WGA Reaches Tentative Deal with AMPTP

Just when we were convincing ourselves that we really could get into a TV schedule comprised of nothing but Paradise Hotel 2, Big Brother and cooking shows, the WGA has reached a tentative deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. At 3 am Saturday morning (god bless the morning people!), the union's East and West Coast presidents zapped off emails to their membership stating that a deal has been made through 2011 that "protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery."

Key among the new pact's points of interest is the 2 percent of the distributor's gross receipts that writers will receive when their TV/movie work is reused online. Until the ink dries, I won't say it outloud, but I will quietly type it: "Yippee!"

Check back later this weekend and often for updates on the actual WGA vote.

Är strejken över nu?

After the Strike: When Your Favorites Will Return!

At long last, a strike chart you can get excited about!

With an end to the three-month-old WGA strike imminent (yay!), the networks have quietly begun outlining plans to salvage what's left of the current TV season. At the same time, I've been quietly picking at my moles to get a preview of those plans — the results of which appear in chart form below.

Keep in mind that the following information remains extremely tentative and is subject to change (and probably will). In other words, I strongly suggest you refresh your browser at least once an hour to ensure that you're getting the most up-to-date scoop possible.

CinemaSpy - AMPTP and SAG Break Off Talks

Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Various -- The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) have dissolved talks with one another, with the former claiming that SAG is making "unreasonable" demands asking for higher fees from DVD sales and electronic content.

Hope remains that the two organizations may still reach an agreement before the end of their contract June 30.

Talks begin Wednesday with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a smaller union which represents many of the same actors.

It has a deal for daytime TV programming and is negotiating a deal on prime-time TV shows such as Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rules of Engagement, Cashmere Mafia and Til Death.

"With SAG's continued adherence to unreasonable demands in both new and traditional media, continuing negotiations at this time does not make sense," the AMPTP said in a prepared statement.

However, the producers did say they'd be willing to return to the bargaining table at a later date. The statement echoes the same line the AMPTP used when dealing with Hollywood scriptwriters late last year. Writers struck for 100 days in an acrimonious and protracted contest over compensation for new media distribution. Both sides finally reached a satisfactory accord.

SAG called the end of bargaining "unfortunate," saying it had made significant concessions.

"We're trying to get the deal done and we're not the ones who walked away," said Doug Allen, SAG executive director.

Tror det fixar sig. Inte en chans att de vill ha en till strejk nu, inga av sidorna. Screen Actors Guild var ju svårt drabbade under förra strejken.

Mania - Possible SAG Strike Fall Out Details

Date: Friday, June 13, 2008
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

A few months ago----after weeks of back and forth between both sides----the WGA and AMPTP found a way to resolve their issues and the show went on. But now, we're heading back into those murky waters of "what could be" in terms of the near future if the SAG doesn't resolve their own contract before the July deadline.

In anticipation of what could happen, should a SAG strike occur, The Hollywood Reporter has put out two articles listing which movies and which television shows could have issues.

For Movies:

DreamWorks is wrapping both John Hamburg's "I Love You, Man" and Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones" this week, while Paramount is aiming to finish principal photography during in the next two weeks on its untitled Wayans Bros. comedy, "G.I. Joe" and Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island," starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Warners is finishing up shooting on Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant," its Seth Rogen starrer "Observe and Report" and the action pic "Ninja Assassin." Universal is racing the clock on "Land of the Lost," starring Will Ferrell. Disney's "Race to Witch Mountain," "When in Rome" and "High School Musical 3" are on track to be finished by month's end. And Columbia/MGM's latest Bond adventure "Quantum of Silence" is set to wrap next week.

Columbia's "Angels and Demons," the follow-up to "The Da Vinci Code," already was forced to postpone production once when writer Akiva Goldsman could not turn in a script polish during the writers strike. With a release date moved from Dec. 19 to May 15, 2009, the film began shooting this month, with Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard on location in Rome. Crossing its fingers, Columbia is calculating that if a strike does force a shutdown, production can resume in time to make the spring release date.

DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers" sequel is before the cameras in Pennsylvania, with shooting eventually set to move to New Mexico. In the event of a strike, director Michael Bay figures he can shut down principal photography and focus on VFX and second unit work. Halcyon's "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins," which is shooting exteriors in New Mexico now before moving to soundstages next month, is planning a similar strategy if its actors become unavailable.

For TV Shows:

On the series production side, it is ironic that "24" -- the show most impacted by the writers strike as its seventh season was scrapped by Fox -- is the best prepared to weather a SAG strike. With 12 episodes already in the can and the two-hour prequel set to wrap production by month's end, "24" is certain to air a full season.

About two dozen broadcast series -- including "Heroes," "House," "Bones," "My Name Is Earl," "ER," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: NY," "Criminal Minds," "Brothers & Sisters," "Chuck," "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Life" -- will have episodes in the can by July 1 as some stayed in continuous production or resumed shooting quickly because of the fallout of the writers strike. But there will be no finished product of such heavyweights as "Grey's Anatomy," "Desperate Housewives," "CSI: Miami" and "The Office," prompting speculation that networks might consider pushing the start of the 2008-09 season if there is a long SAG strike.

Cable series whose shooting schedules would be disrupted include USA's "The Starter Wife," "Monk," "Psych," "Burn Notice" and "Law & Order: CI," HBO's "Big Love," "Entourage" and "True Blood" and Showtime's "Weeds," "Brotherhood," "Dexter" and "Californication."

Late-night shows, which were hard hit by the writers strike, won't be affected much beyond talent booking, with Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" in best position because they rarely have actors as guests.

Movie & TV News @ IMDb.com - Studio Briefing - 25 June 2008 - Actors' Impasse Could Affect Comic-con

Steven "Frosty" Weintraub, who runs the Collider entertainment website, has warned that if the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are unable to reach an agreement by early next month, actors would likely disappear from the July 24 Comic-Con convention in San Diego. "Most people go to Comic-Con to get a glimpse of some of the biggest actors working in the entertainment industry," Weintraub wrote. "Where else can a fan from Colorado show up and know their favorite actors will be there and they'd actually have a chance to get an autograph or ask them a question?" Weintraub, who says he was a "staunch supporter" of the Writers Guild strike is clearly opposed to the actors' tactics. If the writers and directors were able to work out a deal with the studios, he comments, "I'd like to think [a precedent] has been set over new media money and other residuals." Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday that Jack Nicholson, Viggo Mortensen, Nick Nolte are among some 60 actors who have signed a letter supporting the leadership of the Screen Actors Guild in its effort to persuade members of the American Federation of TV and Radio Artists to vote against the contract with the AMPTP negotiated by their union's leaders.

Is That Your Final Offer? - Slice of SciFi

The clock ticked down to midnight and no last minute, save-the-day deal was forthcoming. In fact, The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) says it has made its final offer to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and there will be nothing new coming any time soon from the producers.

SAG says that the $250 million in additional compensation to the actors in the union simply doesn’t go far enough and that the producers continue to wave off the real issue, which is a meaningful new media compensation package.

Even though today’s last minute negotiations bore no fruit, the actors said through their union reps that they will continue to work under the old existing contract, but wouldn’t indicate just how long they would be willing to do so without a call to strike at some point in the future if things remain deadlocked.

A new meeting has been set for Wednesday, July 2, so that AMPTP reps can explain their $250 million offer in clearer detail, but don’t expect anything new from them to be placed on the table. It will be up to SAG to outright reject the producers’ offer or find a work-a-round solution, or worst-case-scenario — call for a full work stoppage.

For SAG’s part they have stated that before any official statement can come from them a full review of the AMPTP’s 43-page offer must be completed.

Så än så länge har ingen produktion avstannat. Men man vet ju aldrig...
