SciFi Exec: 'Battlestar Galactica' Will Get Renewed
As fans gear up for the return of "Battlestar Galactica" Sunday night, they have received even more assurances that the adventures of the Colonial ship and its ragtag fleet will continue at least for another season.
David Howe, executive vice president of SciFi Channel, which produces and airs the 1970s series remake, told iFMagazine that the reason why the fate of "Battlestar Galactica" hasn't been announced yet is because the network is on a time schedule for such decisions, and they usually wait until the deadline to announce it. But either way, he would be "shocked" if the show as not picked up for a fourth season.
"Here's how it works in TV. A lot of people have said to me that it appears to be some indecision as to whether 'Battlestar Galactica' comes back or not. Absolutely not," Cohen told the magazine. "The way it works is you have a pickup date by which you have to make a decision about picking up shows for the next season, and you don't need to make the decision until that date, so we don't make the decision until that date. Do I think 'Battlestar' will come back? I'm pretty certain 'Battlestar' will come back."
As been previously reported through sources and such, the network is pleased with how well BSG has held up against broadcast network competition, Cohen said, and the network believes that its move to Sunday to join new series "The Dresden Files" will serve more of a way to attract a new audience rather than desperately try to hold on to enough people to allow a renewal.
"I'm optimistic, and I would be shocked if we did not renew 'Battlestar Galactica,'" Cohen said.
The proposed spinoff to "Battlestar Galactica," however, "Caprica," remains in development hell, but a final decision on whether that show will get a green light won't come at least until spring, meaning any development would be pushed off until 2008.
"We had a pilot meeting about a month back which was inconclusive," Cohen said. "In about a month's time or so, we'll sit down and take a look at what we have in development, and 'Caprica' is in that."
Cohen's comments are in line with a previous report by SyFy Portal that talked about SciFi Channel planning for a fourth season of "Battlestar Galactica," while work on "Caprica" seems to be on hold, at least from a network standpoint.
"Battlestar Galactica" returns for the second half of Season 3 Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on SciFi Channel.

SCI FI Wire | The News Service of the SCI FI Channel
SCI FI Channel announced that it has renewed its Peabody-winning original series Battlestar Galactica, ordering 13 new episodes. Production will resume this summer in Vancouver, Canada, with an eye toward a January 2008 premiere.
The decision comes after the series' successful move to a new 10 p.m. timeslot on Sundays. Since moving, Battlestar Galactica's audience has grown over its third-season average by 8 percent in total viewers, by double digits in female viewers, by 19 percent in the show's target demographic of adults aged 18-49 and by 14 percent in adults 25-54. The Jan. 28 episode, "Taking a Break From All Your Worries," delivered 2.5 million total viewers and 1.6 million adults 18-49, the largest audience for any episode since the season-two premiere.
"We're thrilled to bring Battlestar back for another season," Mark Stern, SCI FI's executive vice president of programming, said in a statement. "This series has delivered on every level, from the writing to the acting to the production values. SCI FI is proud to be the home of the best show on television."
The series is from NBC Universal Television Studio and is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick. Its cast is led by Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer and Grace Park. Battlestar recently returned with the second half of its third original season, immediately following SCI FI's newest original series, The Dresden Files.
"While we never had any doubt that SCI FI would get behind a fourth season of Battlestar, it's thrilling to finally make it official, and for Ron and I to continue using this great genre to investigate the darker corners of society, politics and humanity," executive producer David Eick said in a statement.

Åter igen så är det inte bekräftade uppgifter, men det finns ju en teoretisk tidsram gå efter.Sci Fi Renews
(Broadcasting & Cable) _ Sci Fi Channel renewed Battlestar Galactica for a fourth season, the network said Tuesday. Production on at least 13 new hour-long episodes will begin this summer, working toward a premiere in January 2008.
Separately, NBC Universal will likely create a direct-to-video Battlestar movie which will come out in between seasons three and four, according to sources with knowledge of the matter. The film would fill in plot gaps and give information not previously unveiled in the TV show.
The decision comes after Sci Fi moved Battlestar, currently in its third season, from Friday to Sunday nights. The show's fans had a scare when it premiered to lackluster ratings (1.8 million total viewers, according to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen Media Research) on the new night Jan. 21.
But that was against football on CBS, which drew 50 million, and Battlestar rebounded in subsequent weeks. Week two grew to 2.1 million viewers - 2.5 million accounting for playback on DVRs within the week. The Feb. 11 episode drew 1.5 million viewers (live-plus-same-day).

Question: Granted, I'm happy that Battlestar Galactica is continuing for a fourth season, but why only 13 episodes?— Girard Ruddick
Ausiello: The exact number of episodes is apparently in flux. "It has not been decided whether it will be 13 episodes or 22," BSG producer David Weddle told SyFy Portal. "We should have a decision on that soon." That would explain why Sci Fi, in its official pickup announcement, said BSG had been renewed for a "minimum" of 13 episodes.

Ausiello: In light of the renewal, is it safe to assume that the BSG movie is a go?
Eick: It's green light was predicated on this fourth season order, so that means we're making it. They're calling it a "bonus episode." It'll come between the end of Season 3 and the beginning of Season 4.
