SCI FI Wire: Michael Shanks has a surprise about Stargate Universe
Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson) revealed to SCI FI Wire that he may have a role in the pilot of SCI FI Channel's upcoming new series Stargate Universe.
(Possible spoilers ahead!)
"I talked to [executive producer] Brad Wright a couple of weeks ago, and he asked me if I'd be interested in doing a cameo in the Universe pilot, and I of course said I would be," Shanks said in an exclusive interview. "And there's a great deal of talk about [it]. ... They've got a script going and everything like that."
Shanks added that he hasn't put Dr. Jackson away completely yet. "There will be a Stargate SG-1 movie [for DVD], probably filmed around the same time the [Stargate] Atlantis movie is filmed this coming summer," he added. "So that's all going to be going on."
Shanks played Jackson on and off for a decade in Stargate SG-1, as well as on the spinoff series Stargate Atlantis and in the made-for-DVD movies The Ark of Truth and Continuum.
The next SG-1 movie, "as far as I know, is pretty Rick-heavy [as in Richard Dean Anderson], pretty O'Neill [Anderson]-heavy," Shanks said. "So I don't know much more than that, but I will most definitely be involved in it."
Since SG-1 ended in 2007, Shanks has been busy with guest appearances on TV shows, including USA Network's Burn Notice and the upcoming telemovies Living Out Loud and Desperate Escape (with Angel's Elisabeth Rohm).
Shanks explained that it's the ideal situation to be able to stay in the Stargate game without being tied to it as an everyday job. "It's great," he said. "After 10 years and getting not picked up or canceled or whatever you want to call it, it feels almost a little bit odd, because you're so used to the process. But going away from it, it's great to be able to explore other opportunities. When you're doing a show for nine months a year, you always want to shake it up and do other things, but you don't have the time. Now, it's the best of both worlds. We can get on with it and have other experiences and still revisit the franchise and the great family environment that we have with the cast and crew. 'The further adventures of ...' is a nice treat."
Edgier and younger in tone than the two previous series, Stargate Universe follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth.
The cast includes Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Brian J. Smith and Jamil Walker Smith. Production will begin in Vancouver, Canada, in February with an eye toward a fall premiere.

GateWorld » SCI FI eyeing October 2 for Universe premiere?
If you are writing this down in your day planner, be sure to use pencil. The SCI FI Channel may be looking at Friday, October 2 as the premiere date for Stargate Universe in the United States.
Sanctuary actress and executive producer Amanda Tapping told Pop Culture Zoo this week that the network wants to pair the second season of that show with Universe on Friday nights. “SCI FI wants us to air October 9th,” she told the site. “We will run concurrently with Stargate Universe. I think they premiere with a two-hour episode and then the following week we will run together.”
That would put “Air” Parts 1 and 2 as the premiere event on October 2, and “Air, Part 3″ on October 9.
The timing jives with SCI FI’s program scheduling from years past. The cable network has traditionally run its summer programs through the third or fourth week of September, and kicked off its new fall shows on either the last Friday of September or the first of October.
Sanctuary had its two-hour series premiere on October 3 last year, and then aired alongside Stargate Atlantis starting October 10.
Of course, with eight months to go before the premiere of Stargate Universe, plans can certainly change. Filming on the show begins February 11.
Head to Pop Culture Zoo for more on Sanctuary and Stargate from Amanda Tapping, and stick with GateWorld for the latest on Stargate Universe as the show heads into full production!

Ray writes: “Has a decision been made on whether Robert Carlyle is keeping his native accent or adopting a North American twang for Universe?

Stargate Universe begins principal photography
The third live-action Stargate series is off and running! Principal photography for Stargate Universe began today at The Bridge Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Universe is getting ready for a fall premiere on the SCI FI Channel in the U.S., and tells the story of a group of military personnel and civilians who find themselves stranded on board the Destiny — a deep space exploratory vessel built by the Ancients many millions of years ago. The ship is on an unalterable, preprogrammed course from one galaxy to another, following up on new Stargates placed by another automated ship.
The series stars Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, 24: Redemption) as Dr. Nicholas Rush; Justin Louis (Durham County) as Colonel Everett Young; Brian J. Smith (Law & Order) as Lt. Matthew Scott; David Blue (Ugly Betty) as Eli Wallace; and Jamil Walker Smith (Hey Arnold!) as Senior Sgt. Ronald Greer.
Two more main cast members — the women, playing Captain Tamara Jon and civilian Chloe Walker — have not yet been announced, but as far as we know they have been cast. We’re expecting the official news from MGM and SCI FI any moment now.
The large set of the Destiny has been constructed on Stage 4 at The Bridge Studios, home to Stargate SG-1 (Stage 5) and Stargate Atlantis (Stage 6) over the past 12 years. Upstairs in the production office, Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper serve as showrunners and executive producers. Carl Binder (Stargate Atlantis) will also produce, while Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie serve as writers and consulting producers while they continue work on the Atlantis movie.
Former Atlantis writer-producers Martin Gero (story) and Alan McCullough will contribute scripts to the show, but have departed the full-time staff.
Mallozzi also unveiled a new working episode title on his blog this week: “Time,” penned by Robert Cooper.
Production is scheduled to run through October 23, according to the BC Film Commission.
We’ll continue to follow the development of Stargate Universe in the weeks and months ahead! We’re expecting more cast member names, the first cast photos and perhaps even a peek at the design for the Destiny, in the relatively near future.

Nordamerikanska fans har kunnat rösta om vilka avsnitt de velat ha på blu-ray. De vinnande avsnitten blev Rising och Enemy At The Gate. De kommer på blu-ray i sommar. Man har också chansen att designa cover-arten.
