The following YouTube video confirms that Guillermo Del Toro will be directing 'The Hobbit' films. UPDATE: We have an additional inside source which says that the deal is NOT signed yet, however it has a 99% probability of happening. The parties are agreed and we should expect an official announcement after the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) Strike.
See below for the video - The important part starts around :40

The official announcement, which - New Line Cinema will be eager to make when all the t’s are crossed and the i’s are dotted - will come after the writer’s strike is settled.

Del Toro to take charge of The Hobbit | News | Guardian Unlimited Film
Guillermo del Toro has officially signed up to direct The Hobbit, according to reports leaking out from a film premiere in France. The Pan's Labyrinth creator will oversee a double-bill of films based on JRR Tolkien's fantasy adventure, which paved the way for The Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson, director of the Oscar-winning Rings trilogy, will serve as executive producer.
The announcement was made at last night's French premiere of The Orphanage, a Spanish horror film that Del Toro helped produce. Introducing the film-maker, the host told the audience: "Today is a big day because we are announcing what everyone wanted to hear, which is that he will be directing The Hobbit." Del Toro had previously been reported to be in negotiations to take charge of the project. (Via: Black Magic)

TORN - Further Proof that Del Toro is only 99%
February 4th, 2008
So we've been saying for a week or so now that Del Toro is about 99% confirmed to be the director of The Hobbit films. Total Film has a report out today with words right from Guillermo himself:
"I think what happens very often is that these rumours have a way of becoming real or not. I don't expect The Hobbit to be troublesome. But you know, then again, it may never happen or it may!"
Our bets are still on his helming the role, but until the final t's or crossed, nothing is a sure thing. (Sorta like the Patriots were supposed to win the Superbowl!) When the writer's strike officially ends, look for negotiations on The Hobbit to finalize and an official announcement. Read the full article over at [Total Film!]

Cinematical - Guillermo del Toro on The Hobbit: Still Negotiating
Posted Feb 6th 2008
Hollywood deals being what they are, this story could be out of date as soon as it's posted, but apparently the latest word on Guillermo del Toro directing The Hobbit is still: "Not a sure thing." That's from the director's mouth to the ears of Total Film!, which quotes del Toro as saying "the negotiations have not ended and The Hobbit is not a sure thing."
As Monika Bartyzel posted last week, The Hollywood Reporter published an article stating that del Toro was involved in official talks to direct two films based on the source material by J.R.R. Tolkien. If the deal was signed, del Toro and Peter Jackson would oversee the writing of the scripts and work on pre-production, with filming slated to begin in early 2009 on the first installment for release in 2010.
A couple of days later, the Internet went wild with the rumor that the deal had been closed. That was based on a statement reportedly made at the French premiere of the del Toro-produced The Orphanage. As a video posted on YouTube makes apparent, however, del Toro didn't confirm anything: someone in the audience asked in French, the question was translated into Spanish, and del Toro just smiled.
What sort of film would del Toro make out of The Hobbit? In the Total Film interview, del Toro says: '"You know the beauty of The Hobbit, if it were to happen ... is that The Hobbit, out of all the books, is the one that resembles more a fairytale. I loved this very Hitchcockian idea of a very proper, prissy character with a very limited universe being taken on a journey where danger and pain and loss ultimately enhances his view of the world." Sounds good to me! We'll keep our ears open for more Hobbit news.
EDIT:
TORN - Even more hints that Del Toro is Definitely Hobbit Director
February 6th, 2008
Reporter Jussi Ahlroth from Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat sends us an email today detailing a conversation with Guillermo Del Toro’s casting director, Jeremy Zimmerman.“I met today Jeremy Zimmerman, who has done the casting for Guillermo Del Toro’s four films. He’s known Del Toro four six years and says they are “mates”. I asked him if Del Toro will direct The Hobbit. He was a bit taken back, almost surprised that I would even ask. “Yes, yes, he’s doing it.” After a while he said: “He’s got the Ring”, and smiled.”
Chalk this up as further proof that Del Toro is going to be directing ‘The Hobbit’ films. Thanks to Jussi for sending along the tip and great news!

Hadevarit kul att se honom i The Hobbit.
