Ain't-It-Cool-News reports that Iceman himself, Shawn Ashmore, may have been cast in Bryan Singer's Superman as Jimmy Olsen. The actor previously worked with Singer on X2: X-Men United.

INTERVIEW: LAUREN SHULER DONNER
11.19.04
By Devin Faraci
lsdLauren Shuler Donner is a busy woman, but she took some time out of her day to get on the phone with me to talk about what's going on in her neck of the woods, which is currently full of geek-friendly projects like Constantine and X3.
Lauren first got in touch with CHUD because of her charity work with Hollygrove, an organization that works with abused and abandoned children. She organized a terrific auction - which you can check out here - which offers cool Hollywood props and memorabilia and where all the proceeds go to the group.
First things first - I recorded this interview on my iPod, using my new iTalk extension, and with my cell phone on speaker. What that means is that the first minute or two of the interview is untranscriptable, so I'll break down for you what Lauren said, quoting where I can:
- On Joss Whedon: "I'm a huge fan of Joss'."
- On why Joss won't be directing X3: "Nothing is certain yet."
- On the plot of X3: "It will follow the Dark Phoenix thread, with new storylines and characters." She wouldn't give anything away beyond that.
Q: Reviews from test screenings of Constantine have been popping up online this week. As a producer does this annoy you?
Donner: It’s part of the process. We hold these screenings to get feedback. The only thing is that the movie isn’t done yet, so I hope people give it a chance. I think it’s a great film, and it’s different, in the way that The Matrix was very different. I have 100% belief in Constantine, as does Warner Bros.
Q: How much attention do you pay to the fan community online? How important is that feedback to you?
Donner: It’s enormously important. Because of my experience on X-Men I pay a lot of attention to them. In fact, when we were releasing things from the movie, from Constantine and X2, I always like to release them to the internet first, because they’re our fan base and they’re very, very important to us. We pay attention, believe me.
The problem becomes like on the first X-Men trying to second guess the fans. It comes down to you have to know what you believe in, know there are elements the fans are looking for, try to make sure those elements are incorporated and have the liberty to make a movie. They’re our most important audience.
Q: The folks behind Spider-Man have announced that they want the third one to be the final one, they want to wrap up the whole story. Would you want to do something like that with the X-Men films, or do you see life beyond X3?
Donner: I don’t know. X-Men is different than Spider-Man because you have so many characters, and you have so many different stories. You could go off and do Days of Future Past. You could do Hellfire Club. There’s so much stuff you can do. We are making a separate Wolverine movie.
Q: Right, with David Benioff scripting.
Donner: Right. It’s different with Spider-Man because that has the one character, but X-Men has so many characters you could take it longer, just as long as the movies have integrity and you’re being honest to the fans and you’re being honest to the characters. If you can still spin a good story, like Star Trek, if you can still go and make good movies, four, five or six – fine, I’m not against it. Just as long as we’re never retreading and making old news. As long as we’re always being fresh and there are great stories to mine – as long as the comics go on the movies can go on.
Q: So about the Wolverine movie – what angle are you taking? A lot of fans are excited about the idea of incorporating the Asian adventures of Logan, plenty of ninjas.
Donner: The plan is to do more of an origin story for Wolverine. The first one. If that’s successful, my deepest desire – I’m not reflecting Fox but you never know – my deepest desire is after the origin story, which David has worked out beautifully, it’s really good – if that works, the second one could be the Mariko, ninja story.
Q: You really know your stuff!
Donner: That whole Mariko love story is phenomenal because he gets down to his basest self and it’s so cool. That’s a great storyline. But I think you have to do the origin first to educate the broader audience, and once you’ve done that and they know his history and what really happened to Logan then you can move on. You can go on to Mariko and her father and that stuff.
Q: Hugh Jackman is signed on to that or are you willing to go with another Wolverine?
Donner: No! No! I would never go with a different Wolverine. In fact, we met, Benioff and Hugh and I, and Benioff told him the story and Hugh loved it. Hugh’s on board. Hugh knows the whole samurai story. I gave him those comics, he read those, so in the future he’s onboard with those also.
hollygroveQ: How is the auction going?
Donner: It’s going well. Thank you so much – these kids have just been really dealt a bad hand. They’re abandoned, they’re abused. They need support, they need psychological help, they need the services that Hollygrove performs. People in the industry – not only did I have a ton of stuff from everything I’ve done from St. Elmo’s Fire to X-Men 2, but people in the industry were really generous. There’s such good stuff on there. There’s a signed Rod Stewart guitar, there’s a Daily Bugle from Spider-Man. There’s a lot of good stuff out there for the fans to buy. It’s Christmas, it’s a good time to buy, and I love CHUD for printing that letter.

In the Future: Shawn Ashmore
Source: Edward Douglas
December 6, 2004
Shawn Ashmore is best known for his role as Bobby Drake, AKA Iceman, in the "X-Men" movies. MTV even gave him an award for "Breakthrough Male Performance" for his part in X2: X-Men United. Since making that film, he took on an even bigger challenge playing the substantially larger role of Ged in SCI FI Channel's mini-series Earthsea based on the novels by Ursula K. Le Guin.
While in town to promote the fantasy epic, Ashmore talked to ComingSoon.net about the expectations for the next X-movie, which he is already signed on to do. Although he admitted to having no idea what the script is like, who the director will be and when they're going to start, he did have some ideas of what he would like to see in the next film as far as his character. "I really want to continue the Pyro/Iceman sort of rivalry," he told us, "Because I think there's a great opportunity for a really fun battle between the two elements. I also like the relationship with Anna's character Rogue. It's not a typical teenage love story. There's a lot going against them, and I think it's interesting to sort of work through that. They're in a relationship that they can't rush into but they want to so badly that the tension there is really fun."
Ashmore also reflected upon the pros and cons of working with a new director. "Brian [Singer]really crafted the first two films, so it's going to be difficult to lose someone that had such a huge influence on the movies," he said. "But I also think that it'll be interesting to get some new blood in as long as you stay true to the original comics. You can't jump too far off Brian's films, because I think people will find it a little strange if it's a completely different look or totally new characters. I think it will be nice, in a way, to get someone else's vision. Brian really set up an interesting franchise, but whomever comes along should enjoy it and have fun like we have so far."
So what about Singer's latest project, Superman? Rumors have been circulating that Ashmore might play photographer Jimmy Olsen. He tried to deny them: "I'm always the last to know about these things, but there's nothing solid, so we're just waiting to see." (A few minutes later, Ashmore's Earthsea co-star Kristin Kreuk, a star on Smallville, let slip that she thought it was wonderful that Shawn was involved with the movie. Maybe he told her something that he didn't want us to know just yet? Hmm.)
In the meantime, Ashmore has been keeping busy, having just completed a couple of smaller independent films. "I just finished a film in Montreal called 'Three Needles' with director Thom Fitzgerald, a great Canadian filmmaker. It's basically three stories that take place, one in Montreal, one in Africa and one in China. It's about the AIDS epidemic and how it affects different cultures and people. I basically play a B porn star with AIDS that is cheating on his blood tests to work in the industry. It's a really dark, different character for me, but really interesting and tough to play."
He also finished working on the independent film Dot with Elisha Cuthbert and Edie Falco. "I play a character named Conner Kennedy, who is basically the typical high school jock. This whole film is about this deaf girl named Dot who moves to a new school. She's sort of like the quote-unquote freak that everyone dislikes and makes fun of in public, but then in private opens up to her because they assume that she can't hear. All the characters are discovered through their relationship with her."

'Bob' sends us this unconfirmed X3 scoop:
Just thought I would send this to you as it does involve X-Men 3 in a way. Marvel, still on a creative high because of the sales of Spider-Man 2 (both in box office returns and the DVD sales) will be taking a much more hands on approach with the production of X-Men 3. X-Men and X2 were largely done by Fox (with some input from Avi Arad) but the majority of decisions made on those movies were either made by Bryan Singer or the movie prodcuers who work for the studio.
Marvel however since then has become a big creative force in Hollywood, and Avi Arad has moved up from excutive producer to producer in several Marvel Films. His knowledge of Marvel and it's charecters will be playing a much bigger role in X-Men 3 and will include over-seeing the script writing process, meeting with Hugh Jackman and the other actors to reprise their roles, and will be giving the movies something of a make-over with a new production team that is in the process of being hired even! as we speak of.
If all goes well, X-Men 3 will be a very special movie and will be better then anything Singer did with X-Men and X2

X-Men 3 to Film in Sydney?
Source: Sydney Star Observer
December 16, 2004
The Sydney Star Observer has up a new interview with Hugh Jackman's personal trainer Michael Ryan who hints that X-Men 3 may be headed Down Under:
Michael Ryan, host of fitness show Crunch on Foxtel's W channel, certainly knows about keeping people in shape. He is, after all, actor Hugh Jackman's personal trainer and the man credited with whipping the star into muscled perfection for his roles in Van Helsing and X-Men 2. He's also just been asked to work with Jackman on X-Men 3, which may be filmed in Sydney.

"We are feverishly working on X-MEN...the cast is IN. We will announce a director very shortly. It's a treacherous process to find the next Bryan Singer, but there are other Bryan Singer's out there. This weekend was specifically active, because everyone was in town for the Academy (Oscar's)...and very, very shortly everybody will get the answers." said Arad.
"I know we've been through the same process with the FANTASTIC FOUR, and it was all good news and happy ending, and this is going to be really happy, because our choices are really, REALLY interesting...and for X-Men it's kind of a philosophical drama, this is what's important to us. We need someone who gets the process right."
