Exclusive Stargate Universe Updates

SCI FI Wire has gotten a bunch of exclusive updates about SCI FI Channel's new show Stargate Universe, including the news that executive producers Brad Wright and Robert Cooper are planning on delivering a first draft of the pilot script by the end of the year.

In other exclusive news:

--We're told that work on the script started after a major creative meeting last month between SCI FI executives and representatives from the show's producer, MGM, where the two companies discussed and agreed on the overall creative direction of the show.

--We learned this week that producers have already pitched some initial episode ideas and that preliminary concept art was Fed-Exed from MGM offices in Vancouver, Canada, to SCI FI's development team in Los Angeles.

--MGM and SCI FI have already begun batting around casting ideas for Universe, although they haven't shared information about what the roles will be or which actors are being considered. Yet.

What we know about Universe is that it's executive-produced by Wright and Cooper, the co-creators of Universe's predecessor series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Stargate Universe centers on a simple reconnaissance mission that turns into a never-ending quest as a new crew of Stargate explorers gates onto the Destiny, an Ancient ship that is unable to return to Earth. They will travel to the far reaches of the universe, encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

SCI FI Channel plans to begin production of the show in early 2009 and debut it next summer with a two-hour premiere. --Patrick Lee, News Editor

Cooper: Universe team is identifiable

The characters who make up Stargate Universe's team will be unqualified, imperfect, and imminently relatable, according to series co-creator Robert C. Cooper. Cooper talks about the characters and the show's pre-production progress in a new interview at MGM's official Stargate site, Stargate.MGM.com.

"One of the things I'm really excited about is that we're looking for people who are a little more identifiable and contemporary," Cooper told the site. "I always thought one of the things that was attractive about the original series was the 'everyman on the street' point of view that O'Neill had to science fiction. It made the characters identifiable. They were more like we would be in a science fiction situation, and how we would react. And that's what we're trying to do with the new show -- create characters that are going to be challenged by the situation."

The Stargate franchise has always sought to tell stories with present-day, relatable characters going on incredible adventures. But the third series will emphasize that more than its predecessors, putting younger and less experienced men and women into the field.

The team includes a number of unlikely candidates, including a Senator's daughter (Chloe Carpenter) and young, slacker computer genius (Eli Hitchcock), as well as a group of junior S.G.C. officers. Their leader, Colonel Everett Young, is an experienced officer in his 40s -- but the rest of the team is still wet behind the ears.

And there's a good reason for that, Cooper hints.

"The team that ends up on the ship is not really who was supposed to go, and in some cases they're very unprepared and unqualified to be in that situation," he said. "So they don't have all the answers as quickly, and the challenges are greater than they would be for people who have seen it all and don't have as far to go as characters when they encounter an incredible situation."

It's certainly a far cry from the world's leading minds sent to the Pegasus Galaxy in the premiere of Stargate Atlantis.

Stargate Universe will begin filming in February, and Cooper said that the target is for a July 2009 premiere on the SCI FI Channel in the United States. SGU uppdatering

The third Stargate series marches rapidly toward its February shooting date, and pre-production is moving along at a rapid pace. Writer-producer Joseph Mallozzi has been updating fans on the show's progress this month at his blog.

"Brad and Rob did a terrific job of kicking things off in thrilling fashion," Mallozzi said of the premiere episode's script. "The script is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he's going to be a handful. Originally planned as a two-parter, Brad and Robert quickly discovered that there was simply too much story for such a tight frame, so the series opener is now looking like a three-parter."

The complete writing staff from Stargate Atlantis is back to kick off the new series, including showrunners Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, plus Carl Binder, Martin Gero, Alan McCullough, Paul Mullie, and Mallozzi himself. (While Wright previously expressed an interest in bringing in new writers, there is no news yet on whether that will happen.)

Stories for the rest of Season One are being spun in the writer's room at The Bridge Studios. "Brad has laid claim to #4, a story that is right up his alley," Mallozzi continued. "Speaking of perfect pairings, I couldn't think of anyone better than Carl Binder to write #5. Rob is eyeing #6 which offers a most intriguingly SF door in, while #7 and #8 have yet to be claimed."

Martin Gero's first script "involved a long, long discussion on the workings of a certain technology which forms the impetus to another terrific character-driven story."

The team has left episode nine temporarily on the shelf to discuss episodes 10 and 11, which would typically be a mid-season two-parter for a Stargate series. But "I hesitate to call it a two-parter because, the way these episodes have developed so far, there are a threads that run through all the stories, in essence making this season one big 20-parter," Mallozzi said.

Mallozzi will write episode 10, and Mullie number 11. The producer teased: "Ticking clocks, twists and turns, alliances, betrayals, and a surprise guest!"

Set on board an Ancient vessel called the Destiny, Universe follows Colonel Everett Young and a team of young and largely untested men and women. Stargate Universe will be more of a character-based show with more deliberate story arcs, as opposed to the more stand-alone, action-based nature of Atlantis and even SG-1.

But many fans are nervous about the new series and its apparent differences from what has made Stargate what it is over the past 12 years. Others, however, believe that this sort of change is just what the franchise needs in order to be reenergized.

"Stargate Universe is a series that draws on established mythology yet blazes a bold, new path for the franchise," Mallozzi told fans. "It's definitely more character-centered and intimate in its exploration of the interpersonal dynamics that will drive a lot of the shipboard developments (and, no, I'm not talking about romance). The premise of this ship hurtling through uncharted territories offers up unbounded story possibilities, yet also forces us to adopt a very different approach toward alien encounters and planetary investigation. Twin themes mentioned over the course of today's conversations: survival and sacrifice."

"The premise of SGU is ... more intimate -- a limited group of people trapped aboard a space ship hurtling through distant space -- and therefore necessitates a more intimate form of storytelling."

Mallozzi also said that the design of the Destiny is close to being decided. There is also a new Universe version of the M.A.L.P. probe in the works.

Jason Momoa, who plays Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis, was attacked on 15 November in Hollywood, requiring 140 facial sutures during reconstructive surgery.

An argument reportedly broke out between Momoa, 29, and a 21-year-old Venice resident named Dominic Bando, in a café on Franklin Avenue. Momoa was allegedly struck with a beer glass during the resulting altercation, according to the Los Angeles Country District Attorney’s office. Bando was arrested and released on $300,000 bail, and is due to be arraigned on 10 December. He was previously on probation for a conviction in March of carrying a loaded firearm.

Momoa, who has played the character on Atlantis since the first season, is also known for a three-season role in Baywatch.

Universe premiere is 'Air'

The first working title of Stargate Universe has been revealed, kicking off the next era of our episode-by-episode coverage. The series premiere of the third live-action Stargate series will be titled "Air," according to executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.

Written by series co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, the episode will, of course, introduce the young new team and get them stuck on board the Ancient ship Destiny -- sent out eons ago to explore worlds where another ship had automatically seeded Stargates.

"Air" is currently at the script stage, and looks like it may expand to three hours, Mallozzi said.

The title is a bit more nondescript than SG-1's "Children of the Gods" and Atlantis's "Rising." Just how "air" is related to the episode's central plot remains to be seen.

"So far, Martin, Carl, and Alan have put out outlines (and I've already provided notes on all three), and Rob and Brad have put out the first draft of the opening three-parter, 'Air,' which puts me tied for last place with Paul (who, I'm assuming, is just about finished his pass on our outline for the SGA movie). Priority #1 now for me is hammering out an outline for the first part of the SGU mid-season two-parter.

"From what I understand, casting is still ongoing but I expect we'll be hearing word on some decisions soon."

Robert Carlyle has been tapped as the lead in SCI FI Channel's new series Stargate Universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Universe is the third installment in the Stargate franchise, from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, who will write and executive-produce the new series.

SCI FI Channel is expected to give the MGM TV-produced Universe a 20-episode order.

Production on the series is slated to begin in February in Vancouver, Canada. It is targeted to launch in the summer with a two-hour premiere.

Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, Universe follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home, but who also might have ulterior motives.

Scotland-born Carlyle, best known for his roles in Trainspotting and The Full Monty, recently starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Fox's 24: Redemption.

Stargate Universe is set on board the Destiny, a ship created by the Ancients millions of years ago which is following a pre-programmed course from one galaxy to the next.

While the studio is touting Carlyle as the "leading role" in the new series, the show's producers tell GateWorld that Universe will be a true ensemble show. It's not entirely clear just what role Dr. David Rush will play on board the Destiny. The character did not appear in the original casting calls, which led us to believe that the team that finds itself stranded on the Ancient ship would be led by military Colonel Everett Young.

Rush is not a replacement for Young, however, and may not even be the mission commander. More recent casting documents include an audition scene between the two men (which may or may not actually appear on screen), in which the two argue about who should be in command.

Based on new story details provided in today's press release, that's because the team has found itself on board the Destiny by accident:

Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space. As they fight to survive, Dr. Rush (Carlyle) works to unlock the mysteries of the ship and return the group home, but evidence of his ulterior motives soon arises.

Everett Young is described in casting documents as the temporary commander of a secret off world base. It's purely speculation at this point, but Rush may have found a way to reach the Destiny (using the Stargate's ninth chevron, as previously revealed), only to be forced through the gate prematurely when the base comes under attack, with a group he never intended to take: Young and a team of young soldiers and civilians, refugees from the compromised base.

Additional casting is currently underway and we expect to hear more news in the coming days and weeks, as the series prepares to begin principal photography on February 4. At least six major roles have yet to be cast, including Colonel Young, Captain Tamara Jon, Chloe Carpenter, Eli Hitchcock, Lt. Jared Nash, and Ron "Psycho" Stasiak

Answer: I believe the CotG is done. No idea when it will be released but I imagine very soon. As for the SG-1 movie - Brad and Carl broke the story together and now Carl is off writing the script. When he last reported in, Carl was about halfway through a first draft.

A new version of the episode is currently in production, re-edited using footage shot in 1997 as well as updated visual effects. The beginning will be slightly altered, a new scene will be added, and the nudity scene will be taken out, although the final movie will be roughly 7 minutes shorter than the original episode. Joel Goldsmith will re-score the music. It will be released on DVD in 16:9 widescreen format, and may also be aired on television.[16]
