Robert Downey, Jr. and Jon Favreau Suit Up For Marvel Studios' "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 2"
As part of his four picture deal with Marvel Studios, Robert Downey Jr. is appearing as Tony Stark in "The Avengers" motion picture, as well as reprising his starring role as the larger-than-life leading character in "Iron Man 2." Jon Favreau will return to direct the sequel to the blockbuster "Iron Man," which to date has grossed over $578 million worldwide, as well as executive produce "The Avengers."
Academy Award® nominee Downey was most recently seen in the summer comedy blockbuster "Tropic Thunder" starring opposite Ben Stiller and Jack Black. Before "Iron Man," he was best known for his film roles in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "Wonder Boys" and "Chaplin," the film for which he was nominated for an Oscar®.
In addition to directing the first "Iron Man," Favreau has previously directed "Elf," "Zathura: A Space Adventure" and "Made." He is also well known for writing and starring in "Swingers." He will next be seen acting in "Four Christmasses," "I Love You Man" and "Couples Retreat."
Don Cheadle Will Star as Rhodey in "Iron Man 2"
Marvel Studios is pleased today to confirm that an agreement has been finalized with award-winning actor Don Cheadle to take on the role of Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes in Marvel's "Iron Man 2" due in theaters on May 7, 2010. In casting Cheadle, Marvel replaces Terrence Howard who appeared in the role of Rhodey in Iron Man.
Cheadle is also signed on to perform the same role in "The Avengers" and subsequent installments of the "Iron Man" franchise.
"We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in 'Iron Man 2.' It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take 'Iron Man 2' to new heights," said Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.
Cheadle is best known for his Oscar® nominated lead performance in "Hotel Rwanda" as well as his role as Basher Tarr in the "Ocean's" franchise, "Crash" and "Swordfish."
Based on Marvel's iconic Super Hero, "Iron Man 2" continues the story of this summer's box office blockbuster IRON MAN, the first feature film produced independently by Marvel Studios. "Iron Man 2" will be produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D'Esposito, Jon Favreau, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Denis Stewart.
In a movie event, "The Avengers" will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced.
The highly anticipated sequel to "Iron Man" will be released in theatres on May 7, 2010 and "The Avengers" will be released July 15, 2011. Both films will be distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Empire: Movie News - Thor, Cap & Avengers Get New Dates
/.../
The positioning of two members of The Avengers just a month apart is no accident, for Marvel has moved its most ambitious movie back a year, allowing momentum to build up with the intro of Cap and Thor.
The superhero mash-up, which will see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and maybe Black Widow, Nick Fury and previously unannounced hero come together, will now come out on May 4, 2012, ten months on from its original date of July 15, 2011.

X-Men writer Zak Penn breaks his silence about adapting The Avengers | SCI FI Wire
Screenwriter Zak Penn is already scratching his head about how to piece together and overlap stories from three, maybe four or more movies as he sits down to write The Avengers this summer, based on the Marvel Comics superheroes.
Penn was on a panel Tuesday night called "Graphic Explosion" at the Los Angeles Film Festival in the Westwood Village area of Los Angeles, along with History of Violence screenwriter Josh Olson and Radical Publishing co-founder Barry Levine. During the question-and-answer segment, Penn answered some questions he said "I might get in trouble for."
Penn said he ran into frustration while writing the last two X-Men movies because he wanted to include a few of the other characters—the Fantastic Four, for instance—but was prevented by studio executives. That, perhaps, led to the ho-hum response to his Incredible Hulk movie.
But Penn is aware that Marvel movies coming up—with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America—will precede his Avengers film (slated for 2012), so he has to figure out how all the movies fit together. Now that Marvel is itself producing movies as a company, Penn said, "It is a world of difference; it is a lot easier to do things like that, and they encourage it."
Penn said he is meeting this coming week with the team writing the other movies so they can piece together storylines and overlap some of the film plots.
"They're doing Captain American and Thor first, and then Avengers is coming out," Penn said. "They want to see that they're all connected, not like the Fantastic Four can't come into the X-Men world, like I was told. I'm taking a meeting next week with the Thor and Captain America people, and we are all going to get together, and I will see what is going to happen. I'll see where they are leaving the characters; it's pretty complicated. ... There's a board that is tracking what is happening. [We'll see] how this movie overlaps in that movie. ... Marvel is autonomous now. It is night and day: Everyone has read every comic. They know how to make a cool movie."
And although Penn holds the responsibility for bringing all the characters of the other films together, he remains insecure. "It's hard to make a good movie," he said. "We all have the best intentions, and it still might suck."

Rumor control: Joss Whedon to direct The Avengers?? | SCI FI Wire
There's a lot of bogus news going up today in honor of April Fool's Day, but our pals at IESB.net insists this is real, so we'll bite:
Among the contenders to direct the proposed Avengers movie for Marvel is cheerful atheist and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator JOSS WHEDON!
The site reports that Whedon is edging out Clash of the Titans director Louis Leterrier:
Whedon, who was previously writing and directing WB's long gestating Wonder Woman film, has a history with the Marvel brand as a comic book writer. His run of the Astonishing X-Men was one of Marvel's best selling lines and was nominated for several Eisner Awards. He was also the second writer on the Runaways line for Marvel and wrote short stories for Stan Lee Meets Spider-Man. Whedon is currently working on Cabin in the Woods on which he is writing and producing starring Thor himself Chris Hemsworth directed by Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard.
Zak Penn is writing the Avengers screenplay.
Please please please let this be true!!

Joss Whedon in Final Negotiations to Direct The Avengers | /Film
On April Fool’s Day, IESB had the bad timing to report that Joss Whedon was on the shortlist to direct The Avengers for Marvel. Really bad timing for that scoop — while Whedon is the sort of guy a lot of fans would like to see on this film, there was too much reason to be skeptical when it ran on April 1. The LA Times confirmed that shortlist a few days later, but even then it was tough to tell if the studio was serious, or just spitballing in the same way it seemed to do with the Captain America casting.
Either way, things are evidently serious now, as there’s a report that Whedon is in final talks to direct the film.
Deadline has a piece on the deal, but doesn’t offer any more info.
Whedon is a ballsy choice, but will the identity of the director really matter from the perspective of the mainstream? Probably not. A great many people won’t think ‘this movie is from the guy behind Buffy and Firefly and that movie Serenity.’ They’ll hopefully think, ‘holy shit, this movie has Iron Man and Thor and Captain America? I’m so in!’ Making the film look like a good prospect has a lot more to do with the success of Thor and Captain America than it does the choice of director.
Making it a good movie — that’s a different story. While Whedon has his shortcomings, there will be serious editorial oversight from Kevin Feige, Jon Favreau and others at Marvel. Furthermore, I think Whedon managed Serenity really well. That film was made on a relatively small budget, had many characters and a couple solid setpieces, and, in general, it worked. I came into it not having seen moment one of Firefly and the film turned me on to the series. I can see him going to town with The Avengers.

It's Really Happening - Joss Whedon to Direct The Avengers!
This a fanboy dream come true. I don't think anyone thought they'd ever wake up and read a headline saying that Joss Whedon, the geek creator of TV shows like "Buffy" and "Firefly", would be directing the first big superhero team-up movie to ever hit the big screen - The Avengers. Deadline has confirmed the big news of the day: "Marvel Studios is in final negotiations for Joss Whedon to direct Marvel Studios' The Avengers." Earlier this month, it was rumored that Whedon was on the shortlist to direct, but no one seemed to believe it would actually happen. Joss Whedon's The Avengers will hit theaters the first weekend of May in 2012.
Fleming lists a few confirmed superheroes that will be a part of the team: Iron Man ((Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and SHIELD agent Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson). "Other signature superheroes" will be involved, but haven't been announced yet. Whedon's background is perfect for this movie, as he's worked at Marvel before, specifically on the Astonishing X-Men series and a number of other comics. This is most certainly surprising news, but definitely good news. If there's anyone who'll be able to handle an immense cast of superheroes, it's Joss Whedon. I just hope he doesn't cast Eliza Dushku in this. What do you think of this? Will Joss Whedon do a good job with The Avengers?

Källa: hitfix.comBrian Swardstrom of WME responds with the following:
"This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at ComiCon and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast. Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings.
We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige's mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige's statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel's fans.
