"We try to find the angle we haven't played and try to hit those balls a little differently than we have before."
In addition to a greater involvement with the happenings of the Marvel Universe, Daredevil will be moving beyond his typical stomping grounds of Hell's Kitchen to all neighborhoods of Manhattan. "As I look around Hell's Kitchen now, in 2011, I think 'mission accomplished, Matt!'" continued Wacker. "It's awesome! Everything is made of glass and it's clean and the hookers are nice. So making all of New York City a character for the book I think is what will also surprise people."
In terms of supporting cast, Waid has turned a lot of his attention to Foggy Nelson, Matt's best friend and partner-in-crime (read: law). "Foggy's the most important member of the supporting cast and always has been," said Waid. "I love their friendship, I love their partnership, I love the fact that Foggy is the brains of the outfit in the sense that he remembers every law case ever. And Matt brings the charisma to the team. Their friendship has gone through more than most friendships in the Marvel Universe, and probably will continue to. Because even though their allied as legal partners again, Foggy has his suspicions. There's something not right about Matt from the very get-go, now that he's come back to New York. There's something he's not saying. There's just something off about Matt, and that's going to drive their relationship for the near future."
"We both wanted the lawyering of Matt Murdock to be a big factor in the book again," added Waid of he and Wacker. "But at the same time, there's nothing duller than 20 pages of people standing around a courtroom."
"It's not fun to draw either." added Rivera.
Waid said that the team talked at length about mixing Daredevil in with villains that aren't typically associated with the hero. "Paolo had a great suggestion in that we do Claw, master of sound. That was a good call." Wacker added, "The idea of Daredevil fighting Silver Surfer appeals to me." And Alonso tossed in Batroc as a potential villain, an idea that Waid dug. It's clear that the team is thinking beyond the confines of Daredevil's typical stable of villains.
It's clear that the new Daredevil series is moving beyond the darker tones of Bendis' acclaimed run and trying something a little different. That being said, the team confirmed that despite a greater involvement in the Marvel Universe and Matt's joining of the New Avengers, it wouldn't be a case of constant guest stars in his own book. "The Avengers will show up in Daredevil whenever there's a story reason for them to, but the book is Daredevil. It'll be about Daredevil." confirmed Brevoort.
