Stargate Atlantis Fans’ Choice is coming to Blu-ray high definition in just a few weeks (August 4). But don’t hold your breath for more.

MGM and Fox Home Entertainment today released the official announcement for the Fans’ Choice release, which includes extended versions of the first (two-part) episode and the last episode of the series, “Rising” and “Enemy At the Gate.” But they also had this to say:

“Stargate Atlantis Fans’ Choice Blu-ray disc is the only high definition release planned for the Stargate Atlantis series.”

When the studio first announced the Blu-ray release, we speculated that it may be a way to “test the waters” of the new format, to determine if it would sell well enough to release full seasons of the Stargate series in high-def (particularly when much of the show’s core audience already own the episodes on standard DVD). If MGM and Fox have already decided not to do full-season releases, that seems not to be the case.

Dynamite acquires 'Stargate' licence

Dynamite Entertainment has acquired the rights to release comics based on popular science fiction franchise Stargate.

The publisher has planned three series of the comic book adaptation, one for each of the television programmes: SG-1, Atlantis and Universe.

A prequel comic to Stargate Universe will be released in October, featuring artwork by John Watson and cover designs from Dave Dorman. The storyline will be written by Chuck Dixon.

Atlantis season 6 and SG-1 season 11 will be given direct adaptations from Doug Murray and Brandon Jerwa respectively.

Dynamite will also launch a budget comic titled Stargate #0 to help promote all three titles.

Stargate comics were previously published by Avatar Press between 1996 and 2007.

Stargate Universe executive producer Robert C. Cooper has written scripts for a new potential Stargate SG-1 movie and a Stargate Atlantis film, but said it might be a while before they get a green light.

"We're ready to go," Cooper said in an exclusive interview over the weekend in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting SGU at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "We're just waiting for the right opportunity," he said. "We want to be successful with it. The studio wants to be successful, and we really don't want to proceed with something in the wrong climate, which I think financially it is right now."

Two previous SG-1 straight-to-DVD movies, Continuum and The Ark of Truth, sold well, but the current economic downturn makes DVD premieres less lucrative than they were in the past.

"It's tough, because we were very successful with the first two SG-1 movies," Cooper said. "Since then, the economics have changed a little bit. DVDs aren't selling the same way they were when we released those even just a year, and a year and a half ago."

A new compilation of Stargate Atlantis episodes, Fans' Choice, just dropped on Blu-ray on Aug. 4, featuring the pilot "Rising" and an extended cut of "Enemy at the Gate." That won't help Cooper mount a new production.

"That, obviously, is already produced," Cooper said. "Putting it on DVD or Blu-ray is not the same as the investment it would take to start from scratch."

Should the two DVD films be made, they would follow previous entries in having independent storylines that would not affect the upcoming Syfy original series SGU. "They would stand alone," Cooper said. "The Atlantis one takes place shortly after the end of season five. The SG-1, I think, takes place sometime in an intermediary period between when the SG-1 movies left off and when Universe began."

SGU debuts Oct. 2 with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT; it will air Fridays at 9 on Syfy.

Amanda Tapping: New Stargate SG-1 movie in works | SCI FI Wire

Amanda Tapping says that a new Stargate SG-1 movie could begin production later this year, as soon as the first season of Syfy's upcoming SGU: Stargate Universe wraps.

"As far as I know, we may start in late fall or early winter this year," Tapping said in an exclusive interview. "And I will slip back into Sam Carter very nicely; I'm looking forward to it."


Martin Wood would again direct. "They asked me to direct the Stargate SG-1 movie, and they are waiting until Universe is finished, and then, of course, they ask me when I'm available," said Wood, who was also a co-producer on Stargate SG-1 and a supervising producer on Atlantis, as well as an executive producer, with Tapping, on Syfy's Sanctuary. "Then that may get done by the end of the year, that's what everyone is hoping, at least."

What about a new Stargate Atlantis movie? "Atlantis is still being talked about for this year," Wood said. "Right now, I'm so far removed from it, but they'll let me know, and I'm happy to do it."

The SG-1 movie is green-lighted, and the Atlantis film is in the works, but both Wood and Tapping are already committed to the second season of Sanctuary, which finished filming in July but still needs work to be done. The first season's four-disc DVD set is coming out next Tuesday.

Wood spoke this week from his car, driving to finish up sound editing on season two of Sanctuary. He's eager to see Tapping put on Carter's fatigues again.

"Samantha Carter is a very familiar mindset for Amanda, so it won't be hard for her to find her," Wood said. "In fact, there are a number of people I've met going to conventions who said they did not realize at first that she was the same person as Dr. Magnus on Sanctuary."

Tapping said she tried very hard to make her role as Stargate's Col. Carter very different from the sultry and mysterious Dr. Helen Magnus, who runs a haven for abnormal creatures in Sanctuary.

"I dyed my hair and changed my accent and made it so that I don't look at all like Carter," Tapping said. "I needed to reinvent myself as an artist, so it was a challenge. I had to have more eccentricities and walk with stilettos."

The new season of Sanctuarybegins Oct. 9 and will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Tapping directs one of the new episodes. (Look for details on that tomorrow)

Tapping will also make an appearance in the premiere of Stargate Universe, which debuts Oct. 2 at 9 p.m.

Cult - News - Robert Carlyle: 'I wasn't a fan of SG-1' - Digital Spy

Robert Carlyle has admitted that he was not a fan of the original Stargate series before landing a role on latest spinoff Universe.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the 48-year-old Scottish actor, who previously starred as Francis Begbie in 1990s movie Trainspotting, revealed that he "hadn't really seen much" of SG-1 or Atlantis.

"It's funny," he said. "After I'd agreed to do the show and I got sent all the DVDs - two hundred f**king hours of SG-1 and all the rest of it! - I was surprised how much of it I had actually seen.

"I'd probably seen about 20 episodes of SG-1 over the years and I didn't see anything at all of Stargate Atlantis but that didn't seem to matter. This is a whole new deal, so I didn't have to sit and watch the whole back catalogue - that would have been a bridge too far!"

Carlyle plays the role of Dr Nicholas Rush in Stargate Universe, which premieres October 2 on Syfy in the US and October 6 on Sky1 in the UK.

The working title for the next Stargate SG-1 movie has been revealed. Stargate: Revolution will reunite the cast of the long-running show, including former lead Richard Dean Anderson.

The title has announced at Stargate writer-producer Joseph Mallozzi’s blog.

Revolution will be the third DVD movie for the SG-1 team — if it gets made, that is. After reportedly giving the production a green light this past spring (story), MGM placed it back in drydocks along with the Atlantis movie, Stargate: Extinction.

As of last spring, the intention was to shoot one or both of the movies this fall, with the SG-1 film apparently taking priority in the production schedule. But continuing economic pressures have prevented MGM from committing just yet (story).

Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum filmed in 2007 and were released in 2008.

The script for the SG-1 movie has been written by Brad Wright and Carl Binder, who are currently serving as executive producers on Stargate Universe, with a story reportedly set sometime between Continuum and the start of SGU. Wright told fans at this year’s Vancouver Stargate convention that “I had a story idea that really worked with O’Neill. And it’s not just his character, by any means. It’s a Stargate story that brings O’Neill back in a big way.”

On Thursday, it was reported that MGM may be auctioned off within the next few weeks, and now the studio has confirmed a possible sale in an official statement:

MGM said today its lenders have agreed to extend the forbearance until January 31, 2010. The lenders took this action in support of the Company's ongoing efforts to develop and evaluate long-term strategic alternatives to maximize value for its stakeholders. MGM appreciates the continued support of its lender group for the process it is undertaking. MGM also said today it is beginning a process to explore various strategic alternatives including operating as a standalone entity, forming strategic partnerships and evaluating a potential sale of the Company.

Michael Shanks Set To Make Two SGU Guest Spots

There's no such thing as too much Daniel Jackson, and as long as there is some Stargate series out there, Michael Shanks will be a part of it.

Shanks has proven that statement true as he is set to appear in two more episodes of "Stargate: Universe," including the penultimate episode "Subversion" that will lead into the first season finale.

Shanks will share screen time with Richard Dean Anderson, his former "Stargate SG-1" co-star, according to TV Guide Magazine.

However, that won't be the next time we see Shanks, according to GateWorld. Daniel Jackson will make an appearance in "Human," which will delve more into the background of our pal Dr. Rush, played by Robert Carlyle.

"My character exists more as a figment of Dr. Rush's imagination," Shanks said.

Both episodes will come after the mid-season break when the series picks back up in spring.
