Rose McGowan is Still Barbarella
Last August it was revealed that Rose McGowan was set to star in Robert Rodriguez's Barbarella remake at Universal Pictures. But then rumors began over budget issues and that the studio didn't want McGowan in the role.
Wrong, she tells MTV. "[The news that I was out] was really irritating because I know all the people over there and obviously it wasn't true. It was very malicious and there was no proof. Oftentimes these things have basis in truth but this didn't. I have contracts to prove it."
She added that half of the sets have been built and the costumes are done. She's "even got my spaceships. I've got part of a spaceship built for me!"
The hold up at the moment? The possible Screen Actors Guild strike in June.

IESB.net - Movie News, Reviews, Interviews and More! - McGowan and Rodriquez Split - Where does that leave Barbarella?
Written by Stephanie Sanchez
Wednesday, 02 July 2008
I am not one to delve into the "gossip" side of movie news, however, the recent split between actress (if you can call her that) Rose McGowan and director Robert Rodriguez has further implications than simply trashy Page Six news.
The New York Post said "...the couple, who we reported last October were engaged, have split, partly over the problems Rodriguez had finding financing for "Barbarella" - the 1968 cult classic in which Jane Fonda played a sexy space adventuress - with McGowan in the title role."
First, I find this hilarious. After leaving his wife of 16 years and their five kids for this "appendage missing gun toting can't act for shit" McGowan.
Then, she leaves him because he can't get financing for a film he wants her to star in...that's just gold.
The article continues, "Instead, the moguls were saying, 'We need a bigger star, a bigger name.' " Jessica Alba has been touted as a possible replacement."
HELLO? Jessica Alba? Oh that's almost just as bad... ok not as bad...but pretty bad. Can't anyone come up with anyone better than these two?! Is Hollywood that short on talented actresses?!
Well, at least RED SONJA has been saved, good god if McGowan had actually shot that film?! A disaster in the making.
So I guess Rodriguez' next move is to hold a casting couch...where he'll find his next off-screen love interest and on-screen starlet.

Apparently, Hollywood (and all watching) cheered too soon -- a representative for Rose McGowan has hit back at the reports that she has split with Robert Rodriguez, or scrapped their movies. McGowan's rep told People Magazine that "the production of all three films is moving forward with Rose to star." And one of those mysterious sources "close" to the actress insisted their relationship was fine. (Källa)

Robert Rodriguez Explains Why His Barbarella is Officially Dead
Rodriguez explains: "It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie… But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, 'God, I don't know if we can do that. I don't know if I can be away that long.'" So that was that? "It was a real bummer," he says. "We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy—almost like that [1981 animated] movie, Heavy Metal—version of a Star Wars movie."

'Barbarella' Remake Cancelled at Hollywood.com
Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has abandoned his remake of Jane Fonda's Barbarella -- because the father of five couldn't bear the thought of shooting the film in Germany.
The Planet Terror director planned to make the action film with girlfriend Rose McGowan as the lead, but couldn't raise finances to make the movie in America.
And he hated the idea of spending so much time abroad, away from his children.
He tells MTV, "Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie. But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany.
"Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, 'God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.'
"It was a real bummer. We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy version of a Star Wars movie... It was gonna be really great."

Empire: Movie News - New Barbarella Gets a Screenwriter
Joe Gazzam will write it for Luketic
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Director Robert Luketic has hired writer Joe Gazzam to plot out a new version of Barbarella, the story of the space-age sex-kitten that originally starred Bridget Fonda. We can only assume that his mandate reads: "Keep the Zero-G striptease; lose the silly camp bits."
The original film, from 1968, saw highly-sexed spacegirl Barbarella tasked with saving the galaxy 40,000 years from now from the evil Durand Durand. She travels to the planet Lythion, meets some people, loses some clothing, meets some other strange people, loses some more clothing, and in the city of Sogo ("where a new sin is invented every hour") has to face off against the evil scientist. Where she loses some more clothing. It's that sort of film.
For the remake, the plan is to keep the adventure, the sexual seductions and, we're betting, the figure-revealing threw-it-on-and-nearly-missed outfits, but lose the air of high camp that so marked the original.
Gazzam, a relative newcomer as feature screenwriters go, previously wrote CryptoZoo, Riot for John Carpenter and a movie version of 21 Jump Street. He'll be working with The Ugly Truth director Luketic and producer Dino De Laurentiis, who also produced the original film, before they shop it around to studios to get backing for the film.
