WorstPreviews - Prince of Persia Details Revealed
07-26-2008
Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner appeared at San Diego Comic-Con where he discussed the upcoming Prince of Persia Disney movie, which is currently in development. [via IGN]
He said that the film will be based on the Sands of Time game, revealing that the script does not literally follow the storyline of the game. Mechner added that he does not expect any potential film sequels to be based on the subsequent games Warrior Within and The Two Thrones since they took the game's storyline in a different direction. Nothing from either of those games, including characters, will be in the current movie.
Mechner said that adapting an interactive experience into a non-interactive one means re-conceiving the story. The challenge of the script was in writing an entirely new story than the game even if it has the same meaning, plot elements, and characters as the game. The movie has to be different because it is engineered to be played while the film is a spectator experience. Mechner wants the viewer to be taken on an emotional journey and to care about the characters so that way it's not all just about fighting monsters and action set-pieces.
Unlike his game counterpart, the title character in the movie to be played by Jake Gyllenhaal will have a name. Mechner said that he chose the name Dastan for the prince because he believes its an old Persian name that means trickster.
Mechner wants the story to offer viewers a journey that takes them to more places than just a castle. Due to secrecy, he would not reveal what powers the prince might have in the movie or discuss key plot elements. He expects the film to be rated PG or PG-13 and for its level of violence to be along the lines of other summer blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean.

Empire: Movie News - Prince Of Persia Pushed Back To 2010
To allow more time for post-production
Source: Variety
Prince Of Persia, Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer’s big tentpole for the summer of 2009, has just become Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer’s big tentpole for the summer of 2010.
Yes, the Mike Newell-directed videogame adaptation, which started shooting last week in Morocco, has been pushed back by nearly a year, from June 19, 2009 to Memorial Day weekend in 2010. For those of you who don’t know when Memorial Day, don’t worry – it’s at the end of May.
The reason for the delay? To finish the thing and to get the special effects absolutely right, which is very commendable. Then again, it’s hard not to sympathise with the caution shown here by Bruckheimer and Disney, for whom the hope is that the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer will be another Pirates Of The Caribbean-style cash cow.
The move into 2010 takes Prince Of Persia away from Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, which would have opened a week later. In its place, though, Disney has moved up its Ryan Reynolds-Sandra Bullock rom-com, The Proposal – or The Counterprogrammer, as it perhaps should now be known.
It will now open, in 2010, one week after Shrek Goes Fourth, with nothing currently scheduled to go up against it. We must say that it seems strange for movies to be staking out release dates two, sometimes three years in advance, but the stakes are higher than ever these days (God, we sound old), so you can’t blame studios for indulging in what Kurt Cobain would have referred to as territorial pissings (and that reference really makes us sound old).

Korben.info has posted a bunch of photos of the PRINCE OF PERSIA sets constructed in Morocco.

ETOnline - Jake Gyllenhaal as The Prince Of Persia: "I've gotten buff"
November 13, 2008
Jake Gyllenhaal plays a 6th century prince who holds the fate of the world in his hands in the sweeping fantasy-adventure 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,' and ET's Thea Andrews got up close and personal with the newly minted action hero on the London set! So, how did Jake get that buff bod?
"I over-prepared myself because I never knew how much they were going to ask me to do, so I just made sure I'd be hopefully able to do anything," a playful Jake tells Thea.
The former 'Brokeback Mountain' star trained for months before the arduous Moroccan desert shoot, and has been training daily to maintain his action-hero physique, gaining five pounds of muscle.
"I guess I've gotten buff," he shrugs. "There's a lot acrobatics in the movie -- a lot of running up walls, and jumping on things and Parkour, so it requires muscularity, but it requires a lot of aerobic ability too."
When filming finally wraps, Jake promises with a smile, "It's going to turn into fat and I'm going to be happy."
'Pirates of the Caribbean' blockbuster producer Jerry Bruckheimer is bringing 'Prince of Persia' to life, based on the hugely popular video game and scheduled to open in theaters on May 28, 2010. The story finds Jake as Dastan, a young Persian prince who must join forces with the beautiful and feisty princess Tamina (played by 'Quantum of Solace' Bond girl Gemma Arterton) to prevent a villainous nobleman (Ben Kingsley) from possessing the Sands of Time -- a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
"I'm running away from family and I'm running away from bad guys and I'm trying to prove my innocence," says Jake, trying to keep the play-by-play plot details a secret. "There's so many extraordinary elements throughout the movie."
Watch ET for more with Jake and 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time'!

First Official Image of Jake Gyllenhaal In PRINCE OF PERSIA: Sands of Time
The first official image of Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan in Producer Jerry Bruckheimer's "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" has been released courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. Above you can see part of the image, and after the jump is the full version - along with why we're getting so many new images from tons of big movies this week:
The reason we've been overrun with new images is Comic-Con. Starting next Wednesday night and through Sunday, the studios and networks are going to do everything and anything to get people's attention. After all, the 100,000 people that attend Comic-Con are the most die-hard and usually the most vocal fans. If you impress the audience at Comic-Con, you've got a rabid and passionate base to spread the gospel about your film or TV show.
The only problem this year is most of the big movie related panels are Thursday. The only reason for that is the studios are trying to be part of the Friday news cycle, which is causing a clusterfuck for all the fans and journalists that want to cover everything.
So what does that mean for all of you not able to go to San Diego next week? You're going to want to pay attention to all your favorite websites on Thursday afternoon and Friday, as that's the time a lot of news will be breaking.
I'll be there - along with a lot of our regular contributors - so get ready for a lot of Comic-Con news next week. Until then, enjoy this image of Jake Gyllenhaal.

New 'Prince of Persia' Posters Are Looking for You - Film School Rejects
![]()
Empire has debuted two new UK posters for the upcoming Disney action adventure Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which features Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton as the Prince and his rival princess Tamina.
In the film — which is based on a classic video game created by Jordan Mechner — these two sexy, sand-blown kids of royalty team up to go after the Sands of Time, a time-controlling artifact held by the evil Nizam (Ben Kingsley). Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Prince of Persia will be producer Jerry Bruckheimer's next potential franchise, right in line with Pirates of the Caribbean. Fans of the video game will note that the very vogue vision of Jake Gyllenhaal in the first poster on the left is very similar to the digital prince who lives in the Ubisoft video game. As for Arterton in the poster on the right… well, if looks could kill.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2010.
