Spoiler TV - X Men Origins: Magneto to Begin Production Next Year?

X-Men Origins: Magneto first got the green light last April and at one point was scheduled to begin filming in January, however the writers strike got in the way and there haven’t been any developments this year at all…that we know of anyway.

IGN caught up with The Dark Knight writer David Goyer at Comic-Con, who wrote the screenplay and has been attached to direct Magneto for a while.

“Magneto seems to be a movie that Fox still wants to make. They called me about it a couple of weeks ago, and I’m still working on Unborn through November, and so we said, when I finish Unborn, we’ll talk, and maybe we’ll get that going next year.”

Fox may be aiming to get Magneto out in 2010, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine will be out next May. Ian McKellen recently said he would be interested in returning for ‘topping and tailing the story’ as the script requires a younger Magneto who is coming to grips with his metal manipulating powers as he and his parents try to survive in Auschwitz. He then meets Professor Xavier and starts hunting down and killing Nazi war criminals.

Here is the official synopsis for X-Men Origins: Magneto, as listed by subscription trade mag Production Weekly.

"The original X-Men film began with a prologue that showed the character as a child being led to a concentration camp by Nazis and that is the period in which the Magneto film will take place. This setup will allow a future villain to at least flirt with the designation of protagonist since the character will be seen almost exclusively in his formative years."

"The storyline will heavily involve Professor X, the wheelchair-using X-Men leader. That character was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps. The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realisation that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies."

X-Men Origins: Wolverine may be just a few months away from slashing its way into cinemas, but it’s taken a while for concrete developments to take place on the other X-Men prequel, X-Men Origins: Magneto, which was announced around the same time as the Hugh Jackman starrer.

However, we spoke to its producer, the doyenne of the X-films, Lauren Shuler Donner, recently, and she confirmed that it’s still in the works. “I think first we wanted to make Wolverine, and then David [Goyer, the attached director] took another film, and there wasn’t a lot of time,” she said. “But I’d like to make that – we’ll have to see.”

Details of the plot have remained vague thus far, but Shuler Donner was happy to tell us shed a little light on things. “We have a script on Magneto which is actually sort of Magneto and Charles Xavier,” she said. “It’s Erik and Charles in their early, early years.”

And, as if to further confirm that, the industry bible Production Weekly has added a synopsis for the Fox film, which suggests that Xavier “was a soldier in the allied force that liberated the concentration camps” in which Magneto is interred at the beginning of Bryan Singer’s X-Men.

Sounds intriguing. The relationship between Xavier and Lehnsherr is one of the most successful elements of all three X-movies and, even though Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen won’t be playing the young ‘uns, we’re still hugely excited by a movie detailing their early relationship. Fingers crossed that Fox puts this on a fast track, but we suspect that Magneto’s fate will be determined by the extent of Wolverine’s success.

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Indie London that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is “very good. I’m very pleased with it. It’s very much an origins story. It’s very much in the tone of the first X-Men.”

As for the next Origins project, she said, “We have a great script on Magneto. I’ll tell you the honest truth… I’ve made four movies this year and I was so busy that I didn’t at all talk to the studio while making Magneto because I couldn’t have done it. And David Goyer, who wrote and is going to direct it, also did another movie. So now, he’s done with his and I’m done with two of mine, so when I get back that’s my first order of business to say: ‘Come on, let’s go and make Magneto'.”

20th Century Fox has put a hold on the X-Men spin-off "X-Men Origins: Magneto" until they have seen success with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" --so says David S. Goyer.

They report that Fox likes the script, but the success of Wolverine will be a big part of their decision to continue with the project.

"I don’t think they would consider moving forward until the movie comes out," said Goyer.

The official plot synopsis for “X-Men Origins: Magneto,” starts shortly after the flashback from the first X-Men movie with a young Eric Lensherr (Magneto) in a WWII concentration camp. The film explores Eric's awakening to his powers, and the friendship that develops between Charles Xavier (Professor X)--as well as their ultimate parting of ways.

"David Goyer has written a brilliant script. It starts in the concentration camps and has Magneto coming out of there. But you know, I'm not sure that film is going to be made. The studio has a wealth of potential stories, and they have to stand back and decide which ones to make. And Magneto, I think, is at the back of the queue. Maybe it'll get made in five years - who knows? I can tell you that Ian McKellen won't be playing the character the whole way through. We used Lola technology in X-Men 3 to de-age Ian and Patrick for one scene, but it's very expensive. To do that for a two-hour movie would be prohibitive financially. And to find a younger actor to fill Ian's shoes, that's pretty daunting. It's not easy."
