Bryan Singer on Superman Sequel, "I’m going to take a brief pause."
Even when you ask Bryan Singer outright whether he will be returning to do the next Superman sequel, he STILL won't answer directly...
Whether you want him back or not, Bryan Singer's name still keeps popping up as the possible director for the next Superman movie. Credited as the best X-Men movie director, many fans trashed his first effort at the man of steel saying "Superman Returns" was too full of angst and devoid of action.
While many reports talk of Warner Bros wanting to take a different and darker tact with the Superman franchise, and also liking the idea of dumping the last movie in favor of a reboot, other insiders still say Singer is involved. To clarify the matter, intrepid reporters at MTV asked him outright whether he was doing the deed, and here's what they got...
"At the moment I can’t really talk about that," said Singer. "I wish I could. From my perspective I’m going to take a brief pause. ["Valkyrie"] has taken a long time so I’m going to take a pause. A movie like that takes some time to do right. That’s all I can say about that."
Slippery little bugger isn't he?
So, to sum up, we basically STILL don't know whether he is involved or not.

/Film - Bryan Singer Not Involved in Superman Sequel Talks
Thursday, December 4th, 2008
UGO got a chance to grill Bryan Singer about his involvement with a new Superman film. Unfourtunately, his answer is somewhat cryptic.
UGO: Are you officially involved in this talk of the new film?
BS: I am not officially involved in the talk, no.
UGO: But when talk happens they’ll call you.
BS: Well it’s, you know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it’s just the way things work out.
UGO: But you are not divorced from Superman at this point.
BS: No.
From what I can gather, Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures/DC Comics are having preliminary discussions about a new Superman film, but Singer is not involved in those talks. I know the consensus behind the scenes is that Singer shouldn’t direct the next film, and there has even been talk of a complete reboot. I have heard rumors that Singer has a stipulation in his Superman Returns contract that forces Warner Bros to go to him first before seeking other directors. I’ve never been able to confirm this. I am actually one of the few who actually dug Singer’s Superman, and would be very interested to see him go all Wrath of Kahn with Man of Steel (as Singer once put it). But I just don’t think its going to happen. I think Warner Bros will eventually talk Singer into an producer role so that both sides don’t loose face. But we’ll see.

Splash Page » Lex Luthor Not Returning For ‘Superman Returns’ Sequel?
Perhaps an atomic non-story today, rumors have popped up that Lex Luthor may be out as the main villain for the potential sequel to “Superman Returns” (possibly titled “Man of Steel”).
The arch-nemesis of the Last Son of Krypton, most recently played by Kevin Spacey, may not be the one Supes has to worry about when Kal-El comes back to the big screen, according to The Latino Review.
“Writers have been told to come in to the studio to pitch a story with a new villain but again, the WB hasn’t bit on anything they heard yet,” claims the website’s writer “El Mayimbe,” citing anonymous sources inside Warner Bros.
The villain swap strategy has worked for the Batman film franchise, producing back-to-back blockbusters, but it’s worth noting that actor Gene Hackman played Luthor through all but one of the Christopher Reeve “Superman” films. Back in August, Spacey told MTV that his interest in returning to the Lex Luthor role remains high, and that he hopes to “do a second one if they pull it off.”
If the studio did avoid Luthor in a “Superman” sequel, however, the move would throw the door wide open for a fleet of Earthly and cosmic baddies from the hero’s rogues gallery. Anyone from Doomsday (who most recently appeared in the Superboy-themed “Smallville” television series) to Darkseid could be fair game. Terence Stamp’s General Zod became a cult icon in 1978’s “Superman,” so a conservative studio pick could revive the Kryptonian criminal for a new audience.
Exciting leftfield picks, however, could include malevolent nutjobs like the Ultra-Humanite, Mongul or Metallo. An even more adventurous pick could nab a Superman lookalike such as Bizarro, Eradicator or Cyborg Superman — all of whom would likely get film-going fanboys into theaters.

Dock så låter det ju intressant, då det verkar som om att Luthor kanske inte blir skurken ändå.

Ain't It Cool
Ballack has been a reliable and constant source of geek rumor news online for many sites, including AICN. This time he's come in with a big one. Now, these are the sorts of rumors that only time confirms, because when you contact folks involved, you get non-denial denials - and no comments. The reason is this. Until paperwork is signed and sealed, these are musings of history... Moments where this is what is going on behind the scenes - but let's see if they make their way to being more than musings, but actual reality. There was a segment on Ninja Assassin a film being directed by James McTeigue and being produced by Hollywood heavy weight Joel Silver. McTeigue spoke about filming in Germany and the many highlights of shooting in a huge city like Berlin. The interviewer spoke about future plans and James spilled the following tidbets!
/.../
BRACE YOURSELVES FOR THIS.
- McTeigue confirmed that Plastic Man was the next project in the pipeline for the Wachowski's and he had been signed on to provide Second Unit support. Says the movie has been delayed indefinitely due to a major shake up of projects at WB.
- Bryan Singer has refused to undertake a re-boot of the Superman franchise and has left the Executives at WB with no choice but to take a fresh creative direction.
This is it.
- He stated the Wachowski Brothers had been approached to re-boot the franchise as a trilogy and they are currently reviewing their options as its like being asked to take the final play in a superbowl final. Says if they do agree, he will likely either succumb to providing second unit support on the movie or will champion the directorship of Plastic Man - He started to giggle as he stated its like a young child for the Brothers and they wont give that up easily.
- Says, the very thought of the brothers making a Superman movie is unbelievable as they have grown up in the world of comic books and they would be ideal for the project.
- Stated that Bryan Singer is looking to move on to Logan's Run a movie to be produced by Joel Silver.
Hope i have remembered everything.
Good luck in the future guys.
Ballack.

Exclusive: Superman Returns Sequel To Be Titled Superman Unleashed? | /Film
/Film reader Alex L just sent me a link to a password protected page from the official Legendary Pictures website that lists “Superman Unleashed” as one of their upcoming films in development. The temporary plot synopsis included follows:
“Ramping up the action of its esteemed predecessor, the sequel to ‘Superman Returns’ promises to raise the stakes and take the audience to heights of action that no other superhero movie can achieve.”
So there you have it… Legendary Pictures, Warner Bros and DC are still working on a Superman Returns sequel, and not a complete reboot. The film will not be titled The Man of Steel, but instead Superman Unleashed.
One of my other sources claims that the title is just a working title and they are still hearing pitches from different writers.

Warner Bros. and DC Comics Win Superman Case
Source:Variety
July 8, 2009
Variety reports that Warner Bros. and DC Comics have won a favorable ruling in the suit filed by the heirs of "Superman" co-creator Jerome Siegel. Here are some excerpts from the ruling:
In a decision announced Wednesday, U.S. Judge District Court Judge Stephen G. Larson found that the license fees the studio paid to corporate sibling DC Comics didn't represent "sweetheart" deals as they weren't below fair market value. That means the heirs will be able seek profits only from DC Comics -- which earned $13.6 million from Warner Bros. for the 2006 release of "Superman Returns" -- rather than from Warner Bros. as well.
The judge, who conducted a 10-day bench trial, also noted that Warner Bros. chairman Alan Horn had testified that he hopes to make another "Superman" movie but added that the property wasn't under development at the studio, that no script had been written and that the earliest another "Superman" pic could be released would be in 2012.
Toberoff also asserted in a written statement that the Siegel heirs and the heirs of co-creator Joe Shuster will own the entire Superman copyright in 2013.
"The Court pointedly ruled that if Warner Bros. does not start production on another Superman film by 2011, the Siegels will be able to sue to recover their damages," Toberoff added.

To put this in further perspective, the entire accounting action pales in comparison to the fact that in 2013, the Siegels, along with the estate of Joe Shuster, will own the entire original copyright to Superman, and neither DC Comics nor Warner Bros. will be able to exploit any new Superman works without a license from the Siegels and Shusters."
DC och WB får fortsätta att öppna plånboken.

This means the Siegels -- repped by Marc Toberoff of Toberoff & Associates -- now control depictions of Superman's origins from the planet Krypton, his parents Jor-El and Lora, Superman as the infant Kal-El, the launching of the infant Superman into space by his parents as Krypton explodes and his landing on Earth in a fiery crash.
DC owns other elements like Superman's ability to fly, the term kryptonite, the Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen characters, Superman's powers and expanded origins.
In a statement, Warner Bros. and DC said, "Warner and DC Comics are pleased that the court has affirmed that the vast majority of key elements associated with the Superman character that were developed after Action Comics No. 1 are not part of the copyrights that the plaintiffs have recaptured and therefore remain solely owned by DC Comics."
Filmrättigheterna går så härna.
The Schuster estate originally did not participate with the Siegels' case because Schuster has no spouse or children. But his estate later won a ruling of a recapture identical to the Siegels, which will be effective in 2013. At that point, the Siegels and Schusters will own the entire copyright to Action Comics No. 1. That will give them the chance to set up Superman pics, TV shows and other projects at another studio.
If they want to get a new "Superman" or even "Justice League" pic featuring the superhero, Warner Bros. and DC will be forced to go into production by 2011.
