Donnie Darko är IMO en "one of a kind" film som jag har svårt att se hur man skulle kunna göra en uppföljare till på ett lyckat sätt.

Digital Spy - Donnie Darko sequel in the works

Friday, May 9 2008

A sequel to Richard Kelly's cult hit Donnie Darko will begin shooting this month, Screen Daily reports.

Titled S. Darko, the film takes place eight years after the events of the first film and follows Samantha Darko (Daviegh Chase), the younger sister of the first movie's lead character, as she travels across America with her best friend Corey. On the road trip the pair start to witness strange visions.

Chris Fisher (Nightstalker) will direct the film. Kelly, who wrote and directed 2001's Donnie Darko, is not involved in the sequel.

"I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality," said Fisher.

Donnie Darko starred Jake Gyllenhaal as a teenager who, after a near death experience, is told by a giant bunny that the world will end in 28 days.

Fisher added: "Donnie's not in [the new film] but there are meteorites and rabbits."

S. Darko begins production on May 18. Fox has already secured North American distribution rights for the film.

IGN - Donnie Darko Sequel in the Works

UK, May 9, 2008 - Cult classic Donnie Darko - the film that catapulted Jake Gyllenhaal to fame, re-ignited interest in Tears for Fears and made sinister bunny suits de rigeur for Halloween – is about to get the sequel treatment.

According to Screen Daily, Chris Fischer (Nightstalker, Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders) will direct the sequel, to be called S. Darko.

Richard Kelly, writer-director of the original, will apparently not be involved, although Fisher said in a statement "I am a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality."

Picking up seven years after the original, the plot will follow Donnie's sister Samantha on a road trip to Los Angeles, during which she is plagued by a series of bizarre visions.

Daviegh Chase will reprise her role as Darko the younger, while Ed Westwick (Son of Rambow), Briana Evigan (Step Up 2) and Justin Chatwin (Dragon Ball) will also star.

So to set the record straight, here's a few facts I'd like to share
with you all - I haven't read this script.
I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever
be involved.

I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I
nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stand to make any money from
this film.

Han pratar även en del om sin nya film The Box i bloggen.

Bloody Disgusting - Quirky Casting Continues in Fox's S. Darko

Friday, May 30, 2008

One of the quirky little things that I love about Richard Kelly's cult classic DONNIE DARKO was the odd casting of stars like Patrick Swayze; it looks as if 20th Century Fox is keeping the spirit of the franchise alive with some weird casting of their own. Inside you'll find out the two latest people to join S. Darko, which is being directed by Chris Fisher.

Elizabeth Berkley and Briana Evigan have boarded "S. Darko" (aka "Samantha D"), the sequel to "Donnie Darko" being directed by Chris Fisher. Ash R. Shah is producing.

Ed Westwick ("Gossip Girl") and Justin Chatwin ("The Chumscrubber") also are in the movie, which stars Daveigh Chase, reprising her role from the original cult classic.

The story, set seven years after the first film, follows Donnie Darko's sister, Samantha, who, in dealing with her broken family, flees town with her best friend (Evigan) when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Production has begun in Utah.

Berkley is playing a speed freak-turned-Jesus freak whose sentiments about ridding the world of its exponential sin are rivaled only by her infatuation with her dreamy pastor.

Evigan, repped by Gersh and Luber Roklin Entertainment, starred in "Step Up 2 the Streets" and appears on NBC's summer series "Fear Itself."

Berkley, of "Showgirls" and "Saved by the Bell" fame, recently wrapped a stint on "CSI: Miami" and completed filming "The Butlers in Love," directed by David Arquette. She is repped by Innovative Artists and Kritzer Levine Wilkins Entertainment.

Bloody Disgusting - Horror Vet Joins Growing Cast of S. Darko

Sunday, June 15, 2008

While we hear the Kelly camp isn't too happy with the idea of a follow-up to his cult classic DONNIE DARKO being filmed, casting is underway for S. Darko, which will follow Donnie's sister Samantha in the new mind-bender from 20th Century Fox. Today it was reported Matthew Davis (Urban Legends: Final Cut, Below, BloodRayne) will join Daviegh Chase, Ed Westwick, Briana Evigan, Justin Chatwin, Elizabeth Berkley and Briana Evigan in the Chris Fisher directed sequel.

The story picks up seven years after the first film (and Donnie's death) when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions .

Shock Till You Drop - Rathbone Defends S. Darko

October 28, 2008

On the set of Dread, ShockTillYouDrop.Com got some chat time with actor Jackson Rathbone to discuss his part in the Clive Barker adaptation and S. Darko, the controversial follow-up to Richard Kelly's film starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

"I play this crazy character and it has to be one of the best character developments I've seen," Rathbone says of the new Darko. "I just jumped at the chance to play it. Chris Fisher is an amazing director. [Makeup artist] Christel Edwards did this amazing prosthetic effect on me, it was so much fun. It was a month in Utah and we just had a blast [shooting] up there."

The story picks up seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko (Daveigh Chase) and her best friend Corey (Briana Evigan) are now 18 and on a road trip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

Since Fox announced the production start of the sequel, there has been a palpable backlash from the fans. But Rathbone believes they should give it a chance. "Look at the original Donnie Darko. When it was first released, did anybody like it? No, it was a year later," he says. "Through people talking, people got it. We're in an opposite boat, because people loved the first one after a while. Maybe they'll warm up to this, too. Or, they'll hate the idea of it, but once they see it, I think they're going to turn around."

"It takes the idea of the film," he adds, "and it goes beyond, answering and delving into more questions than Donnie Darko did. A lot of people are pissed that Richard Kelly is not involved, but he did sell the idea. He did give the license to do it. So it's not like he's opposed to it."

Look for Rathbone in the anticipated tween adaptation Twilight on November 21st. S. Darko arrives in 2009.

Donnie Darko Sequel Goes Direct To DVD
...The good news is that the film will not play theatrically and will instead go direct-to-dvd on April 28th from MGM’s home entertainment.

...That said, these guys make a better attempt than you'd think they would. For the most part it doesn't feel like a cut rate DARKO, the production value is pretty good. The cast is good, the cinematography is good, they capture the gloomy mood pretty good. Lots of slo-mo and musical montages.
...
Still, I would not really recommend this movie, it's an unnecessary rehash. But if you insist on watching it for some reason it's really not that bad. It's definitely not one of the all time classic DTV sequels like UNDISPUTED II or FROM DUSK TILL DAWN 2, but it's way better than an embarrassment like a CANDYMAN 3 and a step above a mediocrity like HOLLOW MAN 2 I'd say.

Maybe it's a masterpiece if you read the prequel comics though.

Ungefär som väntat alltså, kanske något bättre kvalitet än jag trodde.
