reform. I'm sure you've heard the laughable story being reported about the Mayor of Batman, Turkey who is suing Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros for using the town's name. Well, there is more to it than that my dear reader, and it's not funny anymore. Turns out that this guy has gotten money from DC comic before, and used it to advance terrorism...
For those who have been under a rock. Here is the breakdown...

The mayor of a city in southeastern Turkey, which has the same name as the Caped Crusader, is suing helmer Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. for royalties from mega-grosser "The Dark Knight."

Huseyin Kalkan, the mayor of Batman, has accused "The Dark Knight" producers of using the city's name without permission.

Obviously, this is a litigious dumbass trying to earn a buck, right? I mean, this can't possibly be considered a legitimate arguement. After all, the city itself wasn't called "Batman" until 1955, and no one has explained why it took so many years to take legal action. Batman first appeared as a comicbook character in 1939 and the "Batman" TV series started in 1966. Tim Burton's first bigscreen rendition for Warner Bros. came out in 1989. Undoubtedly the fact that "Dark Knight" is about to pass the $1 billion mark at the B.O. played a big part in giving this Turkish asshole the idea, right?

Anyway, it turns out that the guy has done this before--and was paid off by DC Comics! Now we don't have to wonder where he got the idea. This is from Wikipedia...

"He first gained international notoriety after it was revealed that he had filed a lawsuit against DC Comics for using his city's name in their Batman Comic book franchise. In 2007, DC Comics confirmed that they had settled with the city for an undisclosed amount. In February 2008 the mayor was sentenced to 10 months in jail for promoting terrorism. Prosecutors speculated that Kalkan may have used money from his settlement with DC Comics to fund terrorism."

How come nobody is reporting this? I want to know why a dude outside of the country can even bring a lawsuit of this kind at all. Does the word/name of "Batman" mean anything in the Turkish language? And is it spelled and pronounced the same way in a foreign country?

Can you believe that bullcrap?!! Especially since it is their own screwed up culture that is REALLY to blame for that kind of stuff with their "honor killings," which is just plain evil. But that's exactly what the bad guys do. They blame others for their problems.

Finally, clip No 3 centres on Ledger's Joker. Nolan talks about creating a "purposeless criminal, the enemy who has no rules, is not out for anything and cannot be understood". Bale discusses why he believes the Joker is such an impossible opponent to face. "He enjoys highlighting man's hypocrisy and making people question their values and how sincere they are," he says.

It's been disqualified by the Academy

Well, now this sucks – The Dark Knight’s score, which to Empire’s ears is one of the best, if not the best, of the year, has been disqualified from consideration for next year’s Academy Awards.

The executive committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science’s music branch made the decision after failing to be suitably satisfied that the score’s composers, James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer, were directly responsible for more than 70% of the music.

That’s because – in a show of generosity and solidarity – Zimmer and Howard, who collaborated on the Batman Begins soundtrack, listed three other people as composers on the official cue sheet, the document that specifies every piece of music in the film.

The other three were music editor Alex Gibson, ambient music designer Mel Wesson and composer Lorne Balfe, who were added to the cue sheet primarily, according to Zimmer, to qualify them for royalties.

Despite the fact, though, that the trio reportedly signed an affidavit stating that the score was primarily the work of Howard and Zimmer, the majority of the committee voted that the score should be disqualified.

In a way, we shouldn’t be too surprised – after all, the same issue befell Batman Begins three years ago. But we should be dismayed that such a wonderful score, with its cutting-edge sound design and an instantly iconic Joker cue, won’t be recognised.

To be fair, the debate took up a fair chunk of the music committee’s time, with some members arguing that the score should be included, so hats off to them. And, with the practice of multiple composers on the rise, we’re sure that at some point the rules will change.

For the time being, though, both Howard and Zimmer can console themselves with the knowledge that they’ve written two of the most iconic TV theme tunes of all time – ER for Howard, and Going For Gold for Zimmer.
