SyFy Portal \ Kevin Smith To Direct 'Battlestar Galactica'
It might not be "Clerks" or even "Dogma," but Silent Bob actor Kevin Smith is getting what might be almost a dream come true.
Smith, one of the more high-profile defenders of "Battlestar Galactica," will direct an episode of the show during the show's final season. The details were shared with Angel Cohen on AOL, and will mark the third television series Smith will be involved with this coming season.
"I know that I'm going to go up and direct an episode of 'Battlestar Galactica,' which I am kind of stoked about," Smith told Cohn. "It's cool, but it is scary because it is like, 'What the fuck? I can't bring anything to that show.'"
Don't expect to see anything wacky or outright different in terms of cinematography, however, as Smith said he knows how true to form the SciFi Channel show likes to be.
"That show is genius and they have a very distinctive visual style," he said. "But you are safe as a kitten. If you go in there and say, 'I"m going to shoot everything in one big master shot,' they'll go, 'No you're not, because that is not what we do on 'Battlestar Galactica.'
"I guess it is more about performance-oriented stuff, but at the same time that cast is top-notch. How do you fucking direct Mary McDonnell?"
It's not clear what episode Smith will direct, but now that the cast is about halfway through the final season on the production cycle, it likely will be an episode found late in the show's final season, which begins early next year.
Smith has been busy so far this television season. He directed the pilot of The CW series "Reaper" and also will write and direct the first episode of "Heroes: Origins," the mid-season spinoff series of NBC's hit show "Heroes."
Smith is well known for his character of Silent Bob, but also for writing and directing such movies as "Clerks" and "Dogma" as well as "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back." He has filled in for film critic Roger Ebert on "Ebert & Roeper," and has released some of his convention panel talks where he gives frank insight on film and television, straight to DVD.
"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with the telemovie "Razor" before debuting its fourth and final season in early 2008.

Kevin Smith.

Battlestar Galactica -And The Winning Razor Cover Art Is...
A few weeks ago Universal and the Sci Fi Channel announced a poll that would allow fans to choose which of three covers would become the front of the box for December 4th release of Battlestar Galactica - Razor on DVD. The following day the voting got under way, and the three choices were revealed to fans.
Today the results came in, and the winning cover was choice "B", seen below. This is the same shot as used in the poll, not Universal's final package graphic. When that comes in, we'll provide you with a hi-res shot. Hopefully by then the studio will have listened to fan complaints that the correct number on the seal should be "62", the correct BattleStar Group number for the Pegasus (whose history is examined in this production), rather than the Galactica's "75".

SyFy Portal \ 'Caprica' Series Sees New Life
The story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the "Battlestar Galactica" telemovie "Razor."
Don't write off the prequel spinoff series to "Battlestar Galactica" just yet.
TV Week's James Hibberd says SciFi Channel executives may not be so quick to cast off "Caprica" as they consider actually moving forward to film a backdoor pilot, and follow the BSG telemovie "Razor" to almost instant DVD release.
Talk of reviving "Caprica" comes from a lot of concern from SciFi Channel executives that they'll be losing "Battlestar" showrunner Ronald D. Moore to NBC and the silver screen, and giving "Caprica" a greenlight could at least keep some of the bridges built between Moore and SciFi Channel.
"Especially if the similarly conceived standalone 'Razor' performs strongly, the thinking seems to be that a two-hour 'Caprica' pilot could justify its expense," Hibberd said. "Worse-case scenario: The pilot is aired and sold as a DVD, recouping some costs. If the pilot is strong, then the network has a new series."
Since SciFi Channel announced the possible spinoff nearly two years ago, "Caprica" has sat in development hell. Meant to take place about 40 years before the events that started the new "Battlestar Galactica" series, the show was intended to focus on the Adama clan -- led by William Adama's attorney father, Joseph -- and the early rise of the Cylons.
Some aspects of "Razor" was meant to dip back 40 years as well to the original Cylon war , aspects which will now be broadcast as "mini-sodes," but reintegrated into the telemovie on the DVD release in November.
Before the network can move on to another series, however, there is still a lot of question over whether or not SciFi Channel will split the final season of "Battlestar Galactica," but network executives have apparently admitted the reasons behind the move are financial.
"Since 'Battlestar' eats a considerable portion of the SciFi programming budget, the network might be forced to spread the resulting product across two seasons," Hibberd said.
Moore, however, is unfazed by when the episodes air.
"It doesn't affect my job either way since we're shooting it straight through," he said before Sunday's Emmy awards. "It might be better to get it all done [in the same year] for the fans so they don't have to wait."
"Battlestar Galactica" returns in November with the telemovie "Razor," and then will air its fourth and final season beginning in early 2008.
