Trekweb - Robert Picardo on Why He Joined Stargate Atlantis After Seven Seasons of Voyager
16 August 2008
Pop Culture Zoo posted new interviews with the cast of Stargate Atlantis, including former Voyager actor Robert Picardo. Here are few excerpts of the article.
Asked what made him decide to jump back into another sci-fi show after Voyager, Picardo said that enough time had gone by and he likes the routine of being on a television series, the sense of family. It gives you great freedom to do other things. "In your time off, if you want to go do a play, you have the money to go do that. You don't have to make decisions based on financial concerns because that part is taken care of. So, it gives you all kinds of freedom to do creative and different things, whether it's travel, take time off, write a book or do something with my children or go on an extended college tour. I have the freedom to do all this other stuff because I'm now working steadily for seven months of the year. But more than that, Star Trek has given me a dedicated group of fans who like to watch me and they watch me in any other show I pop up in. They're particularly gratified to see me pop up in another science fiction show that they like anyway. It's been a win-win for me. And I also think I'm the first actor to play a regular part in both of the major science fiction franchises. Straddling two studio franchises like a colossus!"
The full interviews are here.

SciFi green-lights Stargate Universe
Proving that you can't keep a good franchise down -- at least not for more than a day or so -- the SCI FI Channel has green-lit production on Stargate Universe, the third live-action television series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wright: Atlantis is going out on top
The decision to end Stargate Atlantis and jump to the movie format was made mutually by the SCI FI Channel, MGM, and Stargate Productions in Vancouver, executive producer Brad Wright told GateWorld today. Rather than canceling the show because of under-performance, the Powers That Be decided to go out on top while Atlantis is still popular enough to support the release of DVD movies.

SciFi.com >> SciFIWire >> Stargate Universe Coming
SCI FI Channel is set to announce the pickup of Stargate Universe, the third series in the long-running franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
News of Universe comes on the heels of SCI FI's announcement that the current Stargate Atlantis will not receive a sixth-season order, the trade paper reported. Atlantis will live on in a two-hour telefilm to air on SCI FI in 2009.
Universe will premiere as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.
The new show will involve more space-based action than either of the predecessor series, the trade paper reported.
Universe introduces a new team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a pre-programmed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe.
Appearances by former cast members from SG-1 and Atlantis are very possible.

voyager, någon?introduces a team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogrammed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe.
The show will involve more space-based action than "SG-1" or "Atlantis."

By now, I assume you've all heard the news. This will be Stargate Atlantis's fifth and final season. I'm disappointed but not surprised. We came into this year knowing that renewal would be a longshot. With 100 episodes under our belts, rising production costs, and the US dollar's steep decline, the odds were stacked against us. Still, we'd heard no definite word either way and if SG-1's surprising 10-year run taught us one thing, it's that anything is possible. The circumstances that contributed to SG-1's longevity were very different but, back then, we hadn't expected it to get a sixth season pick-up either. Furthermore, with our strong premiere numbers and the equally impressive showing of the ensuing episodes, some of us were, if not exactly upbeat, then cautiously optimistic. We watched. We waited. And, finally, received word the other day.
We told the cast first, then headed down to set and broke the news to the crew. These are people who have given so much of themselves over the show's five-year run and we felt it only right that they hear it from us rather than finding out about it elsewhere.
It's been a bittersweet couple of days. On the one hand, I'm sorry to see the series end but, on the other hand, I'm extremely proud of what we've accomplished. 100 episodes is pretty damn impressive feat and, as evidenced by the quality of recent stories and the uptick in the ratings, we'll be going out on a high. Even though I see a lot of anger directed at both MGM and Sci Fi, the fact is we couldn't have done it without their support. And we're going to count on that support as Atlantis continues its adventures as a movie franchise.

Not all fans are carrying the same sentiment. Two fan Web sites for "Atlantis" known as Save the Lost City and Save Our 'Stargate: Atlantis' have joined forces to create a more organized campaign in an effort to save the show. Through the site Save-TheLostCity.com the fans have mounted a new campaign to let both MGM and SciFi Channel know that they think cancelling "Atlantis" was a bad idea.
In fact, the campaign has already begun efforts to send thousands of Rodney McKay's favourite fruit -- lemons -- to protest the cancellation. (Källa)

GateWorld - Stargate Universe to film in February
The new third live-action series in the Stargate franchise is gearing up to begin production.
Stargate Universe will begin principle photography on February 4, 2009, according to a new report at My Entertainment World. The show will film at The Bridge Studios and on location in and around Vancouver, British Columbia.
That's all the details so far -- just the start date for filming. MGM and the SCI FI Channel have not yet announced the title of the pilot, who will direct it, and of course the cast of Stargate Universe remains unknown. Series co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper are writing the 2-hour premiere episode.

GateWorld - Meet the Stargate Universe team!
Casting calls have gone out for the third series' main characters, and today the short character break-downs arrived at GateWorld.
Note that while this information doesn't come from our usual source of casting sides, it does come from a source with a proven track record. But until we have more solid confirmation, it should be considered rumor.
As anticipated, the team is led by an older veteran officer, Colonel Everett Young. Young is described as "like the Jack O'Neill of ten years ago, but Young's edges have tended to sharpen over time." The show's producers are looking to cast an established, "name" actor in this role.
The rest of the cast of characters is made up of young men and women, mostly in their early to mid twenties. (Keep in mind that when Stargate SG-1 began in 1997, Michael Shanks, Christopher Judge, and Amanda Tapping were also in their twenties.)
Also, remember that these character names and details are subject to change as the roles are cast. (Did you not ever meet Dr. Benjamin Ingram on Stargate Atlantis? That's because he was changed to Rodney McKay when David Hewlett auditioned.)
Stargate Universe will begin shooting February 4 for a summer 2009 premiere on the SCI FI Channel. Learn more about the new series in GateWorld's Stargate Universe Launch Center!
Colonel Everett Young
40's handsome, capable, former SG team leader. Like the Jack O'Neill of ten years ago, but Young's edges have tended to sharpen over time. He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he's temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive. STAR NAMES ONLY. SERIES REGULAR;
Tamara Jon
20-25, all ethnicities (Asian Preferably). SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable. Paramedic level training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn't afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do. SERIES REGULAR;
Chloe Carpenter
20ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father's footsteps but for now she's a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father's tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character. SERIES REGULAR;
Eli Hitchcock
20-25. Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to. Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon's character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in sptv050769. SERIES REGULAR;
Lt. Jared Nash
20-25. Junior S.G.C. team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl's fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he's ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained however he is mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation. SERIES REGULAR;
Ron "Psycho" Stasiak
20, all ethnicities. Marine. Big, strong, silent. You want him on your side. You don't want him mad at you. Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations. His past is a mystery but it's clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he'd kill everyone around him. Think Eric Bana's character "Hoot" in Blackhawk Down. SERIES REGULAR.

Stargate SG-1 - Is There Any Truth to the Rumors of a Blu Ark?
Our sources say 'yes', and to expect it early in the new year!
Posted by David Lambert
9/29/2008
This past March the folks at MGM, through distributor Fox Home Entertainment, released Stargate - The Ark of Truth, the direct-to-video story which picked up where the Stargate SG-1 weekly series left off at the end of its 10th and final season. The feature was released only on DVD, while the follow-up direct-to-video feature Stargate: Continuum was released on Blu-ray Disc, day and date in July with its own DVD version. A number of fans have said they would absolutely love to be able to upgrade to a high-definition Blu-ray version of Ark of Truth.
Some rumors had circulated that a Blu-ray release of Stargate - The Ark of Truth might be in the works, mostly due to an Amazon listing telling readers to "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available". Unfortunately those types of pages at Amazon doesn't mean that a release is for-sure coming; it only means that Amazon is collecting names of potential customers, in case such an item (that people are doing searches at Amazon for) ever does get released. But now, it seems that there might be quite a bit more to it!
Inside-the-industry gossip has been passed along to us today from reliable sources. They tell us that MGM/Fox is indeed planning a high-def Blu-ray Disc version of Stargate - The Ark of Truth. This release will happen early in 2009, probably in January, we're told. No details or art are available yet, of course. But we would expect it to have at least all the same contents, including extras, as the DVD version. We also expect that pricing would probably be similar to the Blu-ray version of Continuum, which clocked in at $39.99 SRP. Those last couple of sentences are just guesswork, though...please take it with a grain of salt!
It DOES sound pretty solid to us, though, as rumors go (or else we wouldn' t be passing it along). Stay tuned, and we'll update you with more about this, as further developments occur!

Our big two-part premiere would have picked up where we’d left off after the shocking events of our fifth season finale: Enemy at the Gate. Would have picked up? What am I saying? WILL pick up since the idea originally conceived for the opening two-parter will now be the basis of the first Stargate: Atlantis movie, the difference being that we’ll be able to tell our story on a much bigger, visual effects-laden, character-centered canvas.

EDIT: Tack GaterGirl.

Nytt SGA avsnitt imorgon...
