How smart is Vin Diesel in Babylon A.D., the dystopian thriller about genetic engineering and religion and the evils of science? He might just be smart enough to outthink a smart missile. This clip which IGN posted is most notable for reminding everyone that Michelle Yeoh is actually in this movie along with Vin. Babylon A.D., about Diesel's mercenary character teaming up with Yeoh's killer nun to transport a special girl (Melanie Thierry) across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, opens on Friday.

Babylon A.D. hits theaters this coming weekend, August 29th, but apparently it's not going to be the movie that even its director, Mathieu Kassovitz, wanted it to be. In a rather eye-opening interview with AMC, Kassovitz opens up about the problems he had with Fox and the troubles with the film. If you're one of those people who thought it wouldn't be a problem if Fox ended up getting the distribution rights to Watchmen, just wait until you read about the things they did to Kassovitz and the situation they've left him in - I think you'll change your mind. This is truly a tragic story to hear and unfortunately it's too late to do anything anyway. "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience."

Kassovitz starts off this tragic tale by explaining that "the scope of the original book [that this is based on] was quite amazing." But unfortunately the result is not the same. "It's pure violence and stupidity," Kassovitz says. And that's not a good thing that he's describing. "The movie is supposed to teach us that the education of our children will mean the future of our planet. All the action scenes had a goal: They were supposed to be driven by either a metaphysical point of view or experience for the characters… instead parts of the movie are like a bad episode of 24." If a director is saying that about his own movie, you definitely know something went wrong, very wrong. Kassovitz—best known for directing 1995’s Hate before shipping off to Hollywood to make Gothika—compares many of Babylon’s scenes to a “bad episode of 24.” He also feels the “stupidity and violence” takes away from the film’s underlying each-one-teach-one message about the future. So, how does Sunny Vin D feel about it?

“Am I even in the movie any more, or am I on the cutting room floor?” the actor joked.

In just the last couple of days, I have heard numerous directors and lots of fans complain about 20th Century Fox and the way they deal with some of their upcoming movies.

Then there was "Babylon AD." Director Mathieu Kassovits revealed that 20th Century Fox kept sending their lawyers who made everything difficult. In the end, "Babylon AD," which is based on a French novel "Babylon Babies" by Maurice Georges Dantec, fails to deliver the book's messages. "It's pure violence and stupidity," he admits. Jag tycker att filmen är riktigt bra och en klar överraskning. Handlingen är det som är den bästa biten med filmen, en mycket intressant framtidsskildring i mörka och skitiga östeuropeiska miljöer. Handlingen flyttar mot slutet av filmen till New York och då tappar den något, dock inte så mycket att filmen blir dålig på något sätt.

Skådespelarna gör bra insatser, till och med Vin Diesel som jag normalt inte tycker tillför filmerna han är med i så mycket. Övriga roller spelas av den smått legendariska Michelle Yeoh som jag har sett i många filmer från Hong Kong tidigare. I rollen som Aurora dyker en viss Mélanie Thierry upp och jag kan inte dra mig till minnes att jag har sett henne i någon annan film tidigare. Men hon gör sin karaktär mycket bra. På ett litet hörn dyker även både Gérard Depardieu och Charlotte Rampling upp. Även om dom båda två spelar över något i sina respektive roller så är det kul att se dom i en seriös film för en gång skull.

Regissören Mathieu Kassovitz har öppet gett filmbolaget massiv kritik för att dom, enligt honom, har förstört hans film. Det finns dessutom flera andra versioner av filmen att få tag på och det skulle vara kul att se även dom någon gång om man skulle få chansen till det. Dock kan jag inte riktigt förstå kritiken som förs fram, då jag tycker att filmen är riktigt bra i den version som jag har sett den i. Det kanske är svårt att sätta sig in i kritiken då man inte har arbetat med filmen själv men jag har försökt vända och vrida på den kritik jag har läst och jag kan helt enkelt inte få ihop det ordentligt. Mathieu Kassovitz borde snarare vara mer än nöjd med den filmen han har gjort, jag är så passa taget av den att jag planerar att se om den snart igen samt även försöka läsa romanen som filmen bygger på. Så jag kan inte göra annat än att rekommendera den här filmen.
