Variety - Sony, Paramount financing Tintin
Fri., Oct. 31, 2008
Steven Spielberg directing first film of series.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount Pictures are in talks to co-finance Tintin, Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s digital 3-D pic based on the Belgian Tintin comics.
After resolving the Paramount-DreamWorks divorce, putting together a studio deal for Tintin was next on Spielberg’s agenda. After Universal balked at partnering on what’s hoped to be the first installment in a franchise, with Spielberg to direct, Par offered to fully back the movie with a reduced backend at $135 million for the two gross participants. When the filmmakers held out for a better deal, a partner became a viable alternative.
While neither Sony nor Paramount would comment, both confirmed talks are under way for one film.
Spielberg had hoped to be in production by fall. However, when financing fell apart at U on the eve of the DreamWorks/Par divorce, he lost the participation of his lead actor, Thomas Sangster. Nonetheless, Tintin is expected to be completed in time for a 2010 release. The original plan was for Jackson to direct the sequel.
In the deal being negotiated, Paramount is planning to distribute in North America and some other English-speaking territories, while Sony would handle the foreign release. Tintin would no longer have any association with DreamWorks.
Spielberg and Jackson were originally teaming to direct and produce three consecutive features based on Georges Remi’s beloved comicstrip hero Tintin. Spielberg and Jackson selected three stories from Remi’s The Adventures of Tintin series, which encompassed 23 books published between 1929 and 1976 about an intrepid junior reporter and his dog Snowy, who track down stories to the ends of the Earth.
The director of the third film in the planned trilogy was always up in the air, and a script was never written.
Kathleen Kennedy joins Spielberg and Jackson as a producer on the three films, but the deal under discussion appears to be for the first one.
Tintin has long been a passion project for Spielberg; he and Kennedy have held various film rights to the comedic adventure book series off and on for more than 25 years. Jackson also has long been a fan of the comicbooks. His New Zealand-based Weta Digital, the f/x house behind The Lord of the Rings franchise, produced a 20-minute test reel bringing to life the characters created by Remi, who wrote under the pen name of Herge.
The films are expected to be lensed using photorealistic performance-capture techniques.
With Sony on board and a second Jackson lensed film not yet financed, it is unclear what Weta Digital’s involvement will be on the Tintin franchise.
Jackson has delivered to Paramount his DreamWorks film The Lovely Bones, based on Alice Sebold’s bestseller. It’s set for a fall 2009 release.

Simon Pegg, Nick Frost join 'Tintin' - Entertainment News, Film News, Media - Variety
Pair to play Thompson Twins
LONDON — Brit thesps Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will play the Thompson Twins in Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s two-pic "Tintin" project.
The 3-D performance-capture films, based on Georges Remi's comic books and co-financed by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, will center on Tintin’s globetrotting adventures as a fearless reporter. In the books, the Thompson Twins are a pair of incompetent, clumsy detectives who can only be told apart by the shape of their moustaches — Thompson, with a “p,” has a flat moustache, while Thomson, without the “p,” has a flared version.
Pegg and Frost have worked together often. They came to the fore in cult Brit TV laffer “Spaced,” before successfully reteaming in box-office successes “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.” Pegg also toplined “Run Fat Boy Run” and “How to Lose Friends and Alienate People.”
The casting was confirmed by Dawn Sedgwick, Pegg’s agent in London, who was unable to confirm if the Twins would appear in both pics.
As previously reported, Andy Serkis will play Tintin’s sidekick Captain Haddock. Tintin has yet to be cast. Thomas Sangster had been set for the role, but exited the project when it was delayed due to funding difficulties caused by the DreamWorks/Paramount split.
Jaha, Dupontarna heter Thompson Twins på engelska.

...
As Tintin, Jamie Bell.

As Red Rackham, Daniel Craig. That’s the big, big star.
As someone I can’t even hazard a guess at, Gad Elmaleh.
As Cuthbert Calculus (uncomfirmed role, but really), Toby Jones.
As someone I can’t hazard a guess at, Mackenzie Crook
Production started today. The film is to be performance captured and released stereo-optically in 2011 - a long wait, but at least there will be plenty of 3D screens ready to go by then.

Spielberg's 'Tintin' sets a date
'Adventures' to hit theaters in December 2011
Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" will hit U.S. theaters in December 2011 -- long after bowing internationally.
Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment unveiled plans to release the motion capture pic Stateside on Dec. 23, 2011. But in an unusual move, film will launch internationally in late October and early November 2011, with Sony Pictures Releasing Intl. handling Continental Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America and India, and Paramount distributing the film in Asia, Australia, the U.K. and all other English-speaking territories.
The two studios also revealed that they will release "Tintin" in 3-D, a move that had been mulled for several months. Insiders said the dailies convinced them that 3-D would offer the best rendition.

sfx.co.uk - Tintin Movie Shot And Edited…
Producer/director Peter Jackson has told the BBC that the first Tintin movie – The Adventures Of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn – is in the can, but that the FX will take two years to complete.
"Tintin is great,” he says. “It's made. The movie is cut together and now [we] are turning it into a fully-rendered film. So the movie, to some degree, exists in a very rough state."
Steven Spielberg is directing the first movie, with Jackson producing, then the roles will be reversed for the second movie. A third movie is also planned. Jamie (Billy Elliot) Bell stars as Tintin, with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as The Thom(p)son Twins, Andy Sirkis as Captain Haddock and Daniel Craig as the villain, Red Rackham.

Peter Jackson Says Spielberg's 'Tintin' is Done Filming, but...
Nov 24th 2009
Today brings good news and bad news for fans eagerly awaiting The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, the first film in a proposed trilogy of new, motion-capture animated 3D films co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson (among others) based on the comic book series created by Georges "Hergé" Remi. Spielberg took up directorial duties on the first in the series, which was supposed to begin filming in 2008 for a 2010 release, but Universal, burned by the under-performance of Beowulf and Monster House at the box office, decided to pull out in the pre-production process, halting progress until Paramount could partner with Sony in order to grease the gears financially.
Not much has popped up in the news department since then, however at the London premiere of Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones, the Lord of the Rings director told reporters that filming had finally been completed on Spielberg's Tintin entry. However, it's still no where close to release. Jackson went on to say that it is going to take another two years to actually animate the film, meaning fans are most likely looking at a late 2011 release date for The Secret of the Unicorn.
Though Spielberg was the bossing around stars Jamie Bell, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig, Cary Elwes, and Andy Serkis on set, it'll be Jackson who takes over the bulk of the day-to-day post-production duties as he oversees the animation being done by Weta Workshop. And though Jackson will be spending far more time directly working on the project than Spielberg, who was only on set for the month it took to capture the performances, it'll be the latter who gets sole credit as director. However, when the film's still-untitled sequel comes out, Jackson will be handling both the on-set and virtual aspects of bringing the world of Tintin to life.
But if it's going to take two years to animate Speilberg's, don't expect Jackson's Tintin any time soon.

Jackson, who directed the 2D Lord of the Rings films, indicated that he has mixed feelings about the 3D technology. "The only thing I get annoyed about is the image being a little dull. It does feel like you're looking at the movie with sunglasses on. But literally, that could just be about getting brighter bulbs in the projectors."

Som t ex Beowulf, The Polar Express och A Christmas Carol.
