'Star Trek: Countdown' Begins in January - ComicMix news
Miniseries is Film Prequel

IDW has released details about the prequel comic book miniseries leading into next May’s Star Trek reboot. Entitled Star Trek: Countdown, it will focus on Nero, the villainous Romulan played by Eric Bana and said to be seen at the film’s beginning set in Trek’s present before the time travel elements kick in and we see the familiar crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise unite for the first time.

The miniseries will be written by Mike Johnson (Superman/Batman) and Tim Jones from a story crafted by Trek director J.J. Abrams and screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Art will come from Italian draftsman David Messina who has previously drawn for IDW’s Trek line.

Countdown launches in January and will run for four monthly issues with the trade collection already announced for April 29, just a week prior to the May 2 release of the feature film.

“[Star Trek: Countdown] is about how you connect the Next Generation era to our continuity, inspired by when we last saw Mr. Spock in ‘Unification’,” Orci told TrekMovie.com.

“I can assure you that we all (IDW and Bad Robot) are at work in order to be faithful to the spirit of Star Trek!” Messina enthusiastically posted at the site. “…and believe me, you can’t imagine how huge and picky is our ‘pre-production’ work for this book! Mike and Tim are great Star Trek fans, while even if I’m not a Trek’s guy, I’m a really great lover of Sci-Fi… I really hope that you’ll like our book, we are at work on it with great passion.”

Låter avgjort intressant. Ska försöka komma ihåg detta och ta mig en närmare titt när det blir dags. Är inte mycket för "movie tie-ins" i vanliga fall men kan tänka mig att göra ett undantag då IDW's Star Trek satsning hittills har hållt hög kvalité.

Hmm, reboot? Dåligt ordval eller ligger det något bakom det?

Självklart ligger det bakom. Informationen om den nya filmen må än så länge vara knapphändig men den räcker för att avgöra att den som inbillar sig att Trek '09 är nåt mindre än en reboot inte har riktig koll. Tror någon fortfarande att de tänker dras med 40 års invecklad och självmotsägande kontinuitet släpandes i hasorna?

Hehe, ja, visst är tanken en slags reboot i meningen att man så att säga ska sluta cirkeln. För att lägga grunden för en ny serie och fler filmer i franchisen. Men att filmen skulle innebära en reboot i vanlig mening, det har då inte jag uppfattat och det har inte sagts uttryckligt i alla fall. Sen är det klart att man kan misstänka att tankarna finns där, det var därför jag reagerade på ordvalet.

Sen är det är ju en prequel, så de behöver ju inte ha med alla 40 år med inkonsekvenser.

Vad jag far efter är att ingen har uttalat att ST:XI är en reboot och är den det bör de vara öppna med det och inte smyga kring det som de förefaller göra just nu, eller tydligt klargöra att det inte är en reboot. Det går liksom inte att både äta kakan och ha den kvar.

Q: What made you touch Star Trek?

JJ: I think it was the opportunity to tell a story that was based on a world and characters that I felt were just compelling and optimistic and the opportunity to treat that universe with a kind of energy and excitement and the resources we had. It didn’t feel like a classic reboot or prequel. It is a brand new thing inspired by characters that are poised to make a big comeback.

IDW Publishing has joined with Paramount Pictures, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, Kurtzman/Orci Productions and CBS Consumer Products to publish a four-issue limited comic book series tied to next summer’s new Star Trek movie, which will be released in theaters on May 8, 2009.


The first comic in the series, Star Trek: Countdown #1, will be released in January 2009 to the comic book direct market. The story is presented by Abrams and plotted by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. It is written by Mike Johnson (Superman/Batman) and Tim Jones, and features stunning art by David Messina (Star Trek: Mirror Images). Messina also provides covers for the series.

“There was a lot of back and forth about doing this project, how to do it, what it would be about, but what all parties agreed on was that we needed the right story and that it needed to matter. It had to count both on its own merits and when read in conjunction with the new movie,” said series editor Andy Schmidt. “I couldn’t be happier with the project and what it means to the overall Star Trek franchise!”

"Star Trek: Countdown lays the groundwork for what happens in the movie," said Roberto Orci. "It's our way of passing the baton from the Next Generation characters and their movies to the new film."
