'Serenity' has moments, not much else
By Claudia Puig, USA TODAY
Though diehard fans probably will take issue, Serenity is mostly sci-fi silliness attempting to be something more substantive.
It is based on the short-lived Fox TV show Firefly, which attracted a cult following, and writer/director Joss Whedon squeezes out a few clever moments. But the characters are generally uninteresting and one-dimensional, and the futuristic Western-style plot grows tedious.
The story takes place 500 years in the future, when Earth has been destroyed by a war and the solar system taken over by a fascist alliance. A group of scruffy-but-hot rebels aboard the spaceship Serenity takes on the legions of evil fascists.
About the movie
Serenity
* * (out of four)
Stars: Nathan Fillion, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite
Director: Joss Whedon
Distributor: Universal Pictures
Rating: PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, and some sexual references
Running time: 1 hour, 59 minutes
Opens Friday nationwide
The frontier is planetary space. Much of the conflict centers on a psychic prodigy (Summer Glau) whom the bad guys want to exploit and the good guys have mixed feelings about because she's often more trouble than she's worth. As one member of the Serenity crew puts it, she's "a mite unpredictable." But she can kick butt like nobody's business.
The dialogue, delivered mostly in Southern accents, is intended to be funny and fresh, but much of this Western-influenced sci-fi adventure story feels reheated. And lines like "I aim to misbehave" or "I missed you something fierce" just sound grating and forced.
There is the occasional laugh when the drawl disappears and a contemporary sensibility takes hold. Someone tells a cohort knowingly: "It's not your way." And the person asks, "I have a way?"
Still, when films based on successful and beloved TV series have fallen flat over the years (like The Avengers or Twin Peaks) isn't it asking for trouble to make a movie version of a TV flop?

Claudia vet inte vad hon pratar om. Ointressanta och endimensionella karaktärer är motsatsen till det Joss skapat. But the characters are generally uninteresting and one-dimensional, and the futuristic Western-style plot grows tedious.
Nej, Claudia har fel igen. Det är härlig dialog, den är rolig och fräsh, som vi alla vet från Firefly. The dialogue, delivered mostly in Southern accents, is intended to be funny and fresh, but much of this Western-influenced sci-fi adventure story feels reheated. And lines like "I aim to misbehave" or "I missed you something fierce" just sound grating and forced.
Claudia har bevisligen ingen humor. There is the occasional laugh
Slutsats: jag gillar inte Claudia

Foster Flies Past Serenity
Source: Box Office Mojo , Edward Douglas October 3, 2005
The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with the studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to stay tuned there for the final figures on Monday.
For the second weekend in a row, Jodie Foster's thriller Flightplan was #1 at the box office, defeating what many analysts felt was the weekend favorite. With an estimated second weekend of $15 million and a respectable drop of less than 40%, it has grossed more than $46 million in just ten days.
The first big screen adventure of the crew of Joss Whedon's Serenity failed to bring in the number of Browncoats and science fiction fans that its distributor Universal may have hoped, although it still earned more than $10 million its opening weekend in only 2,188 theatres, averaging more per theatre than Flightplan.
Dropping to third place from last week's #2, Tim Burton's animated film Corpse Bride grossed roughly $9.7 million, a fairly substantial drop of 49% from its previous weekend in nationwide release. It has earned just under $33 million and will have to face DreamWorks' own stop motion offering Wallace & Gromit - The Curse of the Were-Rabbit next weekend.
Expanding into wide release, David Cronenberg's crime thriller A History of Violence, with Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello, had the highest per-theatre average of all the movies in the Top 10 or in wide release, earning $8.2 million in only 1,340 theatres. Based on the graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke, the film made more this weekend than Cronenberg's last three films made in total in their U.S. theatrical release.
It also did better than the underwater thriller Into the Blue, starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba, which opened in the most theatres of any new movie this weekend, but only averaged $2,500 in each, a weak opening weekend of just $7 million. (So what can we learn from this except that thrillers set in the air do well, and thrillers underwater don't?)
The Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy Just Like Heaven dropped down to sixth place with $6.1 million, bringing its total to just over $38 million, while Screen Gems' thriller The Exorcism of Emily Rose has now earned $68.5 million including the $4.4 million it made in its fourth weekend. Fox Searchlight's Roll Bounce starring Bow Wow, took a 47% drop in its second weekend, adding $4 million to its box office gross of $12.7 million. It dropped down four places to #8.
Disney's The Greatest Game Ever Played, starring Shia LaBeouf as the golfing underdog Francis Ouimet, opened in just over 1,000 theatres, where it earned approximately $3.7 million in ninth place.
Rounding out the top 10 was Universal's The 40-Year-Old Virgin, starring Steve Carell as the title character. It added another $3 million to its impressive take this weekend, finally crossing the $100 million mark.
After opening in New York and L.A. last weekend, Roman Polanski's version of Charles Dickens' classic Oliver Twist failed to find an audience in its nationwide expansion, earning $875 thousand in 779 theatres, an average of just $1,123 per theatre.
Sony Pictures Classics' Capote, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as the eclectic author, did very well its opening weekend in limited release, grossing $349 thousand in 12 theatres, an impressive average of $29 thousand per theatre.
Also in limited release, the true story family drama of DreamWorks' The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, starring Julianne Moore, earned $155 thousand in 41 theatres in select cities, a weak average of $3,780 per theatre, while Fox's romantic comedy Little Manhattan earned $38 thousand in just two theatres in New York City. Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's fantasy film MirrorMask opened in 18 theatres in select cities, averaging $7,000 for an opening weekend gross of $127 thousand.

Worst. Movie. Ever. was probably "Summer Holiday" with Mickey Rooney. Can you believe that kid was the biggest star in the world? Funny world.
Meanwhile, I’m just rounding out the weekend with a little praise for my dear peeps. Considering everything we’ve had to overcome, this is an extraordinary achievment. And you guys have been in the front lines. I lurk, I know all. So thanks. Some of you might know that this flick means more than a little to me.
Yes, the second weekend will tell all, as we’ve always known. I’m not here to push you guys — you push yourselves way harder than I could anyway. I’m just trying to figure out how to get the message out to the guys that aren’t you, that don’t know any of you, and that don’t run into someone who saw the film. I’ll be hounding the extremely patient Uni execs on that very subject. Like the lady said, "People have to know".
It’s not that there HAS to be a sequel. It’s just that I’ve got so many IDEAS...
