Trekweb - J.J. Abrams Says New Star Trek Movie is Not a Complete Re-Imagining
18 November 2008
seenit.co.uk posted a new interview with Star Trek director J.J. Abrams, conducted during the presentation of 25 minutes of footage from the movie in London last week, in which he describes the new movie as more of a "re-invigoration" than a reboot. Here aree few excerpts of the article."The idea is really to re-introduce these characters in a different way, but they are the characters from the original Star Trek. It's not a complete re-imagining... I figure if you re-imagine something you should just imagine something else"
"I think the idea was really to show this movie as an origin story and be as connected to reality as possible, not just this inside joke that people who have seen the other ten movies will get"
Abrams also praised The Wrath of Khan as his favorite Star Trek movie saying "I think it has to be the one that I've always liked the most. It stayed with me even when I was a kid and it first came out. There are moments that were just kind of indelible."
"That humans will not only survive but actually thrive and collaborate with other species. The notion of the final frontier in space exploration is so silly and clichéd in so many people's minds, but when you actually stop to consider that Star Trek is, whilst a fantasy, our future.
"I love what Roddenberry was doing and I'm proud to continue that spirit as opposed to doing Star Trek: The Dark Years. Which, by the way, I'm sure would be hugely entertaining and wildly profitable."

The Hollywood Reporter - Star Trek engages promo drive
Nov 21, 2008
Full-scale campaign rolls out six months ahead of release.
Paramount already has hit warp speed with its high-profile relaunch of the Star Trek franchise.
For its first 2009 tentpole, the studio has taken the unprecedented step of rolling out a full-scale promotional tour of the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek nearly six months before its May 8 release.
Despite Trek's indisputable cultural brand and avid fan base, the filmmakers and the studio hope to bypass two potential obstacles on the way to blockbuster boxoffice returns: the MySpace generation's unfamiliarity with the series and genre and the franchise's typically anemic performance in the global market.
"Star Trek, especially in the foreign territories, is perceived as one thing," Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter. "Paramount thought it was really important to get it out there and show them that it's another."
On Wednesday, Abrams made a good-natured, enthusiastic, 25-minute presentation to a crowd of invited journalists, executives and studio employees in a theater on the Paramount lot. With requisite introductions, Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore and Abrams showcased the new trailer and four distinct sequences from the movie. In the past week, the Trek roadshow had traveled to Rome; Cologne, Germany; Madrid; Paris; London; and New York.
Teaser trailers for potential summer blockbusters often make their first appearances a year in advance; a Trek teaser was paired with this past summer's tentpoles. But any real footage or extended trailers typically are reserved to make a big splash with an airing during something like the Super Bowl in February.
Yet here was Abrams -- who's made it his modus operandi to work under cloaks of invisibility and silence -- putting not only himself but also his actors and film in the spotlight far in advance of the movie's opening.
Since Paramount pushed back the Trek release from its original 2008 holiday date, the director had the advantage of finishing his movie early, unusual for rush-to-the-deadline summer tentpoles. So extensive footage -- including action sequences, ILM magic and even a Kirk bar fight -- are available to preview.
Even so, Abrams admits that the front-loaded schedule was not his initial instinct.
"But I also appreciated Paramount's argument about it," he said. "Ultimately, the movie does the bulk of the work, for good or bad. And I felt that we had an opportunity to give people a taste of what's to come that would really help us. Though my tendency is to keep things quiet, I thought that this was, given the way Trek is perceived, especially overseas, this was something that could help us overcome that stigma."
He and Paramount have a point. The foreign take on any one of the previous 10 Trek films never amounted to more than 37% of the worldwide total. The top-grossing entry, 1996's Star Trek: First Contact, beamed up only $146 million in total, with $54 million coming from foreign markets.
The new Trek trailer debuted in front of Quantum of Solace, which hit theaters Nov. 14, while TV spots ran during this week's episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Fringe, the Fox show created by Abrams and Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
But there still is the danger of enthusiasm peaking too early, with plot points and chatter filling the Web waves months beforehand.
Abrams is aware of the risk.
"Jaws was a book before it was a movie, and people knew what happened to the Titanic," he added. "You can argue that for some of the most successful movies ever, it wasn't that their stories were secret, it's that the experience was fun or a thrill. So I'm praying that we're not going to blow it by revealing some of the secrets, but you can't have it both ways -- you can't show the footage to try and make people understand and not give away something."
"The good news is, there's so much that we're not saying. I think that the risk is ultimately worth it."
Paramount leads summer 2009 with Trek, followed by Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen in late June and G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra in August. The studio has a lot riding on its Trek reboot but can take some comfort in the fact that Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci scared up $395 million worldwide for Paramount in 2006 with their Mission: Impossible III.
But now that the Klingon is out of the bag, where do the filmmakers go from here?
"Oh, there's a whole crazy campaign that is going to ...," Abrams said, trailing off. "It's insane. We have a life-size Enterprise, but I'm not allowed to talk about it."

Star Trek in IMAX | /Film
FirstShowing is reporting that JJ Abrams’ Star Trek will be converted for IMAX theaters when it is released on May 8th 2009. But with Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, also an IMAX release, due only two weeks later, Trek won’t have too much time on the huge screen. And I don’t expect any special features to be announced (for instance, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is expected to have more than 20 minutes in 3D, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen shot some action sequences using IMAX cameras) but Trek might be worth seeing in IMAX regardless. Especially with the big space battles which might out-Star Wars Star Wars.
I’m usually not a fan of the IMAX up-conversions, and in a post Dark Knight world, it almost seems like a rip off, but I have been reading up on the process and I’m starting to drink the kool aid. The up-conversion process eliminates additional film grain which is common in film print reproduction, providing an image much closer to the original negative. Also, the IMAX sound system is obviously much better. Just don’t sit too close.

Cinematical - "New" Star Trek Trailer
Nov 25th 2008
A new trailer for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek has just debuted over at AICN [480, 720, 1080], but be warned that it's exactly like the other trailer save for one particular scene that comes right at the end. Yup, I won't tell you exactly what happens, but one look at the image above and you can imagine what you'll see. This particular scene was part of the four Cinematical screened last week, and it takes place on the icy planet where Kirk (Chris Pine) gets sent to. It's there where he meets an older version of Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy) and a younger version of Scotty (Simon Pegg).

"My name is James Tiberius Kirk!" ""Buckle up!", "Are you afraid or aren't you", "Why don't you make me?" Urk...
Star Trek... now with Hot Babes undressing!

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry in Star Trek | /Film
Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, will reprise her role as the voice of the Starship Enterprise computer in JJ Abrams‘ Star Trek. A classy move. Majel Barrett has appeared in every incarnation of the popular science fiction series and is sometimes referred to as “the First Lady of Star Trek”. In addition to appearing on screen in various different capacities, Majel also provided the voice of starship onboard computers for The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, most of the Star Trek films and computer games.
