Stunning First Look: Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians - Film School Rejects
The folks at USA Today have debuted the first look at the upcoming animated adventure Legend of the Guardians, from 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder. As we reported a few days ago, this film was recently retitled from Guardians of Ga'Hoole, the title of the book upon which it's based. Now that the title is settled, Warner Bros. has released the first five photos from the film — and they look beautiful.
The ultimate test of this animation — which looks to be closing the uncanny valley in a similar way to Avatar, creating an environment that looks more real than animated, without looking hokey — will be in how it moves. But for the moment, the still shots looks great.
I've grabbed a few favorites from the gallery and posted them below. More can be found over at USA Today. Check them out. They're certainly worth a look.
Nyra is an evil queen of the St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, where the birds are actually brainwashed into becoming soldiers. Helen Mirren, who played a conflicted monarch in The Queen, gets to "become kind of a female Darth Vader" this time around, Snyder says. Though she has a reputation for being regal, Mirren plays a vicious leader "who pulls some of the strings and has a need for power."
Emilie de Ravin plays Eglantine, left, a good friend of Soren, center, and a member of the owls' search-and-rescue team. Jim Sturgess plays Soren, while Ryan Kwanten provides the voice for Kludd, right, Soren's jealous brother. "Soren is a classic hero," Snyder says. "He loves his sister, who is sweet, but smart beyond her years. He's a dreamer. He loves myths and stories. Kludd sees all that as weakness."
Richard Roxburgh plays Boron, center-left, the kindly King of Ga'Hoole. He's fond of scatological humor and carousing with sea gulls, which keeps things lively in the tree.
Zack Snyder's Guardians of Ga'Hoole Gets a Big Cast - Film School Rejects
Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham have joined the voice cast of Zack Snyder's next film, the 3D animated feature Guardians of Ga'hoole, according to a report from Heat Vision. The fantasy film, which is currently in production in Sidney, will also feature the voices of Australian actors Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten and Jay Laga'aia, as well as English actors Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren and Jim Sturgess.
The story follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. It is based on a series of children's books written by Kathryn Lasky and illustrated by Richard Chowder.
This is a highly anticipated project for Snyder, who is currently at work on both this and Sucker Punch, his all-girl actioner. Last year, producer Donald De Line told Collider that the project would be Lord of the Rings in scope. And now that we see this very big, very awesome voice cast, there's no reason for anyone out there to be anything but excited. So be excited, people…
Legend of the Guardians Trailer: This is Ga'Hoole! - Film School Rejects
It may just be me, but the first several moments of this brand new Legend of the Guardians trailer — the new animated film from director Zack Snyder — feels a lot like 300. Super slow-motion and angry warrior faces. All that's missing is the voice of Gerard Butler screaming "This is Ga-HOOLE!" while one owl kicks the other one down a pit of despair. That doesn't exactly happen, but some other cool stuff certainly does.
The film features the voice talent of Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, Ryan Kwanten, Jay Laga'aia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Richard Roxburgh, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess, Hugo Weaving and David Wenham. It is in theaters September 24th. Follow along below with the official synopsis and trailer.
Synopsis:
Acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder makes his animation debut with the fantasy family adventure "Guardians of Ga'Hoole," based on the beloved books by Kathryn Lasky. The film follows Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. While Soren dreams of someday joining his heroes, his older brother, Kludd, scoffs at the notion, and yearns to hunt, fly and steal his father's favor from his younger sibling. But Kludd's jealousy has terrible consequences–causing both owlets to fall from their treetop home and right into the talons of the Pure Ones. Now it is up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave young owls. Together they soar across the sea and through the mist to find the Great Tree, home of the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole–Soren's only hope of defeating the Pure Ones and saving the owl kingdoms.
