Dr. Helen Magnus will be sheltering even more "abnormals" now that the SciFi Channel has picked up "Sanctuary" for a second season of 13 episodes, according to TVGuide.com.
"SciFi Channel will continue to trail blaze the television landscape by further exploring the many worlds of 'Sanctuary' through its unique green-screen environments," according to Mark Stern, Executive Vice President of Original Programming at SciFi. "Technology and great storytelling makes 'Sanctuary' a fantastic addition to SciFi's 2009 lineup."
During "Sanctuary's" October 3 debut, more than three million viewers watched the program, making it the highest-rated original series premiere on the SciFi Channel since "Eureka" debuted in July, 2006. The next three episodes have averaged a 1.53 average household rating, according to Gateworld.net. Six of the first 13 episodes have aired on the SciFi Channel so far.
Starring "Stargate SG-1" alumnus Amanda Tapping, "Sanctuary" originally began as a web video production. "Atlantis" writer Damian Kindler created the series.
The program caught the attention of the SciFi Channel, which picked up the series and scheduled it to follow "Stargate: Atlantis" on Friday evenings.
The show follows Dr. Magnus and her team of experts, including her daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup), forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), tech wizard Henry (Ryan Robbins) and a variety of other allies tthat help protect these endangered creatures while researching the science and mystery that brought them into being.
"Sanctuary" will begin production in Vancouver early next year for a 2009 premiere. New episodes of "Sanctuary" appear each Friday night at 10 p.m.
