"It took me ages to get it downloaded, for some reason. Just managed it before lunch and have watched it ten times. To anyone who doesn't think this looks amazing I want to strip you of your MW papers and toss you into the Cursed Earth. Kevin has me all excited about Star Wars, i'm hearing good things about FF and WOTW looks fantastic, but I KNOW this will be my movie of the year. It just drips class from Nolan and Goyer all the way down to the guy who makes the tea.

When I see people complaining about what looks like a Neal Adams comic come to life I can only remember an interview with Tarantino where he said "Fuck those geeks! I'd never make a comic movie because you can NEVER please those fucking guys!" and he's probably right. This looks incredible. Absolutely incredible. And when I read my comments on Superman's neckline being an inch too high I can only shudder and realize Tarantino could have been talking about me too.

I cannot WAIT for Batman Begins. Wish I could see it tonight instead of the shite I've been talked into seeing. How great does The Scarecrow look on the back of thaty horse? How perfect is Bale as Bruce Wayne? The Batmobile having to rocket through a waterfall to get into the cave is just pure zorro. I love this film to bits and I haven't even seen it.

En recension från AICN skriven av "Daffodil 11 "

Caught BATMAN BEGINS the other day, not long after seeing EPISODE 3, and am very pleased to say that if these two film are indicative of the remainder of the US summer season, we are in for one hell of a treat. For those playing at home, HITCHHIKERS was little more than a lightly entertaining canapé and we'll simply forget GLADIATOR 2 and xXx-squared ever happened...

Clearly coming from the Bryan Singer school of super-hero (re)invention, Christopher Nolan's BEGINS presses the worlds biggest Refresh button and allows it's audience to simply forget those mistakes of the past, courtesy of one J. Schumacher.

Working with a tight, dramatic and occasionally fun script co-written with David S Goyer, Nolan manages his successful reinvention by grounding his Gotham in a world of plausibility. Where prior BATMAN films forced viewers to accept the gadgets, car and villains as they are presented on screen, generally with little exposition, BEGINS allows the viewer to enjoy the possibility of a vigilante protecting the night by going a long way to instil credibility and justification to almost the entire film. This doesn't constrict the limitations of the film but allows it to expand by sweeping the audience along with it rather than being left behind saying, "hold on, how did Bruce Wayne manage to manufacture X without anyone asking questions...?"

Performances across the board are great. Stand-outs are a winning, cheeky performance by the now Oscar-knighted Morgan Freeman, a nicely understated and very likable Gary Oldman and, with all due respect to Michael Gough, Michael Caine has become, quite simply, the best-ever Alfred. Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes and Tom Wilkinson are also strong in their roles, while the rest of recognisable Hollywood (Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, Linus Roache, the bad guy from THE SAINT) all pop to lesser and greater degrees and fill out the supporting cast nicely.

In the black suit, Christian Bale does a solid job, best personifying reluctant-Billionaire Wayne when confronted by an enemy at a birthday party and having to force invited guests to leave. While I have admired the skill of Bale since the grossly-overlooked EMPIRE OF THE SUN, I am afraid for me that he was just so good in AMERICAN PSYCHO that that performance spilled over into this film. This is not to say that this is a bad thing, in fact the Bateman (whoa, only 1 letter difference, bizarre) persona seems to suit the cocky Wayne quite well, particularly when Wayne undertakes public misbehaviour in an effort to ensure that people presume that Wayne and Batman are two very different characters. While popular opinion will eventually decide, Goyer & Nolan's script goes a long way in making Bale possibly the best big-screen Batman to-date.

Gotham, the Batmobile, the suit and the gadgets all come together very successfully in this film. Where Burton was limited by the nature of special effects in 1989, Nolan has embraced the possibilities of photo-real effects in BEGINS and managed to create a multi-layered, believable Gotham City. A world away from Schumacher's faux-Versace rooftops, Gotham here (becomes) a decaying, steaming labyrinth of shanty-towns, silver skyscrapers and waterfront industria. The batmobile is at once cool and a lot of fun to watch. I was unconvinced when I saw those 1st pictures, but this machine delivers in a way that renders the previous cars preposterous. The origins of all the Bat-gadgets, as presented by Freeman, allows greater plausibility in the overall picture. Seeing Wayne work with Alfred to put together the bat-suit is a lot of fun, generating some of the film's biggest laughs.

The less you know about the plot, the better. Seamlessly integrating flash-backs with present day, we get to experience Bruce's childhood tragedy with an emotional resonance unseen in prior pictures. Only now do we understand why Bruce felt that he killed his parents, and the spoiled rich-kid self-torture that he gets into, simply to punish himself, leads to his transformation into The Bat perfectly.

This is a very dark, adult picture. The abrasive nature of the editing, both film and sound, recalls last year's BOURNE SUPREMACY in places, and it goes along way toward amping up the thrills. The pic's various set-pieces should have viewers on the edge of their seats, and some of the Scarecrow's hallucinogenic visions will really creep you out.

BATMAN BEGINS is to Batman what EPISODE 3 was to STAR WARS: The long awaited PG-13 version fans have always desired. An unequalled cast, against-type yet visionary director and a script that suggests Goyer is destined for far greater things than his so-far B-grade filmography allow this film to deliver in exciting new ways, raising the bar for all future super-hero pictures. If this is the "new" DC (the snazzy new logo at the front of the film suggests that this is a serious retort to Marvel's uber-successful SPIDER-MAN franchise), then bring on SUPES, WONDERWOMAN (sans Sandy B, please!) and THE FLASH.

BATMAN BEGINS will surely be remembered as one of this year's most exciting and best blockbuster films.

Hollywood Repporters recension

Bottom line: The franchise gets resurrected in this edgy, psychologically shrewd actioner.

The "Batman" film series, launched by Tim Burton in 1989, burned itself out after four pictures because of an overreliance on production design, increasingly campy costumes and mind-numbing action and noise. That any filmmaker could now revive the comic book character and his retro-futuristic world of Gotham City is a minor miracle. But for Christopher Nolan to turn "Batman Begins" into such a smart, gritty, brooding, visceral experience is astonishing. Truly, Batman does begin again.

Nolan's past two films certainly prepared us to expect the unexpected. "Memento" and "Insomnia" were mesmerizing thrillers in which meticulous writing laid the groundwork for complex characterizations, arresting themes and haunting imagery. Nolan now displays an ability to hitch that same intelligence and care to a summer tentpole movie.

Batman has always meant solid boxoffice for Warner Bros. Pictures, and "Batman Begins" will be no exception. How young male fans respond to a slow buildup to the action and the introspective nature of its hero will determine how big this event movie will be. It certainly deserves repeat visits because the carefully laid-in details will more fully emerge with each viewing.

Christian Bale delivers a subtle and engrossing performance as the divided hero, a man torn by guilt, anger and fear, who seeks a way to turn these negative emotions into a positive force for fighting evil. The first half of the film show us, logically and realistically, how the man known as Bruce Wayne came to assume a double life as a wealthy playboy and his alter ego, the dark avenger of the night.

After a black-and-white credit sequence, the movie immediately presents us with Bruce Wayne in two periods of his life: as a tike of 8 about to experience his first brush with fear and the life-altering trauma of witnessing his parents' murders, then as a lost soul in a hellish prison in the Far East. Tormented by the murders of his parents on the streets of Gotham, Bruce has traveled the world to educate himself on the criminal mind.

He is rescued from prison by a mysterious warrior named Ducard (Liam Neeson), who teaches Bruce to master his emotions and gives him the mental and physical discipline to fight his enemies. Eventually, Ducard reveals that he wants Bruce to join the League of Shadows, an underground vigilante movement headed by the stoic Ra's al Ghul (Ken Watanabe). When Bruce refuses to battle evil with evil, he becomes the League's mortal enemy.

Bruce returns home to take up residence in his parents' country manor, with the family's trusted butler Alfred (the always affable Michael Caine) assuming the role of manservant and mentor. Bruce finds his father's once philanthropic Wayne Enterprises now in the hands of a greedy CEO Richard Earle (Rutger Hauer), and Bruce's beautiful childhood friend Rachel (Katie Holmes) has become an assistant D.A.

Gotham is a city with futuristic elements yet bears more than a little resemblance to the Depression Era. (Remember that Batman first appeared in DC Comics in 1939.) The old town is overrun by a crime gang headed by Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson). Seemingly, half the city is on the take. The only apparent honest cop, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman once more disappearing chameleonlike into a role), complains that there is nobody to whom he can rat out the bad guys.

Gradually, Batman, a one-man force for good, comes together. Bruce discovers that Wayne Enterprises' Applied Sciences division, headed by resourceful Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), has developed all the tools he'll need to fight crime. These range from a survival suit of nearly impervious body armor to an indestructible car that becomes the Batmobile. His Batcave turns out to be a literal one, a damp and dark area underneath the southeast wing of his manor where bats roost.

Batman begins his campaign against corruption by striking at the heart of Falcone's criminal empire. But he soon realizes that a more sinister force is moving to destroy Gotham, a force fronted by cunning psychiatrist and medical experimenter Dr. Jonathan Crane (Cillian Murphy) and backed by his old pals with the League of Shadows.

Fights and chases occur in a gloomy, rainy, fear-drenched landscape of urban anarchy. The primary weapon everyone uses is fear. The criminal gang instills such terror in the citizenry that no one fights back. Batman chooses costumes and methods to turn that fear back on the criminals, who must confront a batlike creature they cannot fathom, a foe that vanishes before they land a blow.

Nolan and co-screenwriter David S. Goyer keep things logical and rational despite the story's comic book origins. Batman's heroics are the outgrowth of planning and psychology, not superhuman abilities. Fights are constructed in tight shots and quick edits that explode in rhythmic fury. A car chase looks like something one might catch on local TV news -- except, of course, for the Batmobile's ability to leap from roof to roof.

Similarly, designer Nathan Crowley and cinematographer Wally Pfister create a nightmarish city that reeks of despair. The music credit is shared by two top film composers, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, so it's hard to know whom to blame for its own schizophrenia wherein the major themes are rousing and memorable but the score comes on too strong in many sequences. Lindy Hemming's costumes are striking as they mirror the various strata of society as well as the "uniforms" of the heroes and villains in this alternate reality.

Harry Knowles har sett Batman Begins

http://www.aint-it-c...ay.cgi?id=20395

Några citat från Harry

Here’s a man that could have anything he wanted, could grow up to be anyone he wanted. Instead, he risks life and limb, his very freedom… He risks everything for the single-minded obsession with the ideal that one man can make a difference. And here we see a man bent on saving the city his family helped build and make great from doom.

Many critics are trying to differentiate this film from “those other superhero yarns” by declaring this a real movie. Oh f*ck you, ya pretentious basta*ds! This is a fantastic, spectacularly wonderful film.

http://movies.about....atman061005.htm

Christopher Nolan, David Goyer, Christian Bale, et al have made a deep, meaningful, fully fleshed out film that just happens to be about a comic book superhero. Forget the story’s based on a world created in comic books. This film is able to stand on its own, which makes it especially appealing to moviegoers who don’t know the backstory of Batman, his friends, or his enemies. Yet I’ve heard from some Batman geeks (and I say that with affection – they know who they are) who claim this is the movie Batman fans have been clamoring for.
