Hartnett Up For 30 Days

Josh Hartnett, who once starred in 40 Days and 40 Nights, is now in final negotiations to star in the vampire drama 30 Days of Night for Columbia Pictures, based on Steve Niles' graphic novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Ben Templesmith illustrated the stylish book, which was published by IDW. David Slade will direct the movie.

Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson wrote the script, set in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States, where the sun does not appear for more than 30 days during the dead of winter. An evil force emerges from the darkness, striking terror in the town. The local sheriffs—a husband (Hartnett)-and-wife team—are forced to choose between saving themselves and helping the town survive until daylight returns. The studio is looking for a female lead. Shooting is set to begin in early August in New Zealand. Ghost House Pictures' Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are producing.

If you go to the Official Webpage for 30 Days Of night you can watch a special red band trailer and an extended scene for Sony's upcoming 30 Days of Night, which its theaters October 19. Click on 'Watch Restricted Content - 18 and Over Only' on the official site's homepage. Set in the isolated town of Barrow, Alaska, in the extreme northern hemisphere, which is plunged into complete darkness annually for an entire month. When most of the inhabitants head south for the winter, a mysterious group of strangers appear: bloodthirsty vampires, ready to take advantage of the uninterrupted darkness to feed on the town's residents. As the night wears on, Barrow's Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his estranged wife Stella (Melissa George), and an ever-shrinking group of survivors must do anything they can to last until daylight.

SCI FI Wire | 30 Days Mirrored Graphic Novel

David Slade, who directed the upcoming vampire film 30 Days of Night, told SCI FI Wire that he wanted the look of the film to closely match the look of the graphic novel by writer Steve Niles and artist Ben Templesmith.

"I loved Ben's illustrations," Slade said in an interview. "It's what drew me to the graphic novel in the very beginning, before the idea of the movie, when I actually picked it up off the newsstand and bought it, actually from Golden Apple Comics in L.A. And when I was working with my production designers, the first thing I said was, 'I'm not really interested so much in Barrow, Alaska, but Ben's Barrow.'"

The title of both the comic and the feature adaptation refers to the period of continuous darkness that the town undergoes each winter. The conditions make it the perfect feeding ground for vampires, who stage an attack when Barrow is at its most vulnerable.

Using the graphic novel as a template presented a challenge for Slade, who strove to find a balance between the fantastic illustrations and the realistic horror of the story.

"Now there's a schism here, because Ben's work is incredibly stylized," Slade said. "The more stylized you are, the less chance you have of scaring people. So there was this really fine line we had to walk between absolute realism wherever possible and Ben's fantastic template, which we were going to use as faithfully as we possibly could. I mean, we went as far as Lily, the little girl, ... I got [the costume designer] to reproduce the cloth, the pattern on the dress from the graphic novel, a tattoo on a head. Many, many little details that you will see."

According to the film's premise, the vampires are aware of the mythology and the stories that exist in our world, but use the legends to hide their existence. This allowed the filmmakers to design the look of the vampires, achieved through a mix of prosthetics and computer graphics, as a mixture fantasy and reality.

"The point is 'We're the real thing,'" Slade said. "So I can just do anything I want to now. I can go, 'OK, I don't have to really obey too many conventions. We'll deal with the daylight issues, but that's about all the supernatural. We'll make them stronger. And we'll make them a little bit scary looking. And we'll make them as close to Ben's illustrations as we possibly can, without it looking like they're not people anymore. Without them looking like they've been messed around with or have prosthetics on.' We used very minimal prosthetics. We used contact lenses, because it was important to me to have exactly the same dead, shark eyes. And teeth, ... which gave them the shark-like teeth as opposed to the two incisors that you're used to. And the rest was something we're going to refer to as digital makeup, which is kind of a really fast and dirty way of retreating it a little further in the direction of Ben's illustrations without getting into, like, Lord of the Rings-style Gollum replacements and such." 30 Days of Night opens Oct. 19.

Bloody Disgusting - B-D Chats WIth Sam Raimi About 30 Days of Night and Sequel?!

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

This afternoon Bloody-Disgusting was lucky enough to chat with legendary director-producer Sam Raimi about his forthcoming comic book adaptation of 30 Days of Night, which hits theaters this Friday. Inside you'll find all of the details from why he chose this comic to why he hired David Slade (Hard Candy) to direct.

Today B-D had the pleasure of chatting with Sam Raimi, producer of Columbia Pictures’ 30 DAYS OF NIGHT. Besides updating us all of those great sequels and the EVIL DEAD remake, he also talked a lot of the 30 DAYS project, which was one of the first for Ghost House Pictures, “Ghost House Pictures is always looking for the next great script and next great story. I read Ben Templesmith’s and Steve Niles comic book and found it gripping and powerful. The concept seemed great and really should have been thought up before because it’s so obviously great. I never heard of it before… it was original. Maybe that’s how great ideas are they just seem like someone should have thought of them before?”

What really connected him to the story were the two main characters, played by Melissa George and Josh Hartnett in the film “The thing that connected me to it were the two characters at the center - Eben and Stella – and the love story. At Ghost House we are always looking for something new. It was a home grown idea, which was exciting. I really liked the fact that they were having problems, they love each other and are real human beings… and that it was a love story at heart. I love how the book ends - how the books begins with the sunset and ended with the sunrise - and the two of them and the journey they have took on the course of this one night.”

David Slade told us that Raimi was planning on directing the film, which he denies, “I never thought of directing it myself. I was so busy with SPIDERMAN 2 at the time and I thought the company Ghost House was for other directors to direct.”

Raimi also chatted a bit about a possible sequel to 30 DAYS, “It is very different but I don't know if there is going to be a sequel to 30 DAYS OF NIGHT nor do I know, if there was, if it would be based upon that. We'd have to see if it's successful at the box office and see if people really want to see a sequel. And if they do then I'd probably huddle with Ben [Templesmith] and Steve [Niles] and my partner, Rob [Tapert], and figure out what they thought it should be. Mostly I want to stay true, if there was a sequel, to the books. I think that's what got us there in the first place."

Raimi then defended the way the horror genre has been heading and how violent it has become, “It’s always been an element of the horror film to show us the gross out. Its one option all filmmakers have in making a horror film. And it’s not something I found myself above either, so I don’t want to speak like a big shot (he chuckles).” Raimi continues, “A gross out is not beneath me… it’s one tool in the arsenal, I don’t know if it’s a new thing either. Way back when showing Lon Chaney – with the hair dissolving turning into the Wolf Man - might have been a gross out then. Cannibal Holocaust showed some intensive sights. When I think of the new ones it’s just the latest incarnation with better technology and make up effects.”

On hiring director David Slade, “I thought the acting was great in HARD CANDY, the strength I wanted to realize in 30 DAYS was the characters of Eben and Stella and their love story,” he continues, “the relationship in center of the piece that Steven Niles had written about. I didn’t know if I was in love with David’s directing or the young actress in HARD CANDY, but something there worked really well for the length of the picture and I thought that’s what I want to have work in our picture.”

In the end though, Raimi stayed out of most of the production, “All I did was choose the material, beg Sony and Ghost House to buy it from me, then chose Josh Hartnett and begged him to meet with David Slade, chose the director with my partners and the New Zealand location… and then didn’t have anything to do with it except when the dailies came back I made notes…” - Mr. Disgusting

Bloody Disgusting - 30 Days of Night #1 at Box Office, Does This Mean Sequel?

Columbia Pictures' 30 Days of Night was number 1 at the box office this weekend pulling in an estimated $16 million, according to the Box Office Mojo. This is about $6 million less than what was expected, but it still sounds successful enough to warrant a sequel. If so, creator Steve Niles tells us exclusively that he's ready, artist Ben Templesmith is ready and star Melissa George is ready. In addition, Steve told us they'd want David Slade back, although our sources indicate that Slade wasn't happy with this production. We'll keep you posted as more news comes in, but it looks like 30 Days is going to pull in over $35 million by the end of its theatrical run.
