/Film - William Shatner Screws Himself Out of Star Trek
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Apparently JJ Abrams originally wrote William Shatner into the new Star Trek reboot.“We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing,” Abrams told AMCtv. “But the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.”
So there you have it. William Shatner is the reason William Shatner doesn’t make a cameo in the new Trek.

Trekmovie - More From Kevin Smith On Star Trek, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana
September 10, 2008
A few weeks ago we first reported that Clerks director Kevin Smith gave a review of his early screening of JJ Abrams Star Trek. Now MTV has got the geek insider, who seems to see everything early, to talk more about the movie as well as the new Kirk (Chris Pine) and also the new Uhura (Zoe Saldana).
Smith on seeing Star Trek:“It’s really strong, [J.J. Abrams] was rejiggering the opening few scenes. It’s one of those things where you first heard about it and were like no they’re not going to redo ‘Star Trek’! And then you see the movie and you think, wow he did pull it off! He turned it into a viable renewed franchise.”
Smith on Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana:Chris Pine is fantastic. It is a star-making performance. From his first scene forward, this dude is not doing an impression of Shatner. He is doing young Kirk. He doesn’t have the slow delivery mannerisms of Shatner but it’s totally James T. Kirk, the bravado, the self-assuredness. It’s such a great performance. You can’t take your eyes off the guy. Anytime he’s not on the screen you’re waiting for him to get back. And the chick [Zoe Saldana] who plays Uhura is really great. They made Uhura really interesting

TrekMovie - Shatner: Nobody Offered Me A Role
September 18, 2008
Recently JJ Abrams kicked off a lot of buzz when he revealed that there was a scene in the new Star Trek movie written for Shatner, but said it didn’t meet with Shatner’s ‘no cameo’ requirements. Today William Shatner launched his new ‘Shatner Project’ video blog and one of the first videos is a direct reply to the latest from Star Trek’s director.
Shatner’s new message for JJ
For the video-challenged Shatner made it clear that he was not offered a role, but still wont take a cameo. Speaking directly to Abrams Shatner stated:JJ, nobody every came to me and said ‘we have a cameo.’ Maybe you wrote it, but it never presented itself to me. But the truth is I wouldn’t have wanted to do a cameo, because that you would have clipped that out. It doesn’t fit. You said in your statement you were having trouble fitting it in anyway. But nobody every asked me and I am just sorry that I am not in your wonderful movie and I would have loved to have been in it.
But he isn’t giving up…he is now talking about the sequel. Shatner went on…If you make another one maybe you can think of ways of bringing Captain Kirk back to life. I brought him back to life in one of my books, very easily. You know the machine where you suck in air with the molecules where Captain Kirk hovers and you reassemble from the molecular…and then you throw the switch on the right and then you throw the one on the left and out comes Captain Kirk reassembled. We’ve got DNA of 160 million years old and we’re trying to right now with our primitive — we’re are not talking about 2300 now, we are talking about 2008. We are trying to assemble the DNA of a 160 million year old being. And I think we can do it. You don’t think you can get Captain Kirk back to life?
Anyone still think this is all some kind of publicity stunt?

/Film - Star Trek Updates: Running Time, Trailer and More
uesday, October 14th, 2008
We haven’t updated Star Trek in a while, so lets get to it. During a recent online chat with The Guardian, director JJ Abrams was asked why he got involved in the film. And I think his answer says a lot about what we should expect from the final film: “It didn’t feel like a classic reboot or prequel. It is a brand new thing inspired by characters that are poised to make a big comeback.”
J Abrams insists that the film’s running time won’t be much longer than 120 minutes, ranting to MTV that he’s “sick of these two hours and forty-five minute movies.”
Abrams also claims that when he showed Simon Pegg (who plays Scotty in the film) the trailer on his iPhone at Comic Con, the actor “started weeping.” It should be disclosed that the man was also plastered. But what I’m wondering is, if Abrams had a finished trailer on his iPhone at Comic Con, why weren’t the fans shown anything? I thought the reason given back then was “nothing was finished enough to show”…
Trek Movie is reporting that the first trailer will hit theaters in November, possibly attached to a non Paramount film like Sony’s Quantum of Solace.

Bonus Question on Kirk’s Shirt
TrekMovie: Regarding the other pictures, there has been a lot of questions about how Kirk is never seen in a gold shirt, will we see him in the gold?
Orci: That is a big question. We have given it a lot of thought.
Kurtzman: It is not a random thing. There is a reason his shirt is the color that it is.
Är förresten han längst till vänster på bild 1 Chekov?

Star Trek’s time-travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film’s heroes. From there, the film then brings Kirk and Spock center stage and tracks the origins of their friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. In fact, the movie shows how the whole original series crew came together: McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoë Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin). The adventure stretches from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Nimoy appearing in scenes with at least one of the actors on our cover — and maybe both. The storytelling is newbie-friendly, but it slyly assimilates a wide range of Trek arcana, from doomed Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to Sulu’s swordsmanship to classic lines like, ”I have been, and always shall be, your friend.” More ambitiously, the movie subversively plays with Trek lore — and those who know it. The opening sequence, for example, is an emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ”Heresy!” But revisionism anxiety is the point. ”The movie,” Lindelof says, ”is about the act of changing what you know.”

I saw four scenes from Star Trek this morning!! I'm finding it really hard to be articulate here because my head is still spinning. J.J. presented the scenes to a four hundred strong audience of distribution folk and online press. A bundle of pride and excitement, he gave spirited introductions to each clip with his usual combination of nervous energy and sharp wit.
The third clip featured a certain Caledonian engineer's first appearance in the movie and J.J. pulled me up to say a few words/gush like a fool, before it ran. I was somewhat geek happy and slightly disoriented from the first two clips and the trailer (which was shown first and premieres to the world imminently) and was consequently a little breathless and lost for words. I basically expressed how incredible it was, as a fan of Star Trek, to be witnessing my own contribution to the series and what an extraordinary experience it was, as an actor, to interact with characters I have known for thirty years.
The scenes I saw were dazzling and seeing Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho and Zoe Saldana in action, confirmed my initial suspicions that they have utterly inhabited the characters originally brought to life by that wonderful and famous cast.
One particular action sequence was so tense and exciting, by the end of it, I felt as though I had watched an entire movie. It's been four hours since the lights came up and I feel as though I am still sat in the auditorium with my mouth hanging open and my eyes glassy and wide. I am beyond excited for this film and now officially, inordinately proud.
Can't wait for you to see it.
Live long and prosper...

Empire: Movie News - Exclusive: Klingon Subplot Revealed
JJ Abrams on Star Trek storyline
Earlier in the week we brought you news of the first screening of Star Trek footage (read all about that here) - but now we've got exclusive, red-hot news from director JJ Abrams himself about an entire excised subplot involving everyone's favourite knobbly nutters, the Klingons.
"There was a big Klingon subplot in this," Abrams told us, "and we actually ended up having to pull it out because it confused the story in a way that I thought was very cool but unnecessary. So we have these beautiful designs that we’re going to have to wait and do elsewhere I guess."
Already: a reason to buy the DVD! So why the pointy eared Romulans over the forehead-tastic Klingons? "The Romulans were … what was interesting to me was that it wasn’t the Klingons. That’s what you expect and it was fun to use the Romulans the way we did. Part of the fact is that they hadn’t seen them for so many years, so that it immediately breaks, for anyone who knows, the rules of Trek to start the movie and have Romulans crossing paths with Starfleet. It jumps in breaking the rules, which I think is kind of fun."
"That’s not to say it’s not explained and it’s not consistent with canon, given our story," Abrams assured us, "but it felt like we had seen so many iterations of Klingons done that this felt like a way to do something in the familiar vernacular but not so familiar that it felt overdone."
That said, the Klingons do have a presence in Star Trek. "You will see Klingon Warbirds in the movie. Maybe not in the way you expect, but you will see them," teases Abrams. Warbirds, for those of you who avoid Trek, are Klingon battle cruisers, ie spaceships. And it's good news for the world's Klingon speakers, who will have something to speculate about at their next bat'leth tournament.
Star Trek is out on May 8 next year, but check back here on Monday for more very exciting Trek news.
