Den som lever får se.Cruise-United Artists Dealing With WGA - Slice of SciFi
Taking a page out of David Letterman’s strategy play-book, Tom Cruise and his United Artists (UA) studio are trying to work out a separate deal with the Writers Guild of America (WGA), side-stepping the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s United Artists is talking with union leaders to bring striking Hollywood writers back to work at the film studio, according to a recent announcement from the Bloomberg press agency.
UA wants to have a deal similar to the one David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants production company got at the end of December that would allow writers to come back to work on film projects for Cruise and his studio, bringing back lots of laid-off workers, allowing them to safely and legally cross picket-lines.
A former attorney for the WGA indicated that if a successful agreement can be ironed out between Cruise’s studio and the WGA, then it won’t be long before other independent and smaller studios begin lining up to foster their own arranagements with the Guild, virtually closing out all the larger AMPTP studios and networks. If the UA talks are successful, MGM, the majority owner and strong member of the AMPTP, would not be included in the negotiations. Cruise’s stake in UA is as an independent producer and owner, which gives him the ability, like Letterman, to forge his own deals.
“An agreement with a significantly sized company like UA shows very powerfully that what the Guild is asking for in new media is achievable,” Jonathan Handel, the former counsel, said.

Manusstrejk drabbar svenska kanaler

employees that the network could save up to $50 million each year by not producing pilots.
NBC, though, is considering making the cuts permanent. Zucker says the cost of pilots has increased dramatically in recent years, making the process a high-risk, low-reward endeavor for the network. NBC typically only orders five or six new shows each year from a crop of 15 to 20 pilots.

SuperHeroHype.Com - Marvel Studios and WGA Sign Interim Agreement!
Source: Marvel Studios, WGA on January 24, 2008
Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announced today that they have reached an interim comprehensive agreement that will put writers immediately back to work on the Marvel Studios development slate. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"We're very excited about our summer releases, 'Iron Man' and 'The Incredible Hulk,' and look forward to resuming work with writers on our future projects including 'Captain America,' 'Thor,' 'Ant-Man,' and 'The Avengers,'" said Marvel Studios Chairman David Maisel.
"Marvel Studios' signing of an interim agreement with the Writers Guild is more good news for our membership," said WGAE President Michael Winship and WGAW President Patric M. Verrone. "Marvel is committed to fairly compensating their writers and now they can move forward with their planned production schedule."
Marvel Studios recently launched its independent live-action film studio to develop, produce, and fully finance Marvel movies, which will include two of this summer's most anticipated releases - Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Directed by Jon Favreau, Iron Man will be released by Paramount Pictures on May 2, 2008, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow. The Incredible Hulk, which will be released by Universal Pictures on June 13, 2008, is directed by Louis Leterrier and stars Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, and William Hurt.
In cooperation with other studios, Marvel previously produced a long succession of hits, including the "Spider-Man," "X-Men," and "Fantastic Four" franchises, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil.
The WGA recently entered into interim agreements with The Weinstein Company, United Artists, Lionsgate, Worldwide Pants, Spyglass Entertainment, MRC, Jackson Bites, Mandate Films, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.
EDIT:
- Källa: Mania.ComLionsgate also made an interim deal with the guild late last night, giving them the clear to go ahead with future project development. Again, the WGA issued another statement after the contract was signed.
"We are pleased Lionsgate has joined the growing number of companies that have signed interim agreements with the Writers Guild," said Patric M. Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, West, and Michael Winship, president of the Writers Guild of America, East, in a joint statement. "Lionsgate is considered a leader in the industry, and its signing an interim agreement again confirms that it is possible for both writers to be compensated fairly and respectfully for their work and for companies to operate profitably."

TheBadAndUgly.Com - Grammys Get WGA Deal
Tuesday, 29 January, 2008
It was only a matter of time before the WGA noticed that, if they killed the Grammys like they horribly shamed the Golden Globes, only the music industry would be really pissed at them.
“Professional musicians face many of the same issues that we do concerning fair compensation for the use of their work in new media,” Patric M. Verrone, president of the guild’s West Coast branch, said in a statement.
We’re all trying to make money off the internet here, that’s no reason to screw an entire awards ceremony just because one of the AMPTP companies may make a marginal amount of money broadcasting an awards show that most people haven’t sat all the way through for years.
Giving the Grammys Feburary 10th broadcast a go ahead and not mentioning any advancement with the Oscar Ceremony waiver also means that half-a-dozen scared editors are locked in a studio somewhere, right now, trying to cobble together long clip-shows of the past videotaped Oscar ceremonies just in case.
Without writers also means with a picket line f you don’t get the go-ahead from the WGA, so if Oscar wants to throw a party, they can cry if they want to, but SAG and WGA members will not be crossing any lines.

Question: I hear that the strike is over! Is it true?— Danouk
Ausiello: Nothing's official, but the buzz is that a tentative agreement has been reached, with an announcement coming as early as tomorrow. But it's hard to tell what's solid intel and what's just spin. To wit: In the past 24 hours, one source close to the negotiations insisted that talk of a resolution was way premature. "There's no deal," maintained my spy. "That's just misinformation put out by the AMPTP to pressure the WGA." But moments before I put this column to bed, I heard from another very plugged-in source that the deal is done. Short story shorter: There's cause for optimism, but not celebration. Yet.

Mania - WGA/AMPTP Deal Needs Approval
It really does look like it will be over soon if all goes as planned. The latest press release from Reuters, which I'll place below, says Hollywood studios and writers have agreed to a new deal but the language inside the contract needs to be hammered out before traveling to the desks of union leaders for approval.
Here's the latest press announcement from Reuters
Negotiators for Hollywood studios and striking writers have agreed to terms of a new contract that could be presented to union leaders in days and, if approved, end their three-month-old labor clash later this week, two sources told Reuters on Monday.
While the outlines of an accord were reached over the weekend, the two sides still need to hammer out contract language before a deal is submitted for approval to the governing boards the East and West Coast branches of the Writers Guild of America, they said.
Those sources, who were briefed on the status of talks but were not authorized to speak publicly about them under a media blackout, said negotiators hoped action by the WGA boards on a deal could come as early as Friday.
An endorsement by WGA leaders presumably would be accompanied by a decision to call off the strike, but if the WGA boards were divided, the walkout might continue pending a ratification vote by rank-and-file members.
One source said the big breakthrough in the latest round of talks, which began January 23, came on the key sticking point of how much writers should be paid for advertising-supported Internet "streaming" of television shows.
That source also characterized the writers' agreement in principle as an improvement over the terms of an earlier, separate contract deal for Hollywood directors that helped pave the way for studios and the WGA to resume bargaining after weeks of stalemate.
"They reached agreement on the major terms, and now its a question of reducing it to (contract) language, which we're all hoping goes well and continues in the same spirit of progress that the talks have experienced so far," he said.
He cautioned, however, that the process of translating a deal into contract language has led to snags in previous labor negotiations.
