Bloody Disgusting - First Look at Neil Gaiman's Animated Feature Coraline

Source: NeilGaiman.Com

Monday, December 24, 2007

Added to BDTV, courtesy of Neilgaiman.com, comes the first ever footage from Coraline, which was announced way back in 2004. The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick will helm the film version of Neil Gaiman's creepy kids' book. It was originally conceived as a live-action movie and will now be a spooky animated epic, with Selick both helming and writing the script, based on Gaiman's tale of a young girl who lives in a big house with an assortment of odd characters. But they're nothing compared to what she finds when she walks through a strange door that leads her into a nightmarish world mirroring the real one, where distorted alter egos of her parents try to keep her trapped forever.

Shock Till You Drop - Focus Features' Official Coraline Synopsis

March 4, 2008

A Christmas present to animation enthusiasts, Coraline, the latest from director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas), opens in limited release this December and Focus Features recently passed along the following plot synopsis.

A high-definition stop-motion animated feature – the first to be originally filmed in 3-D – with spectacular CG effects, based on Neil Gaiman's international best-selling book. A young girl (Dakota Fanning) walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life – only much better. But when this wondrously off-kilter, fantastical adventure turns dangerous, and her counterfeit parents (including Other Mother [Teri Hatcher]) try to keep her forever, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home – and save her family.

Dread Central - SDCC 08: First Look at Coraline Figures!

Thu, 07/24/2008

Continuing to show off all NECA has to offer at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Nomad ran across their display of figures from the upcoming stop-motion animated film Coraline, based on the book by Neil Gaiman. Apparently he went a little insane with the images this time, so there’s a lot to sift through. Enjoy!

Följ länken för att se alla bilder. Tycker det ger en liten vink åt hur det kommer se ut. Personligen är jag svag för den här typen av film och det jag hittills har sett får mig att verkligen längta efter att få se filmen.

Sci-Fi Wire - Coraline Film Breaks With Book

19-SEPTEMBER-08

In adapting Neil Gaiman's children's novella Coraline into a 3-D stop-motion animated film, writer-director Henry Selick said that he listened to the author's advice, but ultimately came up with his own approach to the project.

"I actually kind of had to get away from Neil for a while in order to turn it into a movie, because it's a great, wonderful book," Selick said in an interview on the set in Portland, Ore., last July. "I was following it too closely, and it was hard to make the transition with sharing everything I was doing with Neil. I mean, he's very, incredibly talented, and it's intimidating. He's such a fine writer. But the funny thing is, I said, 'I can't talk to you for a year.' And when I came back, and I had changed things and invented another character, expanded things, shrunk [things]. But everywhere I could I kept what I could from the book and respected the tone."

Both the book and the film center on the character of Coraline (voiced by Dakota Fanning in the film), a young, bored girl who moves into an old house with her busy parents. While exploring on her own, she discovers a door that leads to an alternate universe where everything seems to be better. There, she has an Other Mother (voiced by Teri Hatcher) and Other Father (voiced by John Hodgmean), who are just like her own parents, except they're much more attentive and have black buttons for eyes.

Although Selick went in his own direction when it came to the script, he made sure that Gaiman was involved in the production process. And Gaiman was understanding about the changes made to his story.

"He was very happy," Selick said. "So we came to that place where we understood, a movie's not a book. And then along the way I showed him character designs. I've shown him story reels of the film. So it's not like a regular, all-the-time interaction, but on a fairly regular basis I send him new stuff. And he's always right. He always has one or two comments, and except in one case--the cat's voice, which he doesn't like ... because he actually wanted to do it himself. But aside from that, every other note he's given has been right and doable. ... So he's great, an amazing collaborator and not someone who's pulling out their hair [going], 'They're ruining my books.'"

Neil Gaiman Talks 'Coraline' - ComicMix news
Author on Adaptations and Death

Neil Gaiman’s Coraline has been turned into an animated film by Henry Selick and the popular author spoke with Premiere about the film, which opens in February. Much of the material is familiar to connoisseurs of the man’s career but he did fill in some gaps.

He discussed how he had the book sent to the director 18 months prior to publication. “That's true. I mean, Henry didn't even get the final draft. But the moment I finished it, I gave it to my agent, the redoubtable Jon Levin at CAA, and I said... ‘Well, I want it with Henry Selick and I quite like it with Tim Burton, 'cause I love The Nightmare Before Christmas, and they were the two people who did that, and I think, if it's gonna be a film, it should be something like that.’ And I don't know if it ever made it through the ranks to actually land on Tim Burton's desk and get read, [but] it was really a moot point, because by the end of the week, Henry had read it, said that he wanted to do it, and had put the mechanisms in place. You know, the contract negotiations had already started.”

Gaiman was very pleased with Selick’s fidelity to the source material but clearly things had to be modified between print and screen. “He wrote a first draft that was incredibly faithful,” Gaiman said. “And I think I actually wound up saying to him, ‘Look, I think it's a bit too faithful,’ because it didn't feel like a movie, it felt like you were just reading the book. And I sort of encouraged him to expand it into a film a bit more. And the next one he rather nervously added a character and added events, but now the script read like a movie script. And then it was just a matter of him having another six years to find a studio that would give him the money to make the ultimate stop-motion movie.”

He remained uninvolved in the production but remained curious. “I'd go about my life and then I'd sit up one day and think, You know I haven't seen anything for three or four months now, and I'd phone Henry and I'd say, ‘Have you got anything for me to see?’ And he'd say, ‘Yeah, I'll get you off a DVD.’ And I'd get a DVD with another 10 minutes of footage on it! [laughs] What's actually been fun is, because they're pretty much shooting it exactly in order, the DVDs have been getting scarier and scarier. They started off [and I thought], ‘Well this is rather sweet and rather friendly,’ and the last one that I got I could actually say, ‘No, this is scary, this is really scary.’

Gaiman also addressed the long-delayed film version of his Death: The High Cost of Living. “Well, I think the latest is that we're all waiting to see what happens to New Line. Death is a very odd thing because, unlike Coraline or Anansi Boys, which I'm doing for Warners, or The Graveyard Book or any of those kinds of things, I don't own and control the rights to Death. I'm attached to it, I've written a script for it, I'm meant to be directing it... but I don't control it, and for reasons having to do with corporate relationships between DC Comics and Warner Brothers, it has to be done by a Warner Brothers company, and then you have to find a Warner Brothers studio within Warner Brothers that will be a good fit for that film, and of course New Line was a really good fit for that film, and it remains to be seen right now what New Line is when the dust is settled and whether there is a New Line or not.”
