Utan att ha sett mer än Corlaine så hoppas jag att Ponyo blir nominerad och dessutom vinner och att Hayao Miyazaki finns på plats för att ta emot priset. Då lär jag svimma av lycka. Känns dock som en tuff tävling i år, många filmer som känns intressant och bra och som fått ett varmt mottagande.

LOS ANGELES - Without the burden of a live worldwide broadcast, members of the film academy threw themselves a lively yet relaxed dinner party to honor the first Oscar winners of the season.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences broke with tradition and presented its honorary Oscars off-camera Saturday night, months ahead of the televised ceremony in March.

Actress Lauren Bacall, B-movie king Roger Corman and "Godfather" cinematographer Gordon Willis each received Oscar statuettes during the black-tie banquet at the Grand Ballroom above the Kodak Theatre, the same room where the annual post-Academy Awards Governors Ball is held.

In addition, producer John Calley was honored with the Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Award, recognizing career accomplishments that include "Catch-22," "The Remains of the Day" and "The Da Vinci Code."

Each of the recipients was chosen by the academy's Board of Governors.

Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Annette Bening, Morgan Freeman and Steven Spielberg were among the 600 invited guests at the inaugural Governors Awards event.

"We're gathered here together, all artists, celebrating excellence without any television cameras — isn't it great?" said veteran producer Norman Jewison.

Warren Beatty agreed: "It's so much better ... that nobody's worrying whether 36.5 million people are watching us or 29.2," he said.

Guests drank Champagne and dined on filet mignon as each honoree was celebrated with tributes, toasts and a generous montage of film clips — leisurely elements not possible in previous years when special-Oscar presentations were built into the already-crowded Oscar broadcast.

Corman, 83, was the first to be honored Saturday night. The longtime producer-director was lauded for being a champion of independent and efficient filmmaking and for promoting women to positions of leadership long before it was popular.

Quentin Tarantino said the man behind films such as "Bloody Mama" and "X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes," inspired him to become a filmmaker. He praised Corman for his "undeniable impact on the industry, both as a business and as an art form."

"The movie lovers of planet earth thank you," Tarantino said.

Ron Howard credited Corman with giving him his start as a filmmaker, saying working for Corman was "a badge of honor."

Corman's advice to his peers? "Keep gambling. Keep taking chances."

Kirk Douglas honored Bacall, his friend for more than 60 years, and confessed that he once tried to seduce her — "without success."

Anjelica Huston presented the award to the legendary actress, saying she "defines what it means to be a great actress and also a huge movie star" and praising her "steadfastness, honesty and extraordinary beauty."

Ever feisty, the 85-year-old actress shooed away an escort who tried to help her to the podium to accept her Oscar.

She spoke of her late husband, "my great love" Humphrey Bogart, and her dashing leading men: Douglas, Gregory Peck and Henry Fonda.

Bacall said she did not expect to receive an Oscar but gratefully welcomed the honor.

"The thought when I get home that I'm going to have a two-legged man in my room is so exciting," she quipped.

Willis, whose cinematography credits include "The Godfather," "Annie Hall" and "All the President's Men," was honored for his decades of work. He was nominated for an Oscar twice: For "Zelig" in 1983 and "The Godfather: Part III" in 1990.

Presenter Jeff Bridges noted Willis' "unsurpassed mastery of light, shadow, color and motion."

Willis, 78, told his industry peers, "Do your best. Take care of your kids."

Heath concerns kept Calley from accepting his award in person, so seven previous Thalberg Award winners did it for him, including Spielberg, Jewison, Beatty and George Lucas. They lauded Calley for his willingness to support creativity throughout his career.

"Please know how proud all of us are to welcome you to our ranks," Spielberg said.

Though not televised, the Governors Awards were taped and portions will be shown during the 82nd annual Academy Awards on March 7, 2010.

Where the Wild Things Are

Spike Jonze’s free-form adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s kids classic could lure adventurous Oscar voters in the script and helming categories, but the pic is more likely destined for art direction and music noms.

The Young Victoria

With Oscar winners such as scribe Julian Fellowes and producers Martin Scorsese and Graham King behind it, the story of Britain’s Queen Victoria (Emily Blunt) and Prince Albert (Rupert Friend) could court kudos.

Tarantino, Almodóvar to Present Academy Awards

We don't have a whole lot to go on here but Thompson on Hollywood (or, if you prefer, Anne Thompson) writes that Quentin Tarantino and Pedro Almodóvar will be among the presenters at the 144th annual Academy Awards in March. Thompson reports that Bill Mechanic, the Oscar telecast producer, confirmed the iconoclastic filmmakers' duties during that other Oscar show, Saturday night's Governors Awards.

As it happens, QT introduced Roger Corman, long overdue for some kind of official industry merit. Corman joined Lauren Bacall and cinematographer Gordon Willis as this year's recipients of honorary Academy Awards. Having Tarantino on hand for Corman's honorarium is a natural fit, and bringing him into the fold for the big show in March is at least something the producers can promote, even if Inglourious Basterds comes up empty in the nominations scramble.

I can't see that happening, not with the screenplay being what it is and Christoph Waltz firmly planted in the Best Supporting Actor category, but it's a nice back-up plan to have Tarantino on the stage in any case.

For Almodóvar, the Spanish director whose Broken Embraces might get his muse Penélope Cruz some additional Oscar heat, it's a chance to broaden his audience a bit more. Just a hunch: Could he be presenting Best Foreign Language Film? He's not going to be up for that one this year.

Hollywoodstjärnan Lauren Bacall mottog i helgen sin första Oscarstatyett, en hedersutmärkelse för sina drygt sextiofem år i filmens tjänst.

Efter filmer som ”Hur man får en miljonär” och ”Mordet på Orientexpressen” har den nu 85-åriga skådespelerskan äntligen fått sin första Oscarstatyett.

- Jag kan inte tro det är sant, äntligen en man, sa en märkbart tagen Lauren Bacall när hon mottog det guldfärgade hederspriset.

Oscarsgalan äger rum först i mars men den tjuvstartade redan i helgen med galamiddag och utdelandet av flera hederspriser. I publiken fanns bland annat Jack Nicolson, Warren Beatty, Tom Hanks och Kirk Douglas.

Lauren Bacall tillägnade priset sin tidigare man och motspelare Humphrey Bogart. Paret möttes under filminspelningen av ”Att ha och inte ha” och gifte sig året efter. Tolv år senare, 1957, avled Humphrey Bogart i strupcancer.

- Han gav mig ett liv och han förändrade mitt liv, sa Lauren Bacall till BBC News.

Den närmsta Lauren Bacall tidigare kommit en Oscar är nomineringen för sin roll i ”Kärlekens båda ansikten” från 1996.

Hints About 2010 Oscars Emerge: No More Five-Person Presenting

The Governors Awards were also a chance for Oscar telecast producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic to drop a few hints about what the big show will be like on March 7. Mechanic said they're not going to repeat the thing the 2009 show did where a coven of five past Oscar winners introduced the acting nominees.

As reported by Pete Hammond at the L.A. Times' blog The Envelope, Mechanic said that instead they'll do the traditional two-person presentations, but the pairings will have "real significance." He's already got Quentin Tarantino and Pedro Almodovar lined up to present the Foreign-Language award; I guess that combination has "real significance" because Almodovar makes foreign-language films and Tarantino, um, likes them. So we're on the right track!

Mechanic also told Hammond that he wants the show to have a lot of comedy, which makes sense given that the hosts are Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. And speaking of Baldwin, he said he's assuming Martin (who has hosted twice before) will do the heavy lifting, so he's not nervous about the show.

Personally, I loved the five-person presenting this year. I liked the one-on-one introductions from past winners to current nominees, like an old king bestowing knighthood on new subjects. But hey, anything keeps the show lively and fun is OK in my book. Mechanic and Shankman are creative, and they've already hired a couple of great co-hosts, so hopefully we'll see something memorable in March.

Att Up kommer att vinna en Oscar för bästa animerade film är det nog inget snack om. Det är utan tvekan den bästa animerade filmen som kommit i år och Pixar prenumererar mer eller mindre på att få en Oscar i denna kategori.

Men kan den även vinna Oscar för bästa film? Det verkar iallafall Pixar själva hoppas på. Här ovanför ser du en scannad version av deras ”For your consideration”-reklam och förutom att lista ”Best Animated Feature” så har dom även listat ”Best Picture”.

Med tanke på att det kommer att vara tio filmer i denna kategori från och med i år så borde den ha en chans att faktiskt bli nominerad. Men kan den vinna? Vad tror ni?

A guide to the Academy's preferential system

Some mysteries of the universe are eternal: Does God exist? What is the purpose of my life? And how does the Academy’s Oscar voting system work?

Since the third question is the most complicated, that’s the one we’ll start with.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences consists of 15 branches; voters nominate work in their own branch (directors nominate directors, editors nom editors, etc.). Everyone nominates best pic.

Nomination ballots will be mailed Dec. 28, and voters will receive a card with five blank spaces (in most categories) to fill in their top five choices.

OK, so far it’s easy, isn’t it? But now comes the hard part.

This year, the best-pic category will feature 10 blank spaces because of the expanded number of noms. Many voters will agonize over the order of their 10 choices. These voters mistakenly believe all 10 will count for something. In truth, only one of them will. And it may not be their first choice.

Confused?

Of course you are.

PricewaterhouseCoopers executives Brad Oltmanns and Rick Rosas explained it to me, and I will try to pass it along to you. But a disclaimer: I went over this several times with Rosas and Oltmanns (who are smart, have a great sense of humor and, crucially, are patient). I’ve written about it before and I still don’t completely get it. So if the following seems confusing, don’t blame yourself. But it does kinda/sorta make sense.

Here’s a case study. The directors branch had 375 voting members (as of 2008). So the PWC mavens take the number of possible nominees in that category (five) and add one. That total, six, is divided into the 375, which yields the magic number of 63. In round one of nomination tallies, the PWC folks take all the directors’ ballots and count up voters’ first-place choices: Any contender who earns the magic number — 63 votes — automatically has enough for a nomination.

The PWC mavens then set aside the ballots of those members who voted for that director, never to look at the other choices, because that voter’s voice has been heard. (And it’s possible more than one director has achieved that magic number.)

Then the team goes to round two: They take the stack with the fewest number of votes, and look at the second choice, and redistribute the ballots among the stacks. However, if a voter picked a director who had already hit the magic number, they go to the voter’s next choice. For each round, they look to a voter’s next highest choice — second, third, fourth, fifth — so long as that director remains in the running and has not otherwise hit the magic number.

OK, you totally understand the nomination process, right? Good, because we will explain the final ballots, and then there will be a quiz (and, yes, I do take off points for misspellings and bad penmanship).

But before that happens, here are some facts for you to ponder.

n The Academy is the only awards group that uses what’s called preferential voting, a system that Australia adopted as early as 1902. The Acad has been using it since 1936.

- It’s designed to deal with elections in which there is more than one result (e.g., five director nominees rather than a single presidential winner).

- This is not a “weighted ballot.” That system gives different points for different slots (10 points for first place, eight for second, etc.). That’s nice, but this isn’t that system.

- It doesn’t help your candidate if you fill out only one line, or fill the same name/title in all five slots.

- There are five categories that vote by committee: two short subjects, two docus and foreign-language.

OK, let’s move on to the final voting.

After the AMPAS nomination deadline (which will be Jan. 23), the PricewaterhouseCoopers experts assemble all the ballots. In most of the categories, it will be straightforward counting: The person with the most votes wins.

But for best pic, there are 10 noms. So the preferential system will be used again. And, you may ask, in a world that’s already complicated, why are they making things more difficult? Why not just go with the first-place vote? Excellent question. Here are the reasons: By using the preferential system here, PWC and the Acad avoid the possibility of a film winning with only 11% of the votes and avoid the possibility of a tie.

How is this so? Sorry, I’m not going to explain it. It’s too complicated and you’re asking too many questions. Trust me, it’s true.

OK, so the PWC pros form 10 piles for best pic, one for each film. They go through the first-place choices. And the film with the lowest number of first-place votes is eliminated. Then they take the nine remaining films, and go through the second-place choices. Again, the lowest vote-getter is eliminated. In all, they will do eight rounds of this.

At the end, the winning film will have 50% of the votes — plus one.

I was going to address the question of God and why we’re put on Earth, but we’ve run out of space. Maybe next week. Besides, who has time to worry about these things during awards season?

Ännu finns det dock inga tider eller kategorier för Star Trek. I stället är det Up in the air och The lovely bones som bolaget storsatsar på, då det sker flera visningar runt om i USA och London under främst december månad. (+)

Nomineras Star Trek som bästa film?
Nytt för i år är att tio i stället för fem filmer nomineras i kategorien bästa film. Orsaken sägs vara vikande tittarsiffror för Oscarsgalan samt att populära och kritikerrosade filmer som The dark knight ignorerades förra året. Star Trek har sedan den släpptes i maj omnämnts som en möjlig kandidat.

Fifteen films will vie as semifinalists in the race for the best visual effects Oscar.

They are: "Angels & Demons," "Avatar," "Coraline," "Disney's a Christmas Carol," "District 9," "G-Force," "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," "Sherlock Holmes," "Star Trek," "Terminator Salvation," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "2012," "Watchmen" and "Where the Wild Things Are."

In early January, the members of the Academy's visual effects branch executive committee, who selected the semifinalists, will whittle down the contenders to a shortlist of seven.

All members of the branch will then be invited to view 15-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Jan. 21. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.

Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be announced on Feb. 2.

Jag har svårt att se att någon ska kunna klå Avatar och James Cameron på effekt-oscars den här gången. Filmen är ju välplacerad för Oscarsgalan och bara det faktum att Cameron gör film igen kan rendera en Oscar. Nu har den iofs inte haft premiär men om den inte bombar helt vilket jag har svårt att tro med tanka på förhandsbeskeden så lär den vinna ett par Oscars.

Det är ju massa politik i hela Oscarsgalan, för att inte säga i princip bara...

Tyvärr är det så: ett spel för gallerierna. Jag tar det själv med en klackspark och ser det mer som underhållning (alltid lika intressant att se vem/vilka som står högt i kurs hos juryn). Sen är det ju bara en bonus om det är en film/person/personer som vinner en Oscar som verkligen förtjänar det

Som vanligt kommer jag satsa allt för att hinna se de flesta filmerna som nomineras. Jag menar, annars kan jag ju inte tycka till och klaga på juryn etc

Med alla rekord Avatar skördar så känns det inte helt otroligt att den får några nomineringar kan jag tycka. Men som vi sagt här innan: man kan aldrig veta hur juryn till slut resonerar...

Film- och tv-producenterna, som har sin egen lilla 'gala', har offentliggjort sina nomineringar.
Nu tycker jag det ska bli riktigt spännande att se de nominerade för Bästa Film (Oscar). Enligt nedanstående lista finns Avatar, Star Trek och District 9 med, vilket får en att undra om åtminstone de två förstnämnda har en chans att nästla sig in i Oscars-kategorin Bästa Film? Vilken skräll om Star Trek gjorde det och så häftigt! Ännu coolare om den tog hem det, jag menar: en Star Trek film (plus att den är ju faktiskt sevärd) tillika en sci-fi film
Noterar även att den animerade filmen Up finns på två listor, både för spelfilm och som animerad. Också ett tecken?
Förra året vann Slumdog Millioniare och WALL-E. Båda gick det ju riktigt hyfsat för vad gäller Oscars.

Spontant tycker jag det skulle vara jättekul om Bigelow skulle få Oscarn för Bästa regi bara för att sätta p för gubbväldet , men självklart ska det vara den som yrkesmässigt gjort sitt jobb bäst och då jag ej har sett alla filmerna så ska jag ej säga något...än.

Oj, vart ska man börja kommentera?

Det verkar iag kunna bli en spännande OScarsgalan känns det som. Av dom filmerna som finns med i förhandssnacket så har jag inte sett många alls. Vilket iofs inte är ovanligt. Jag brukar dessutom inte ha chansen att göra det innan galan heller, men i år ser det ut att kunna bli ändring på det. För mig som filmnörd är det en av årets höjdpunkter och det är det självklart trevligt att ha sett merparten av dom nominerade filmerna.

Som vanligt ska man väl egentligen inte uttala sig innan man har sett filmerna men...

Det känns spännande att Kathryn Bigelows film "The Hurt Locker" finns med i förhandssnacket. Jag är mycket nyfiken på att få se filmen och Kathryn brukar ju nästan alltid leverera.

En annan intressant sak är att Quentin Tarantino omnämns att kanske kunna bli nominerad för sitt manus till "Inglourious Basterds". Jag har fortfarande inte sett filmen, men misstänker att den är sevärd då Quentin alltid är bra. Speciellt kul vore det om han blev nominerad för manuset.

Desutom intressant att se hur det går för alla genrefilmer i år. Speciellt inom Sci-Fi och så. Det verkar ju som att kanske både Star Trek och District 9 kan ligga bra till i flera kategorier än dom vanliga som den typen av film brukar bli nominerad till. Även Avatar för den delen, men eftersom jag är skeptisk till vad den filmen har som är Oscarskvalité (mer än effekterna och så) så känns det mer som att den kan ställa till det för en del andra, mer värdigare vinnare då man blir lite förblindad av filmens teknik osv samt det faktum att det trots allt är Cameron vi pratar om. Men vi får se.

Sedan är ju ändringarna i själva galan av intresse och öppnar ju ut för flera intrerssanta utslag.

Ja visst är det intressant att det finns några sci-fi filmer som kan tänkas komma med i bilden. Avatar är ett absolut måste att se nu så att jag får se med egna ögon vad alla pratar om och om den har mer än det tekniska att bli imponerad över...

Ang. Inglourious Basterds så känns Christoph Waltz som det säkraste kortet. Garanterat nominerad och troligen vinner han också beroende på hur motståndet ser ut.

Härligt att höra! Hur brukar du göra - försöker du se så många filmer som möjligt innan?

Jag har precis beställt ett gäng filmer, bl a IB, som jag ser framemot att se. Ligger lite efter i filmtittandet

Ja jag brukar försöka få tag i så många som möjligt efter att nomineringarna har släppts. Vanligtvis brukar det florera rätt många DVD screeners på dom nominerade filmerna så jag brukar hinna se det mesta förutom kortfilmer, dokumentärer och icke-engelsk språkiga filmer.

Yay!@Wylie. Trevligt att vi blir minst ett litet gäng som ser och kommenterar galan.

I år ska jag se galan tillsammans med Synon. Det ska bli riktigt kul, då det dom senaste åren oftast har varit ont om intresse i min umgängeskrets till att se galan tillsammans. Jag tror mest att det beror på att dom flesta har bildat familj och sådant tjafs som en annan inte direkt prioriterar över filmintresset.

Skämt åsido. Detta år verkar det dessutom som att jag har möjligheten (mycket tack vare Synon) att kunna se ett störra antal med dom aktuella filmerna inför galan och det var bra länge sedan senast. Det brukar alltid vara höjdpunkten innan, att kunna bilda sig en egen uppfattning. Det hela blir ju roligare så.

@ Wylie ang. Christoph Waltz: jag har hört liknande resonemang tidigare. Nu har jag inte sett filmen. Än. Men hans prestation är alltså något utöver det vanliga i din mening? Spännande. Jag tänkte mig mer manus. Iofs har väl Herr Tarantino lånat VÄLDIGT mycket till den här filmen, så det kanske inte är så troligt att det blir nominerat.

@Synon ang. Avatar: jag skulle mer än gärna vilja se filmen. Fast då i 3D, för annars känns det lite "so-so" om jag ska vara ärlig. Kanske att vi får möjlighet till det (om du orkar med ) innan det är dags för galan. På tal om typiska genrefilmer (Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Äventyr osv) så är det ju rätt ovanligt att dom återfinns i annat än specialeffekts-kategorin. Nu vill jag ju att rätt filmer ska vara nominerade och att rätt filmer ska vinna. Så är det väl alltid. Men visst är det lite eggande med tanken på att en del genrefilm kan slå sig in i övriga kategorier med, speciellt då en del av dom ju faktiskt är bra.
